Northern Colts Brisbane bound By JOHN COSGROVE The Northern Colt’s Rugby team is working hard to fundraisefor apreseason trip to Brisbane in 2024. Assisting coach Sam Chisnallsays the newlyformed under 21 country rugby team has planned awide variety of jobs in theirspare time to raise the funds necessary to take asquadof30tothe Gold Coasttoplay anumber of games next year. ‘‘They are bagging 1000bags of recycled pottingmix from Zelandia Horticultural this weekend,willsoon be tailing on many of the properties here in North Canterbury and also cuttinglots of fire wood. ‘‘They are doing it all themselves as they have takenonthe role of organising and financing the tripthemselves.’’ Mr Chisnall says The Northern Colt’s wasformed earlier this year by combining thecolts players from the Hurunui and GlenmarkCheviot RugbyClubs They had avery good first season and impressed theircoacheswithhow well they worked together. Mr Chisnall saysthe preseasontour is incredibly valuable for thecareers of the youngplayers. ‘‘We are trying to showthese youngmen that they don’t have to movetothe city clubs to go on overseastrips. It offersthem another pathwayfor their sporting careers outhere in North Canterbury.’’ He says it helps to make country rugby an attractive option to play,even for those who have alreadymovedinto the cities. Sixtycompetitors will contest the 1.7 kilometrecourse, in asudden death elimination, until onlytwo remain. Returning is title holder Hayden Paddon. Paddon, New Zealand’s most successful rally driver, is the newly crowned European rally champion. He is also the NewZealand champion, and aformerHyundai worksdriver in the worldrally championship. Paddon againcomes to the event, enteringboth his locallybased rally car, alongwith the electric rally car that he has built up in recent years. The eventthat was firststaged in 1979,has regularly attracted the countrys toprated drivers. This number includesformer national champions Paul Adams, winner in 1981, NeilAllport 1983, Tony Teesdale 1987, Rod Millen1988 and 90, Possum Bourne 1989 and 91 and Paddon 2011,19and 22. Forest work hasprevented the event from being held on 10 occasions. It does however remain as the country’s premier eventofits kind. Entries this year also include, Trevor Crowe, now aged77, drivinga Subaru, and winner in 1985. He was the first SouthIslander to win. The 2017 winner andcompetitor at the Pikes Peak hillclimbinthe USA, SloanCox from Rotorua, is also entered,driving his MitsubishiEV10, and Rangiora’s Ari Pettigrew, driving his HoldenBarinaAP4. Pettigrew has challenged the leaders in thisyear’s New Zealand rallychampionship. Hastings Gareth McLachlanwith his aging, but veryquick Mitsubishi Galant VR4 and Neil Webb, two time New Zealand hill climb champion from Blenheim, driving avery modifiedMitsubishi Miragereturn, as does the twowheeldrive titleholder ChrisHey from Mosgiel piloting his purposebuilt Toyota MR2. Canterburyentries include Mike Tall,David Quantock and in the class battles defending01300 champion Rangiora’s ChrisHerdman with his 1300cc Toyota Starlet.
