comes the seaside!<br />

Once again, O-<strong>Ringen</strong> is over – another one is coming. We are leaving the mountains (and<br />

a bit of rain and hail) behind us and our sights are set on the coastline ahead of us. At the<br />

core of O-<strong>Ringen</strong> is the concept that the experiences of orienteering and fellowship are<br />

central to each edition, while the setting and framework change around them.<br />

We know that this year, many<br />

of you had further to travel<br />

to our arenas, which meant<br />

that some people spent<br />

altogether too much time waiting in Åre.<br />

To everyone who took part in O-<strong>Ringen</strong><br />

Åre 2023, we promise we have read, sorted,<br />

processed and taken on board both the<br />

criticism and the praise that we received<br />

in connection with our competitor survey.<br />

Without your feedback each year, O-<strong>Ringen</strong><br />

– together with its competitors – would<br />

never be able to be the world’s greatest<br />

orienteering adventure!<br />

O-<strong>Ringen</strong> 2023 in Åre was a real<br />

challenge. Changing basic conditions have<br />

been and still are a challenge for ourselves<br />

as an organisation, as well as our concept<br />

and our delivery model. Now we are<br />

drawing a line under 2023 and looking to<br />

the years ahead. With a self-critical eye<br />

and high quality engagement with you,<br />

our loyal competitors, we have been able<br />

to update our mission plan, collecting and<br />

documenting many important points and<br />

new experiences. The knowledge we’ve<br />

gained will be crucial to how we continue to<br />

organise successful and enjoyable events in<br />

Swedish orienteering.<br />

Now the orienteering adventure is<br />

heading south – to the coast of Småland!<br />

Our helpers and destination are ready to<br />

welcome you. You can expect an O-<strong>Ringen</strong><br />

City, with the campsite and O-<strong>Ringen</strong><br />

Square, that’s just a short cycle from the<br />

centre of Oskarshamn. We have two stages<br />

right next to O-<strong>Ringen</strong> City and yet another<br />

arena within cycling distance. We are also<br />

providing five days of competition for all<br />

orienteering disciplines. So, orienteering for<br />

everyone and plenty of time for shared club<br />

dinners, eating cake, bathing and spending<br />

time with family and friends!<br />

beautiful part of the world in summer<br />

and experienced an O-<strong>Ringen</strong> in<br />

true mountain surroundings. We are<br />

very grateful that you joined us and<br />

I hope you had a great experience in<br />

terrain and nature that might have<br />

been new to you. The charming thing<br />

about O-<strong>Ringen</strong> is that each year is<br />

unique. We also hope that you will<br />

return to Jämtland and Åre in the<br />

future. On behalf of all our officials<br />

and helpers, Niclas Lidström, Project<br />

Manager for O-<strong>Ringen</strong> 2023 in Åre,<br />

for medical healthcare and collaboration!<br />

During O-<strong>Ringen</strong> in Åre, our arenas in Trillevallen, Järpen<br />

and Ånn all included a temporary mobile medical station<br />

operated by Region Jämtland Härjedalen’s team. The<br />

region’s aim was to ease pressure on other local<br />

healthcare services, including local health centres,<br />

Östersund Hospital and the ambulance service.<br />

The medical station at the arena was there to provide full treatment<br />

for anybody who needed it, while at the same time giving as high<br />

quality healthcare as is possible in temporary facilities. A total of<br />

13 people worked in the station’s team. As well as a receptionist<br />

there were a doctors, a physiotherapist, nurses, a radiographer and<br />

assistant nurse/orthopaedic technologist. All visits were recorded<br />

and documented by the team treating the patient. As well as this<br />

team there was also a logistics manager, a project manager and two<br />

more people to help transport and build the medical station.<br />

The team on the ground<br />

The team were divided into five treatment areas: an emergency<br />

area (doctor/nurse), physiotherapy area (physiotherapist),<br />

orthopaedics area (orthopaedist/nurse), eye injuries, etc. (regional<br />

doctor/nurse), X-ray (radiographer), and of course a reception led<br />

a receptionist and triage (emergency nurse). The doctor and nurse<br />

in the emergency area also had to either run out to casualties or be<br />

transported there on O-<strong>Ringen</strong>’s quad, depending on the situation.<br />

