Sensing smells, touch
By JOHN COSGROVE
Being able to touch, smell and taste
flowers and herbs in their new sensory
garden opens up anew world of
experiences for the residents of Bainlea
House in Rangiora.
Rangiora Lifecare Ltd Managing
Director Paul Renwick says the opening
of the new sensory garden installed in
the company’s Bainlea House facility,
serves to inspire residents to come
outside.
‘‘It encourages them to become
focused on the colours, the smells, the
tastes and feel of over 60 different
plants, herbs, and vegetables.’’
Residents can sit on the sides of the
purposebuilt sensory garden to feel the
texture of the plant leaves, smell the
mint, lavender, oregano or aloe vera and
daffodils, and taste the mustard plants
or the strawberries or tomatoes while
looking at all the colours in the new
garden.
‘‘It’s anice way to help them stay
active and aware of what’s going on in
their world,’’ he says.
In planning for alittle over six months,
Mr Renwick says the idea for the sensory
garden came from staff talking about the
successes residents were having
managing their small gardens in the
other two Rangiora properties operated
by the company.
‘‘It’s an important part of the journey
of all our residents and we were happy to
see it come to fruition at the start of
spring.’’
Praise was also given to staff member
Kevin Hoskins who built and installed
the Ushaped garden.
