That was the evening The Birds by Alfred Hitchcock became forever imprinted on my psyche! I don’t recall the exact date or day, but it must have been a Saturday evening since an aunt and uncle came to visit. And, as was the habit with visiting friends or relatives, the ladies usually stayed in the kitchen, chatting and laughing, while the men could be found in the living room. In this case, watching television. I know at least my sister and I were still up, and in the living room with my dad and uncle, when The Birds started playing on the tube. I would estimate we were in the early grades of elementary school. I can only imagine how glued our eyes must have been to the TV as the plot and horrors unfolded before us. My dad and uncle must have been equally paralyzed by the scenes of carnage that played out, particularly as they didn’t seem to realize that this movie was not suitable viewing for children! Not until my mother came into the room to take us off for a bath before bed, was the hypnotic spell of horror broken. As we climbed the stairs to the second floor, my sister and I probably resembled zombies more than children! My mom obviously saw the effect the movie had had on us as we quietly took our bath. She returned again and again to recount more facts to support her story that it was fake and just a movie. My uncle pitched in by providing her with details on how this and that scene would have been pulled off, much like a magician would provide the secrets to his illusions of magic. To this day, I recall two scenes. One was the man found in the bathtub. The second entailed the main male character trying to stop the birds from entering the house through windows while other birds tried to peck through a door. The three female characters tried to take refuge in a corner, or was it a closet? Years later the birds made a return, this time to the bedroom of my sister and me. Behind the wall in a corner of our bedroom lay the chimney. A decorative plate sealed a hole in the wall that used to house a heating pipe in years gone past. As the heating system was renovated, a gold metal plate was placed over the opening. My sister and I started to hear scraping and scratching behind this plate. Eventually my dad investigated. The birds were not attacking, only a poor, solitary bird who had fallen down the chimney and was desperately trying to escape. Unfortunately, the poor creature did not survive. A bird even found its way into my own house years later. I returned home from an afternoon shift at work to find my brave German Shepherd hiding in the basement. The job to search the house to see what had driven her there, fell to me. As I wandered hesitantly through the rooms, I started to notice signs that some creature had been about. Finally in the living room, at the back of the house, I discovered a black bird. She had found her way behind a blind on one of the windows and pecked her way through the clear plastic insulation covering in an attempt to escape. I got a towel and easily scooped her up. She calmly sat within the towel in my hands looking about inquisitively as I opened the outside door and released her to freedom. The movie didn’t seem to stop me from developing a love for birds and a gratefulness for them. I don’t even mind hearing the robin sing outside my window at about five in the morning!