The station had equipment including and eye microscope and<br />

portable X-ray unit, as well as materials to stitch and dress wounds,<br />

bandages and other treatments for injuries commonly suffered<br />

during O-<strong>Ringen</strong>. You could clearly see that the injuries presented<br />

varied not only according to the terrain, but also the weather. The<br />

forest terrain led to more eye injuries and mountain terrain and<br />

wet weather more cuts and strains.<br />

Many people treated at the competition<br />

In total, 213 people received medical care during the competitions<br />

at Trillevallen, Järpen and Ånn. 210 of these were treated<br />

on location and three were transported elsewhere; all three had<br />

heart complaints and were taken to Östersund Hospital. Of the 213<br />

visits; 156 saw a doctor, 18 a physiotherapist and 39 a nurse. The<br />

average age of patients visiting the station was 41. The youngest<br />

patient was 6 years old and the oldest was 88.<br />

25 X-rays and 9 fractures<br />

The mobile X-ray unit performed 25 X-rays, detecting 9 fractures that<br />

were treated on location. Patients who needed X-rays avoided having<br />

to go to hospital in Östersund or a health centre in Åre. The images<br />

were transferred digitally to the hospital and read by their team, with<br />

the answer being sent directly back to the emergency area.<br />

How did it go?<br />

On the basis of the above, we can summarise the collaboration<br />

between O-<strong>Ringen</strong> and the regional health service by saying<br />

say that it worked just as well as we had hoped. O-<strong>Ringen</strong> took<br />

place without any serious incidents or injuries. The aim of easing<br />

pressure on other health services was met successfully, in that<br />

treatment on location healthcare and ambulance services in the<br />

area were not affected. The mobile X-Ray unit meant that these<br />

25 patients avoided having to be taken to Östersund Hospital or a<br />

health centre in Åre for care, easing pressure on both transport and<br />

their X-Ray services.<br />

Finally, you could say that providing healthcare on location, under<br />

the direction of Region Jämtland Härjedalen, has worked very<br />

well during O-<strong>Ringen</strong> Åre. It meant not only a good service but<br />

much better accessibility. Normal healthcare services were not put<br />

under pressure and were hardly affected at all. The response from<br />

competitors has also been very positive, in that they were provided<br />

with high quality, safe and quick care on location.<br />

Changes for age groups<br />

75 years and above<br />

A number of you have requested that we change how<br />

we organise competition classes for runners aged 75<br />

years and older. We are therefore very happy to be able to<br />

present these new changes.<br />

• No more classes D75 Short, H75 Short, D80 Short and<br />

H80 Short<br />

• Classes DH75-95 will have a free minute start<br />

• Classes DH75-95 will use the start previously used<br />

by DH80, giving a shorter distance to the start for<br />

classes DH75 and for runners who previously ran the<br />

short class.<br />

Runners just turning 75 may find they have slightly longer courses<br />

than in the 70 Short class but, on the other hand, there will be a<br />

shorter distance to the start. We feel that this is more important<br />

than a couple of hundred metres out on the course. The start for<br />

the short classes (DH17–20 Short to DH70 Short) often needs to<br />

be located further away from the arena to allow for the best courses<br />

for everyone starting from that start. Just as before, the last control<br />

will count as your finish time for classes DH80+ on stages 1 to 4.<br />

We hope that these changes for our older runners will make it<br />

possible for more people to continue enjoying O-<strong>Ringen</strong>, even<br />

when you legs aren’t quite as quick as they used to be.<br />

Many competitors have requested not to have two different<br />

classes for the relatively small number of runners in the DH75 and<br />

-80 age groups. We hope that having just one class will mean a<br />

better sense of camaraderie, as everyone in each age group runs in<br />

the same class.<br />

Getting to Oskarshamn<br />

When you make your way to the Småland coast and<br />

Oskarshamn, you’re about the same distance from each<br />

of Malmö, Gothenburg and Stockholm.<br />

It’s easy to get to Oskarshamn by car or by using one of the<br />

daily bus services from many places in Sweden. A number of<br />

bus companies offer services; Flixbus has a direct connection<br />

to 15 other towns and Vy Bus4You to 9 towns, and then there’s<br />

Silverlinjen, which runs between Öland/Kalmar and Stockholm.<br />

This year we will also be able to offer transport with our O-<strong>Ringen</strong><br />

