Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: The Blue Pig Tavern at Congress Hall in the heart of Cape 

May’s Historic District. We grabbed a table on their outdoor patio under 

the sun on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon. It wasn’t too busy, and we 

were seated right away, unsurprising considering the time of year and 

a miweek day out. 

The conversation: Jack, Courtney, Kayla and Nicole enjoyed a lunch 

meeting to chat about some exciting marketing plans in the works, one 

of which is our very large and very fabulous Exit Zero anniversary book 

coming next summer. This book will be a pictorial history of Cape May 

and so much of the best Exit Zero magazine has published over the last 

21 years. Inside you’ll see photos from the openings of some of Cape 

May finest restaurants, weddings, high school reunions, and plenty of 

beach photos from over the years. You also have an opportunity to have 

your personal message included in this incredible book. Memorialize 

your favorite Cape May memory — a funny moment from a vacation, a 

tradition you had with your grandparents as a child, or why you retired 

here. We want you to remember WHY you love Cape May. This book is 

going to be HUGE, check out more at exitzero.store. 

The food: Wouldn’t be a lunch meeting without some delicious 

food. Jack and Nicole started with their soup of the day — a sweet 

potato bisque before digging into fish and chips and a chicken Caesar 

salad, respectively. Courtney and Kayla both enjoyed a grilled chicken 

wrap with feta, olive tapenade and hummus. Kayla also indulged with 

some fries while Courtney stuck to a side salad. We boxed up a few 

things before heading back to the office — it was both a tasty and productive 

afternoon. 

The takeaway: The Blue Pig is open daily for breakfast beginning at 

7:30am, lunch from 11am to 3pm, and dinner from 5 to 10pm. It’s a great 

spot to enjoy a quick bite with the family — they do have a kids’ menu 

— or to do some business. We’ve had our fair share of work meetings at 

the Blue Pig and it surely will not be our last.

Bird Droppings 

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

Last March, I began writing the saga of 

this year’s Osprey nesting season. It 

ended yesterday. Way back on Saint 

Patrick’s Day, the two adult Osprey 

returned to the alpha nest across from 

the riverside park, by March 31, there were 

five Osprey pairs within sight of the park and 

14 adult birds by April 14. With so many prospecting 

birds and limited nest space, things 

were bound to get complicated. Sure enough 

on April 8, two pairs were vying for the nest. 

The interlopers built a new nest on the 

park side of the river in a utility pole in town 

until a heavy rain caused a transformer to 

blow. The power company arrived to restore 

power and relocated the nest to a newly 

constructed platform in the park. The birds 

adopted the relocated nest but seemed unable 

to move forward. Meanwhile the alpha pair 

moved on with the breeding season. 

On September 17, there was one adult still 

in the nest, but the others departed. Tireless 

fliers, the birds follow a trans-Atlantic, Great 

Circle Route to South America. Northern 

birds have thus far dominated the hawk flight 

at Cape May Point State Park and birds from 

Labrador and Newfoundland will continue 

to be counted through October. Even under 

cloudy skies and a steady drizzle, four Osprey 

have already been tabulated. Most hawks 

would never consider migrating in weather 

like this, but these strong fliers are waterproof, 

with outer feathers coated in waxy oil. 

Able to dive to depths of 20 feet, the “fish 

hawk” is strong enough to launch itself from 

the water and climb vertically with a fish in 

tow. In summer with young in the nest, the 

birds must perform this feat multiple times 

a day. Sea eagles also eat fish but skim them 

from the surface or pilfer them from Ospreys. 

And while Osprey vacate the northeast in 

Winter, Bald Eagles are resident, counting 

down the days, as I am, until the Osprey 

returns in the spring. Make no mistake, there 

is an abundance of birds wintering in South 

Jersey and the winter pattern is already established. 

Fish Crows gathering to roost every 

evening, Black Ducks heading out to spend 

the night on Delaware Bay. Mockingbirds 

defending winter territories and dark-eyed 

Juncos any day now. But somehow the skies 

over town seem empty without the ringing 

whistle of Osprey. 

One season ends, another begins. And 

winter means owls. Screech Owls live across 

the street and Great-horned Owls call from 

the church steeple into January. I’ll be writing 

about these in the weeks ahead.

The Movie Column

There are tons of movies that get 

thumbs (way) down from critics but 

audiences love! Do you have a favorite? 

There’s one I’ll review here — but 

let’s check out the phenomenon as 

seen through the lens of Rotten Tomatoes! 

Romantic musicals your thing? Mama Mia 

(2008) got a 55% splat rating from critics on 

Rotten Tomatoes and a 66% fresh rating from 

audiences. The sequel 10 years later did better 

by critics while audiences stayed the same. 

How about superhero flicks? Did you like 

Venom (2018; 30% critic score, 80% audience 

score) or Black Adam (2022; 39% critics, 88% 

audience). The audiences who watched would 

likely agree, but the critics not so much. Some 

other movies where critics cringed and fans 

binged are National Treasure (2004; 46% critic, 

76% audience — sequel did about the same 

but lower), The Gray Man (2022; 45% v 90%), 

and Slumberland (2022; 40% v 86%). 

This week’s movie isn’t new, but you got 

to run to catch it — it moves fast. Bullet Train 

(2022; 54% v 76%) is a ridiculously cartoonish 

movie, but it grabs you at the station and 

rushes you through the action. It has its share 

of celebrities and lesser-known actors, and 

the characters have code names. Brad Pitt 

plays Ladybug, an enlightened assassin who 

needs to pick up an “important briefcase” 

(that’s the ceremonial MacGuffin). 

