No word on cause of toxic spill
By SHELLEY TOPP AND
ROBYN BRISTOW
Whitebaiters are upset it’staking so long to
clean up NorthCanterbury’s Saltwater
Creek.
Kelly Sintes, along time whitebaiter
says fishers are ‘‘really upset’’ overthe
delay in getting toxicology reports and
declaring the creek safe following aspill
into the waterway from the Daiken
fibreboardfactory at SeftononFriday,
September 1.
The spill which happened on the first
day of the whitebaiting season, rendered
many favouritefishingspots out of bounds,
and killed fish.
Mr Sintes saysthe situation is creating
‘‘bad blood’’between whitebaiters,
Environment Canterbury(ECan) and
people at the factory.
ECan put up signs warning people not to
gather mahinga kai, fishand keep animals
away from SaltwaterCreek, the wider
Saltwater Creekestuary and the northern
parts of the wider Ashley/Rakahuri
estuary.
‘‘Surely Daikenhas the history on
record of what the discharge is,’’ Mr Sintes
says.
‘‘Therefore there would be no need to
wait for toxicology reports, and for ECan to
be dragging its knuckles,’’ says Mr Sintes.
Meanwhile whitebaiters are watching
time tick away on an already shortened
season under new regulations.
Mr Sintes saysthis is forcing some to
turn to other rivers to fish for the delicacy,
upsetting longestablishedfisherswho had
been fishing those waters for years.
The North Canterbury News haslearnt
some whitebaiters and fishersare ignoring
the warning signsalong the waterway as
the waterinthe creekhas cleared.
Mr Sintes saysthere was nownosign of
the spill.
‘‘Whitebaiters arefrustrated and some
Warning sign ... Asign put up by Environment Canterbury on September 1.
are fishing anyway. Fish are coming up the
river and arenot dying,’’ he says.
ECanrangers says whilethe situation
may be frustrating for peoplewho want to
fishfor whitebait in the creek and estuary
‘‘itisvery importantthat you do not
consumefish, whitebait or shellfishfrom
the area’’.
Theyasked people to obey thesigns,and
share the message with anyone elsewho
may be intending to fish there.
‘‘Weare still waiting for key test results
fromour water sampling.
‘‘The laboratoryweare workingwith has
indicatedthesemay not be ready until
nextweek at the earliest. We appreciate
thismay be frustrating, but public health
remains the priority.’’
ECan’s Waimakariri zonedelivery lead,
Nerida Theinhardt, says thatalthough
parts of the waterway may no longershow
visible signsofthe spill, theystillneed key
resultsfromtheirwater sampling before
they can give the allclear.
‘‘Until then, it is important that people
and animals avoidcontact withthe water
in Saltwater Creek and the wider
Saltwater Creek estuary and Ashley/
Rakahuri estuary.’’
Daiken NZ meanwhile, has declined to
comment on whatcaused the toxic
wastewater and effluent spill fromits
mediumdensity fibreboard (MDF)
production factory, or whatthe substance
was.
The companyreported the spill to ECan
on September1,and says it is continuing
to cooperate fully withthe regional
council.
Daiken saysitisnot in aposition to
comment further while investigations are
underway. The company’s operations
director, DuncanWard,says Daiken has
ensuredits wastewater and discharge
system is working properly, and withinits
consent requirements.