buses from several places in Sweden (details and booking will be<br />

available later).<br />

If you would like to fly, the nearest airport is Kalmar Öland<br />

Airport, which is served by several routes and carriers. You might<br />

want to combine your visit to the Småland coast with a trip to<br />

Gotland by catching the ferry between Gotland and Oskarshamn.<br />

There are also several options for travelling by train. If you’re<br />

arriving by train to Kalmar, Berga or Västervik you can take a<br />

bus connection to your final destination. Read more about taking<br />

public transport at kalmarlanstrafik.se or download the “Kalmar<br />

länstrafik” app to see which connections suit you best.<br />

Getting to our main arenas<br />

Stage buses will travel to the first two stages in Rosenfors from<br />

both O-<strong>Ringen</strong> City and the satellite parking, and to Stage 3 from<br />

the satellite parking. From O-<strong>Ringen</strong> City to Stage 3 you can cycle<br />

or walk approximately 4 km. We will also provide additional town<br />

buses. For stages 4 and 5, the arena is right next to O-<strong>Ringen</strong> City.<br />

Depending on where on the campsite you are, it is 2.5–3.7 km in<br />

to the centre of Oskarshamn. In other words, the perfect cycling<br />

distance. The campsite has up to 2,500 camping pitches and is right<br />

next to O-<strong>Ringen</strong> Square, where as usual there is a lot going on in<br />

the evenings; prize givings, entertainment and the possibility to<br />

meet our partners. As usual, Radio O-<strong>Ringen</strong> will also broadcast<br />

from the square.<br />

The campsite has the following pitches both with and<br />

In a central location, around 1 km walking distance from<br />

O-<strong>Ringen</strong> Square. Quiet, pleasant surroundings with a lot of green<br />