Ladybug is joined by a parade of assassins 

as the briefcase is tossed around in frenzied 

action. Critics say that action was sometimes 

too whacked to follow, and they may be right. 

But it’s fun to follow anyway. 

The film grossed nearly $300 million, 

so unsurprisingly Sony is considering 

a sequel. The movie has garnered multiple 

award nominations — one being a People’s 

Choice Award. MTV also gave a Breakthrough 

Performance Award nomination to mega 

popstar Bad Bunny for his portrayal of The 

Wolf. Okay, maybe bringing up these awards 

is me rationalizing why I loved this flick so 

much. What can I say? When a zany action 

comedy doesn’t go “off the rails,” we need to 

give some credit. 

Update: Anthony M read And Just Like That, 

the Sex in the City series reviewed here. He says 

the Samantha character (Kim Cattrall) was 

sorely missed on the new show. “Who else 

would set the other characters straight when 

they messed up,” he said. Noted!

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, enjoy a show at Cape May Stage! 

There’s an old saying — garbage doesn’t 

lie. You can tell yourself you’ve cut down 

on your consumption of Hershey’s 

Kisses, but that growing pile of silver 

wrappers in the trash tells the truth. The 

same is true for your good habits, like overestimating 

how much healthy food we consume. 

We could count the apple cores or banana peels 

in the garbage if we really wanted to. A peek 

into our recycling bin tells a similar tale — the 

gossip magazines reveal why we didn’t finish 

our assigned summer reading. Archaeologists 

know this, which is why they study the remnants 

of ancient civilizations to figure out how our 

predecessors lived. Garbage haulers also know 

this, and that is the basis of the comedy currently 

playing at Cape May Stage. 

Billed as a “hopeful story about finding 

common ground in uncommon times,” “The 

Garbologists” is an unlikely buddy comedy. It 

follows sanitation workers Marlowe and Danny 

through Marlowe’s first days on the job. The 

two are very different, but perhaps not in the 

ways that really matter. Danny, the voice of 

experience, has contempt for people who fail to 

recognize that life is like cheese — you need a 

little stink to make it work. Most people never 

think about sanitation, he notes. “They think 

the Garbage Fairies take it away in the middle 

of the night. Poof! Street’s clean.” Marlowe, a 

college-educated woman new to this union job, 

is initially dismissive of her co-worker, though 

she appreciates the tips about “reading the 

bags” to avoid “splishing,” bed bugs and excess 

weight. Marlowe and Danny hunt for “mongo” 

as they go — the treasure that may be found in 

trash. Among their discoveries are connections 

between people, and the realization that it’s not 

just their work that makes people essential. 

“The Garbologists,” written by Lindsay 

Joelle, directed by Roy Steinberg, and starring 

Michael Basile and Serena Ebony Miller, 

runs through October 22, Wednesday through 

Saturday at 7pm and Sunday at 3pm. Visit capemaystage.org

recommended for ages 16 and over and runs for 

90 minutes. Tickets are available online or at the 

box office for around $47. 

Next up for Cape May Stage will be “A Tuna 

Christmas” by Jaston Williams, Joe Sears, and

December 30th. Theater lovers can also consider 

the East Lynne Theater Company, where “Love 

Letters” plays through October 14, “Tales of 

Horror Suspense” plays October 27 and 28, and 

the radio-style play “The Death of Holmes?”

want any more. I knew she was home. I knew 

she saw us, and it made me uncomfortable. 

I know he has a good relationship with her. 

After a few drinks, I’m afraid I said something. 

Then my host/neighbor said something, and it 

got ugly and I left. I’m not sure if I was right or 

not but felt I had to stand up for her. She did not 

mention the gathering when I saw her walking 

her dog. Naturally, I said nothing, but what do 

I know about my host? Do I ignore the whole

I am invited to a Halloween party at a 

coworker’s house whom I like very much. 

Halloween is apparently her favorite holiday. 

The problem is I hate dressing up. Normally, I 

would decline the invitation, but I don’t want 

to offend my very kind co-worker. I had a 

hard transition into this job, filling the role of 

someone very loved who fell ill. My co-worker 

paved the way. Do I just show up as I am? What 

if I offset my not joining in with a really good

ZELDA is a young girl who came to the shelter 

when her family could no longer care for her. 

She has a lot of energy and loves to run in the 

yard. Zelda is treat motivated which helps with 

training. Her leash skills need some work, but 

she is progressing. Zelda would thrive in a 

home with experience training a young German 

Shepard. 

HARRY is a delightful four-year-old boy 

who loves everyone he meets. He came to 

the shelter when his family could no longer 

care for him. He lived in an active home with 

several children but is uncomfortable with 

loud noises. Harry has excellent manners and 

seems to be fine walking by other dogs and is 

not one to escape through an open door.

SHIRLEY TEMPLE AND MIMOSA came 

from a hoarder house and are believed to be 

mother and daughter. They love each other 

and it would be best if adopted together. Shirley 

sometimes shivers in fear but loves to be 

pet. These girls need a safe and loving home 

when they’ll be well taken care of. Other cats 

in the home are perfectly fine. 

BODEGA was brought to the shelter after she 

was picked up in front of Shoprite. Turns out 

she had five kittens behind the store and was 

looking for food for quite some time. They all 

came to the shelter and the kittens have all 

been adopted. Bodega is a two-year-old girl 

ready for a loving home — she would do well 

with dogs and children. 

CITRINE AND TOPAZ were rescued from a 

trailer park as kittens. The pair came in with 

severe upper respiratory and eye infections. 

After much love and care, they’ve become the 

most grateful, sweet and happy cats ever. The 

scarring on their eyes does not bother them 

and they’d do well in a home with other cats, 

dogs and children.
