KEEPING
YOU SAFE.
Health and safety
It’s important you feel safe
throughout your apprenticeship
programme. If at any time you have
concerns regarding health and
safety, you should raise these with
your employer in the first instance.
If for any reason your
concerns aren’t resolved, talk
to your trainer/assessor.
The primary piece of legislation that
ensures your safety whilst at work
is called The Health and Safety at
Work Act which places duties on
both the employer and employee
which by law you both must do.
What you must do:
●
●
●
●
●
●
●
Take reasonable care of your
own health and safety and
that of other people who may
be affected by your actions
Co-operate with the
employer and comply with
the employer’s legal duties
Use equipment or substances
in accordance with any
training or instruction
given by the employer
Report any serious or imminent
danger to the employer
Report any accidents
to the employer
Keep any information about the
employer’s business confidential
In case of absence or sickness,
immediately notify the
employer and place of study.
What your employer
must do:
An employer must ensure that
young people employed within
their business are adequately
protected against the risk
presented by their activity. Special
consideration must be given to
their lack of experience, immaturity
or absence of awareness of
existing or potential risk.
There are lots of things an employer
must do to ensure your safety
at work. Some of these are;
● Assess the risks to all
employees and identify what
control measures need to
be introduced to remove
the hazard or reduce the
risk from it. This is commonly
known as a risk assessment.
●
●
●
●
●
Communicate any
significant risk to you
Have copies of a risk
assessment if the company
employs 5 or more people.
Provide a safe working
environment
Provide instruction,
information and training
Provide free PPE required
so that you can carry
out your job safely.