space and a barbecue area. Oskarshamn Folk High School has a<br />

number of single rooms with showers and toilets in the corridor.<br />

The price of a single room includes breakfast and towels. There<br />

is a TV in the room, as well as a common room and kitchenette.<br />

You can also stay in a classroom and use your own sleeping mat<br />

and bedding. This also includes breakfast. There are toilets in the<br />

accommodation and nearby.<br />

Arrival 19th, 20th or 21st July and departure 27th or 28th July. A<br />

Rödsle School<br />

At Rödsle School, next to the campsite, we have accommodation<br />

in classrooms. Bring your own sleeping mats and bedding. Toilets<br />

are in corridors and showers/changing rooms in the sports hall<br />

nearby. Meals are not included. Hard floor accommodation can be<br />

booked between 18th-28th July 2024, a minimum of 7 nights and a<br />

maximum of 10.<br />

If you would prefer a different type of accommodation, there<br />

are a huge variety of private residences to rent; both houses and<br />

apartments. The Småland coast also has hotels, hostels, cabins,<br />

campervan parking and more, all of which will be available via our<br />

booking portal at oringen.se.<br />

Community, club feeling<br />

and varied challenges<br />

– that’s what O-<strong>Ringen</strong> is really about<br />

I have seen many things in the world of sport, but getting<br />

to stand on top of the podium after a stage of O-<strong>Ringen</strong><br />

beats most of them. The fact that this was in the<br />

H21C class and was 42 years ago really doesn’t matter.<br />

Orienteering is sport at its very best.<br />

Every time I’m out in the forest walking Xavi, our wire-haired Jack<br />

Russell terrier, the memories come flooding back. I look over at the<br />

crag on the far side of the marsh, imagining a red and white control<br />

kite at its foot, or on the north side of the marsh. Sometimes<br />

I take a few quick steps in from the road or ski track, pretending I<br />

have a map and compass in my hand, and that I’m heading straight<br />

for a control only I can see.<br />

For me, orienteering competitions were never that simple. I<br />

often wandered round searching for the right control, turned the<br />

map the wrong way, ran too quickly or too slowly and made such<br />

huge mistakes that I’d promise myself that never again would I<br />

venture out into an unfamiliar wilderness. Only to then find myself<br />

at next Tuesday’s club training race, paying the token start fee,<br />

drawing the course onto the map and throwing myself back into<br />

the forest.<br />

I did every sport you could think of, growing up in northern<br />

Småland in the 1970s and 80s. Football, athletics, skiing, bandy,<br />

table tennis, volleyball, shooting – and orienteering. There was<br />

something special about orienteering. The feeling of fellowship in<br />

that big orienteering family was unbeatable. I loved being close to<br />

nature, the freedom, the suspense ahead of the competition itself<br />

and then chatting about our races and route choices afterwards.<br />

I still have a big box of old maps at my parents’ home in Södra<br />

Vi, about 10km north of Vimmerby. My routes are drawn onto<br />

them in blue pen. There aren’t many lines going straight to the controls.<br />

They were mostly wiggling and circling at the side of them.<br />

The best thing was O-<strong>Ringen</strong> each summer<br />

The best thing about orienteering was O-<strong>Ringen</strong> each summer, or<br />

as we called it, the Five Days. The first time my cousin Ove and I<br />

went – we were pretty much joined at the hip in those days – was<br />

when the competition was held in Skåne in 1974. Two years previously,<br />

the forests of Småland had been invaded by runners, not<br />

far from Vimmerby – I remember that one stage was held near the<br />

farm where the Emil of Lönneberga films were shot. That competition<br />

left a big impression on me and the Five Days was something I<br />

wanted to be part of.<br />

Skåne 1974 where Brösarp’s hills made for a tough stage,<br />

Stockholm 1975 with Västerhaninge as a competition centre,<br />

Västergötland 1978, when Ove and I were just as interested in the<br />

girls from OK Hammaren in Sandviken as the orienteering itself<br />

(when we arrived home we were quickly convinced to ride our<br />

mopeds from Vimmerby to Sandviken and back just to see them<br />

again) and then Hälsingland 1981.<br />

My greatest sporting memory<br />

It was there, at Stage 3, where I achieved the greatest victory of<br />

my life. I ran in class H21C, so the class below Elite, A and B, but<br />

competition was still tough. I remember, there were over 300 of us<br />

runners competing for victories and podium places, and I had an<br />

almost perfect race on Stage 3.<br />

Winning a stage meant that my friends in Vimmerby OK made<br />

a victory wreath that the hung round my neck at our camp, where<br />

the VOK flag was flying high and the mood was wonderful, with<br />

plenty of jokes, unity and camaraderie across all age and gender<br />

boundaries. At the official prize giving I got to stand on the top of<br />

the podium. I remember that I won a rain jacket and a wooden<br />

Hälsinge key. I felt proud, happy and grateful. Later that evening,<br />

all of us in Vimmerby OK got together to eat at our camp. I’ve forgotten<br />

the stories but I’m sure that Lasse, Mats, Ove, Jerry, Roger,<br />

Agneta, Bengt, Mats-Lennart and the rest of us discussed route<br />

choices, maps, terrain and life in general before eventually ending<br />

up on the dance floor.<br />

A newspaper clipping from Vimmerby Tidning, which my<br />

mother Kerstin has saved, describes how I hadn’t manage to get<br />

in touch to report on my own stage win that day. I’d just started<br />

a part-time job as a sports reporter at Vimmerby Tidning and<br />

probably thought it was a bit embarrassing to phone in and tell<br />

them about my win. This was in the time before mobile phones<br />

and the internet, when journalists used old-fashioned landlines.<br />

I can imagine that finding a telephone on a campsite in Hälsingland<br />

probably wasn’t all that easy, either. But the article about my<br />

victory headlined the sports pages in Vimmerby Tidning. Neither<br />

before or since has it been the case that my achievements were seen<br />

to be the biggest event of the day.<br />

I went out in third place in the chasing start on the final stage, a<br />

position I held to the finish. Finishing third at O-<strong>Ringen</strong>, no matter<br />

