Safety concernsatKaiapoi High
School’s main entrance on Ohoka
Road are finally beingaddressed.
PrincipalJasonReid says he is
pleased the Waimakariri District
Council is looking at installing a
pedestrian crossing outsidethe
school’s main entrance.
‘‘It is ahigh risk areaand an
accident waiting to happen, but I am
pleased the council has taken on board
our concerns.
‘‘I am lookingforward to seeingthe
end result.’’
The KaiapoiTuahiwi Community
Boardhas givenits support to the
project and has recommended it to the
council’s utilities and roading
committee, which willconsider it at its
meeting on September19.
In areport to last month’s
community boardmeeting,staff
recommended installing azebra
crossingnear the school entrance.
The council had already approved
$30,000 as part its 2022/23 minor
improvements programme budget for
safety improvements at Kaiapoi High
School and afurther $30,000inthe
2023/24 budget.
Atraffic count by council staff on
OhokaRoad outside the school
estimated therewere around 6800
vehicles per day, which was within the
recommended limits for azebra
crossing.
Mr Reidsaid several motorists were
coming overthe Ohoka Road
overbridge too fast. ‘‘Youfeel likeyou
are coming in from arural area
coming overthe overpass, so I’m not
surprised youget some motorists
coming through too fast.’’
