Murals Come to Life in Clinton!
Anyone walking the streets of Clinton
can see that the charming town is home
to many beautiful murals. However,
the true magic comes when you hold
your phone camera up in front of the
artworks. With the help of up-andcoming
augmented reality technology,
the murals will come to life and move
on your screen.
You’ll see horse-drawn carts drive
across the frame, cornstalks sway in
the breeze, birds soar, and much more!
Each mural will have a unique animation
sequence designed by a professional
artist, as well as an immersive audio
component.
Clinton’s animated murals were
inspired by The Junction BIA’s annual
“Window Wonderland” project in
Toronto. Each year, their downtown
creates an animated mural walk based
on window murals found throughout
their business district. Clinton is excited
to bring big city technology to a small
town setting where their art, history,
and culture are all just as worthy of the
spotlight.
It’s the perfect tour for any season,
since the murals can be viewed from
your vehicle in case of poor weather
and for ease of accessibility. Art and

visitors interested in augmented reality
will get to experience exciting new
technology.
Six of Clinton’s murals were painted
by the late Allen Hilgendorf, a muralist
responsible for over a hundred artworks
in small towns throughout Southwestern
Ontario. His talent for elevating daily
activities through art resulted in a series
of murals throughout Clinton depicting
the area’s historically significant
moments. (A portion of one of Allen’s
murals is featured on the front cover of
this issue). Animating these pieces of
history breathes new life and interest
into existing art. This creates a creative
and unique experience for residents
and visitors alike, while still preserving
Allen’s legacy.
Furthermore, the mural walk
integrates well with several other
projects in the area. Last summer, Clinton
launched a downtown historic walking
tour, which includes fifteen stops. Each
stop shares fascinating information and
stories from local history, alongside
many old photographs. The tour can be
viewed online by visiting tinyurl.com/

Many of Hilgendorf’s murals illustrate
local history and overlap with points
of interest on the walking tour. Stop
number 7 on the walking tour describes
an entertaining story of crowds gathering
on the streets to watch TV through the
windows of the first TV store in town.
This scene is depicted on a digitally reillustrated
Hilgendorf mural which will
be located on the side of Bartliffs Bakery
and Restaurant. Bartliffs itself is another
stop on Clinton’s walking tour, since it
has been a fixture in town for over 100
years.
Clinton’s newest mural, found at the
main intersection of town, highlights
the beauty of the area. It includes many
local icons, such as Ball’s Bridge and
Clinton’s historic town hall. The mural
is part of an interactive mural tour
that stretches across Huron County.
This digital mural trail highlights
new artworks in the neighbouring
communities of Bayfield, Exeter,
Goderich, Seaforth, and Wingham.