which class it was in, is one of my best sporting memories. This when<br />

I’ve worked as a journalist for Svenska Dagbladet at nine Olympic<br />

Games, lots of World Championships including football, athletics, skiing,<br />

handball and other big adventures, like the Dakar Rally in Africa,<br />

the Australian Open in tennis and the Masters in golf.<br />

Among honours and international medals<br />

I’ve even reported on the World Orienteering Championships,<br />

when they took place in the forests outside Västerås in 2004 and<br />

Karolina A Höjsgaard won gold in the long distance. The orienteer<br />

who I’ve written most about, however, is Tove Alexandersson, who<br />

in 2019 also won the Svenska Dagbladet Gold Medal as only the<br />

second orienteer ever after Annichen Kringstad in 1981.<br />

For the last ten years I’ve been part of the jury deciding on a<br />

recipient of the annual Gold Medal. In my role as secretary – and<br />

as a sports columnist for Svenska Dagbladet – I’m the one who<br />

nominates candidates, is involved with most aspects of awarding<br />

the medal and I even get to vote for the eventual winner. It is a<br />

privilege to be part of the Swedish sports prize that’s most steeped<br />

in tradition and, as a former orienteer, of course I have highlighted<br />

Tove Alexandersson’s successes over the years. Annichen Kringstad<br />

has also been part of the jury for as long as I have.<br />

Comeback at Smålandskusten 2024<br />

It feels very exciting and appropriate for O-<strong>Ringen</strong> to be coming<br />

to Småland in 2024. I’m sure that every competitor will be looked<br />

after very well and the courses will be both challenging and enjoyable.<br />

The terrain will be varied, from detailed coastal terrain to<br />

heavier-going Småland forest. It will be challenging, both physically<br />

and technically.<br />

I haven’t competed at a single orienteering event since O-<strong>Ringen</strong><br />

1983, when Anderstorp in Småland was the competition centre<br />

for almost 25,000 competitors. Annichen Kringstad – who else! –<br />

and Håkan Eriksson won the elite classes that year, while I mostly<br />

drifted around with little idea what I was doing. I can’t remember<br />

where I ended up on the results, but that isn’t really what O-<strong>Ringen</strong><br />

is about. It’s the camaraderie, club atmosphere, varied challenges,<br />

post-race discussions each evening and the Spartan camping and<br />

campervan lifestyle that really make the Five Days what it is.<br />

When I think back on all the joy that orienteering, and above<br />

all O-<strong>Ringen</strong>, has given me, perhaps it would be fitting to make a<br />

