Je ne sais quoi
by
I don’t know how much our readers
pick up on this, but there are themes
that sometimes develop in an issue of
Daytripping, even if they’re unintended.
In the first couple of years, we would
intentionally have some issues focused
on everything from railway stations to
tearooms but, quite frankly, that was
before we had kids. We had time to do a
lot of other things back then as well. In
this issue, if you consume it all at once (as
I know many of you do) you might find a
focus on: peace; the importance of time
and what it means in our lives; and public
art, particularly murals in the many towns
we cover.
None of this is ever planned nowadays—
we simply go where the talent of our many
contributors takes us. So if you do find that
this issue has a certain “je ne sais quoi” to
it, or something resembling a personality,
it’s not our fault, nor is it to our credit.
We do always choose a theme for our
bottom borders, and the ones you’re
finding this issue focus on peace and
harmony. That did set the tone for some
of the articles and the filler material that
we selected to break up the space between
ads. And there’s no secret that the ads are
the reason we do this. We want you to
visit all these unique small businesses and
events that make our area special and are
very fortunate that people actually read
Daytripping for the ads. Our customers
love it, we have jobs, and you get a free
magazine—it’s a win-win-win! That said,
the contributions from our readers have
made this much more than just a job, and
we wouldn’t still be here without them.
This big, little paper has made a lot of
friends over the years.
The focus on public art came up quite
by accident. We received a story about
murals that are being brought to life (in a
sense) in the town of Clinton. You can read
it on page 30. Numerous murals in Clinton,
including a portion of one that’s on our
front cover, were painted by an old friend
of Daytripping named Allen Hilgendorf.
Allen passed away 10 years ago at far
too young an age, but I’m amazed at the
prolific legacy he left and wonder how
aware of it he was. You’ve likely seen his
murals if you’ve been to Exeter, Port Elgin,
Kincardine, Seaforth, Clinton, Markdale,
Tell Us About Your
in Southwestern Ontario
Mark Moran, Publisher
Walkerton, and Palmerston among others,
and also on the cover of Daytripping many
times. He completed over 100 very large
murals, and they are an attraction in every
town that they call home. You can see
many of his creations at www.hilgendorf.
ca and go on a daytrip of your own making
to discover them. I never met Allen,
though we spoke numerous times. His
time ended well before it should have, and
I can’t imagine how much more he could
have done.
If you look to page 40 you’ll see a couple
examples of murals by Blaze Wiredharma
and the photos don’t do them justice at
all. This is a young guy from Toronto who
has an incredible talent for “blazing” town
names on murals while incorporating their
individual idiosyncrasies and historical
significancies (is that actually a word?).
Personally, I’d love to see his work in every
town of any size in Southwestern Ontario,
and think it would be an awesome tourism
product. Imagine if towns throughout our
entire region had murals of this calibre
proudly and boldly telling you where you
are and what they’re about with massive
murals that have a common thread—the
artist’s style. Visitors would consume
them and experience the similarity,
even if they didn’t notice that they were
taking it in. Among his numerous other
accomplishments in life, this is what Allen
Hilgendorf had created for us to enjoy. I
don’t know how old Blaze is but judging
by the photo on his website he’s young
enough to have decades of great work
ahead of him, and I hope he never stops.
Check it out at www.blazeworksart.com
These wonderful murals would never
be appreciated if it weren’t for you (nor
would this magazine) so thank you and
please go experience and appreciate the
talent that’s on public display throughout
our big, shared backyard. And none of
us are here forever folks, so please share
your own talents with your communities. If
you happen to be a writer please consider
sending us an article. We can never have
enough friends!
Thanks for reading!
P.S. My article in our last issue was
about the many nicknames of people I
grew up with. How in the world did I forget
to mention Biddo and Peeler?
