Respect needed
As we head into the general election
cycle it is noticeable that some
community members are expressing
all mannerofbehaviour.
It really bothers me that people
disfigure the faces of peopleand rip
down hoardings.
Thankfullywelive in ademocracy,
andyour right should be exercised on
October 14, ratherthan wasting
endless time under the cover of
darkness.
An election cycle is atime of
promise and uncertainty, although
currently this is coupledwith
economic instability, highinterest,
low commodity priceswith sky
rocketing costs.
Let’s take some timeand showa
little respect to all thoughts, and
expressionsofhope.
Hurunui District Councilare also
experiencing unprecedented
escalation of costs acrossour
operation.
At our recent Audit and Risk
committee we reviewed our
insurance cover for our $98.9million
portfolio, with $63 million of the
assets having full cover including
Natural Disaster, and the water and
sewer assets.
As acouncilwehave carried out a
full revaluationofthe land and
buildings for financialpurposes in
preparation for the 2023 Annual
report.
Tsunami siren testing
Tsunami sirens at Leithfield Beach and Amberley Beach are to be tested on Sunday,
September 24, to coincide withDaylight Saving.
Hurunui District Council’s Emergency Management officer Allan Grigg says the
siren warnings will sound for one minute, at 1pm for Amberley Beach and 1.30pm
for Leithfield Beach.
‘‘Our beach communities will hear the siren followed by avoice message that will
directpeople on what action they needtotake,’’ he says.
‘‘As this is just atest of the sirens, the recorded message will clearly state it’s a
test, and that people do not need to be alarmed.’’
Civil Defence volunteers would be on hand in clearly marked vests in both beach
communities to provide information and reassurance, Griggsaid.
‘‘In areal event, where there is sufficient time, emergency mobile alerts will also
be utilised to warn our communities.
Above all, remember LongorStrong, Get Gone: if you are near ashore and
experience astrong earthquake that lasts more than one minute, take action and
evacuate immediately.’’