comeback with a map and compass at Smålandskusten 2024. Will<br />

there be a C class in H65?<br />

STAGES 1 & 2<br />

ROSENFORS<br />

O-<strong>Ringen</strong> 2024 opens with a long<br />

distance competition on Stage 1<br />

and middle distance on Stage 2 in<br />

Rosenfors. Rosenfors is located inland,<br />

to the west of O-<strong>Ringen</strong> City. Arriving<br />

on the stage bus, you get dropped off<br />

at Rosenfors IK’s home ground, just a<br />

few hundred metres from Rosenfors<br />

Arena. It will be a classic O-<strong>Ringen</strong><br />

arena in a large meadow, where careful<br />

orienteering is needed all the way to<br />

the last control.<br />

By the fertile valley where the rivers Emån<br />

and Stångån almost meet, Småland’s hills<br />

rise up to the north west.<br />

Stages 1 and 2 are on the east of the valley,<br />

with some larger hills, and mostly good<br />

runnability and visibility. The terrain is characterised<br />

by areas of detail, with many rock<br />

features. There are not many paths or tracks<br />

in the terrain, which has at times made<br />

setting the easiest courses more difficult. We<br />

have created some new paths to be able to<br />

make these courses as good as possible.<br />

Stage 1, Long distance<br />

Stage 1 starts to the south east of the arena<br />

for the shorter and easier courses, in a<br />

vaguer part of the map. There are paths and<br />

tracks to begin with and then some felled<br />

areas, fields and meadows towards the end,<br />

before the final meadow and the finish.<br />

Longer and more technical courses start<br />

straight into a pathless, detailed area with<br />

many boulders and crags. The fast, open terrain<br />

with good visibility is in places swapped<br />

for felled sections and denser areas, with<br />

reduced visibility and runnability. Between<br />

the hills and up on their tops, clear areas of<br />

marsh can be useful for navigation. Most<br />

courses finish in a very detailed area with<br />

boulders, crags and smaller hills, then it’s<br />

just a case of running through the meadow<br />

to the finish.<br />

Stage 2, Middle distance<br />

The route to the start on Stage 2 passes<br />

northwards through Rosenfors village.<br />

Shorter and easier courses will use an area<br />

with few paths and many details close to the<br />

paths. All courses finish through the same<br />

area. Longer and more technical courses<br />

start up on the big hill which dominates<br />

the competition area, where the terrain is<br />

runnable, with good visibility. Like on Stage<br />

1 there is a lot of detail but towards the end<br />

of the courses there is even more, and both<br />

runnability and visibility are more limited in<br />

places. Remember to stay focused as you run<br />

down the hill on the approach to the finish.<br />

there is a lot of detail.<br />

• The courses have a good difficulty<br />

level. It’s good that they don’t just<br />

rely on direction changes all the<br />

time, like some planners do. This<br />

terrain is demanding enough as<br />

it is.<br />

Now it’s time to move to the sea and<br />

Gunnarsö Arena for a long distance<br />

race. If you are staying at the O-<strong>Ringen</strong><br />

campsite or in Oskarshamn, we recommend<br />

cycling to the arena – it’s less<br />

than 5 km. If you don’t have a bike with<br />

you and the walk is a bit too far, there<br />

will be buses from Döderhultsdalen.<br />

Now we’re by the sea on the Småland coast<br />

and the typical coastal terrain is much less<br />

hilly than Stages 1 and 2.<br />

The terrain is characterised by large areas<br />

of pine forest with open rock, detailed hills<br />

and marshes of all sizes, which form natural<br />

boundaries between the open rock areas and<br />

small hills. Shorter and easier courses stay in<br />

the area closest to the arena, in terrain with<br />

a lot of paths winding their way between the<br />

marshes, small hills and up over the bare<br />

rock, where they can sometimes be a little<br />

unclear. Make sure you look up to see where<br />

the path continues on the other side. Longer<br />

and more technical courses have a bit more<br />

climb and the terrain has fewer paths, with<br />

lots of detail to make the orienteering more<br />

difficult, especially near the old sea inlet in<br />

and around the nature reserve Sjöboviken,<br />

which is crossed using bridges. The courses<br />

finish though the area close to the arena<br />

with many paths. If you look up when you<br />

finish, you will see the blue water of Östersjön.<br />

If it’s a nice day, taking a dip in the sea<br />

might be the perfect way to finish your race!<br />

The final two stages of O-<strong>Ringen</strong> will<br />

be based at Döderhultsdalen Arena,<br />

right next to O-<strong>Ringen</strong> City. It will be<br />

within walking and cycling distance<br />

of the centre of Oskarshamn. The<br />

stages finish by passing through the<br />

Fagereke nature reserve, finishing at<br />

the arena under Hjortberget.<br />

Stage 4, Middle distance<br />

On the way to the start on Stage 4, competitors<br />

can also see the blue water of Östersjön.<br />

The starts are close to the northern part of<br />

Oskarshamn. There are lots of paths in the<br />

whole of the competition area, between the<br />

low hills that have plenty of detail.<br />

The terrain also features some areas of<br />

