Sock It To Me

Winter drags on and I’ve lost the urge
to write. What an awful time to lose
momentum, when idle hours could fill
sheets of paper with words of wisdom
or imaginary balderdash.
Each morning I arise peeking out
into a world of white, gray clouds and
pending weather warnings. We shovel,
gazing skyward, wondering when the
snow will stop and if it doesn’t where
will we continue to pile the stuff.
My 84 year old neighbour, Marls, lives
alone yearning for the return of spring
and warm temps, as we all do, to enable
her great pleasure of outside visits.
Each day she puts in the hours
rattling off the list of jobs
she has done around her
home. She says with her
usual good humour that
there is always a drawer,
closet or stored boxes to be
gone through and cleaned out.
Yesterday she climbed up on her
kitchen step ladder and cleaned the
microwave fan and high cupboards
that house infrequently used things.
Needless to say I admire Marls, she is
a trouper.
It is not often I hear negativity from
her. If and when I do, I relate my
story of living in a cardboard box and
roasting squirrel over an open fire. It is
an abundantly silly story but it makes
her chuckle and be thankful for a warm
house with running water and food in
the larder.
So that I may attempt in some small
measure, to keep up to the standards of
my resilient neighbour, today I attacked
my winter sock drawer. Over the past
few months I’ve noticed that each
time I opened the drawer a sarcastic
remark erupts from among the rolled,
folded and ‘looking for it’s mate’ multicoloured
mix. Phrases such as ‘you
again,’ ‘we are feeling messy,’ ‘how busy
are you anyway?” I slide the drawer
closed, saying, “Tomorrow.” A muffled
snarl comes from within, “Sure—it’s
always tomorrow!”
Sometimes that sock drawer can
get down right nasty accusing me of
favouritism, choosing to clean my closet
several weeks ago instead of it and the
junk drawer resting above it’s interior. It
just loves to jab me that I put it in order
just before Christmas.
Do I have to say I’m feeling a lot
guilty in the neglect of my sock drawer?
So tomorrow has come... Today is
the day. I walked determinedly down
the hall, entered the bedroom and drew
open the drawer. I actually heard a small
gasp! It was surprised into stunned
silence.
In a very few moments
the drawer was emptied
and sorted. The old liner
ripped out, the interior
wiped down and a new liner
installed. I addressed the
contents with a hangman’s
attitude and discarded unused,
orphaned or injured subjects.
Blacks, grays, striped, spotted and a few
flowered are now neatly piled within. It
is with abundant relief that I no longer
suffer the grief of a neglected sock
drawer.
However the kitchen turntables
have taken on an attitude, albeit not as
aggressive as my winter sock drawer,
but their murmured complaints are
beginning to plague my waking hours.
For some time now I’ve been
meaning to clean the kitchen cupboards
and put down attractive liner. I bought
several rolls of liner on the weekend. My
intentions are very good. But like I said
earlier, my momentum is lacking and
obviously not just in writing.
I guess there will always be a drawer
or closet that needs attention, the trick
is not to listen to closely.
Pretty soon it will be spring and I’ll
be in the garden where I won’t be able
to hear the complaints erupting from
the depths of cupboards, drawers and
closets. Those jobs will once again go
on the list for winter jobs. The circle
continues.
