Ladies Who Lunch
A fellow I know mused aloud about
whether there actually are “ladies who
lunch.”
Yes, I confirmed, indeed there are. In
fact, I’ve been part of one such group
and have some wonderful pre-pandemic
memories of exploring a different local
restaurant every month. I’ve been
thinking that it may be time to resurrect
the group, because I think we all miss it!
Now, women are often sociable
creatures, so I imagine there might be
quite a few groups who gather to gab and
grab some grub. They might even refer
to themselves as “ladies who lunch.” But
we were a little unique. Some members
referred to our group as the “chicks
who chomp,” which might give you a
different visual if you’re trying to picture
what we might look like.
You couldn’t miss us really. We
were often quite noisy. And silly. One
December we almost had the group
convinced to flash mob and sing
Christmas carols after our lunch at
Covent Garden Market. Almost, but not
quite. Which is truly a shame because
one of the ladies was quite a good singer
and I’m sure she could have carried the
rest of us, even those who
insisted they were
tone deaf.
LOCAL
Another month we visited a local
Ethiopian restaurant where we devoured
a huge communal platter of food. The
meal was delectable, but as always
was made all the better by the spicy
conversation and generous dollops of
laughter.
Being part of the group was a terrific
way to get out and experience the local
restaurant scene. Not everyone turned
up every month, but we did each get our
turn to choose a dining spot. We usually
picked places that are homegrown and
can only be found here in the London
region. Ethnic restaurants seemed to be
a popular choice.
A few vegetarian selections on the
menu were a must. Other than that,
frankly, we’d go anywhere if the food
was good, the price was right, and
there was enough room for six or eight
or ten women of a certain age to make
themselves at home for a couple of hours.
“Don’t worry,” we’d tell the wait staff.
“We’ll be gone long before the evening
crowd arrives.” After all, we were the
ladies who lunch… not the babes who
brunch or the dames who dine.