denser forest, which limit running speed and<br />

mean you have to navigate more carefully. At<br />

the start of the stage, some competitors may<br />

pass an adventure playground and frisbee golf<br />

course and may need to cross some ropes, etc.<br />

that are not marked on the map. Competitors<br />

will be challenged by some shorter and<br />

steeper hills and changing terrain close to<br />

the edge of town. Shorter and easier courses<br />

start in small forested areas on the edge of<br />

town, then cross under the E22 and finish<br />

by passing through Fagereke nature reserve.<br />

The path network, with a variety of large and<br />

small paths, means the terrain is constantly<br />

changing all the way to the finish under<br />

Hjortberget. Longer and more technical<br />

courses start in a trickier, more detailed area<br />

then pass some fields and meadows on the<br />

way to the crossing under the E22, then pass<br />

through Fagereke nature reserve on the way<br />

to the finish.<br />

courses for Stage 4 on 6 th Sept 2023:<br />

• Fun.<br />

• Difficult.<br />

• Changing terrain, good variety.<br />

Stage 5, Long distance<br />

The final stage takes place in forest to the<br />

west of Stage 4 but finishes in the same place<br />

at Döderhultsdalen Arena. This last stage<br />

has mostly good runnability, however there<br />

are some denser areas and areas with undergrowth,<br />

with some felled area to cross or go<br />

round. The terrain consists of gently sloping<br />

forest and has fewer details than Stages 3<br />

and 4. Shorter and easier courses pass riding<br />

clubs and horse paddocks before coming<br />

from the west into the same finishing area as<br />

on Stage 4. When it’s time to decide the winners,<br />

choose the right paths and avoid extra<br />

climb at the end to be first to the finish.<br />

Longer and more technical courses start<br />

northwards in varied terrain, with open forest<br />

mixed with denser areas and felled areas,<br />

where you’ll need to navigate well and find<br />

the best lines for running. The final, decisive<br />

part of each course will go through the same<br />

area as Stage 4, with pastures and broadleaf<br />

forest with many large, old deciduous trees.<br />

Keep orienteering all the way into the finish if<br />

you want to be crowned a winner at O-<strong>Ringen</strong><br />

The competitions use slightly different areas but both will be in<br />

central parts of Oskarshamn, in front of cheering spectators. The<br />

competition terrain itself is a combination of urban and park areas.<br />

The park features parkland, forest and some buildings (a school) and<br />

in town, small yards and narrow passages, streets and alleyways – all<br />

to give a real sprint orienteering challenge.<br />

The Gotland ferry approaches Oskarshamn. I disembark<br />

and look to the horizon. I’ve just arrived here on the<br />

mainland to start my first job. Little did I know that, 30<br />

years later, I would be looking at the same horizon as I<br />

draw the map for the O-<strong>Ringen</strong> Elite Sprint.<br />

Just like back then, the Gotland ferry nears the inner harbour,<br />

turning its usual pirouette before docking at the quay. The passengers<br />

step back onto dry land. They rush by as I stand scratching my<br />

head, looking at the cartographic dilemma posed by Långa Soffan,<br />

said to be the world’s longest bench. It must be in the Guinness<br />

Book of Records. From here, as well as the Gotland ferry, you<br />

can also spot Blå Jungfrun (“The Blue Maiden”) in the distance.<br />

Steeped in legend, the island also a national park.<br />

Now I’m nearing the middle of town. I walk the same cobbles<br />

as Axel Robert Pettersson, “Döderhultaren,” walked a century ago.<br />

You’ll definitely learn about him when you come to Oskarshamn<br />

next summer. There’s a bit of a hill to climb, so I have tired legs by<br />

the time I reach the town square.<br />

Competitors will surely run through the town centre. Where<br />

else will they go? Apart from the town centre itself, Oskarshamn is<br />

proud to have a relatively large park. As well as typical park terrain<br />

it also has some forest, where you get the feeling of being right out<br />

in the woods, far away from the bustle of the town centre.<br />

Streets, cycleways and walkways. Tarmac, cobbles, grass and<br />

gravel. Forest, parkland and lots of urban areas. Yes, it’s anyone’s<br />

guess how the course setter chooses to use these possibilities.<br />

I hope and believe that all our competitors will appreciate the<br />

variety that Oskarshamn has to offer, and wish you all a warm<br />

welcome to the Smålandskusten in 2024.<br />

O-<strong>Ringen</strong> Smålandskusten 2024 offers five MTBO stages,<br />

each with its own character. As a MTBO competitor<br />

you will cycle on everything from small, very technically<br />

demanding paths to fast, wide gravel roads, with some<br />

tarmac sections. Not only that, three of the stages<br />

are held next to O-<strong>Ringen</strong> Square and the campsite at<br />

Döderhultsdalen.<br />

Stages 1 and 2, Arena Långehäll<br />

Långehäll outdoor leisure area, just outside Blomstermåla, will<br />

host the first two stages. The area is in a wonderful forest setting<br />

and has a rich path and road network, which really lends itself to<br />

MTBO. The area has up to 20 kilometres of bike tracks, which are<br />

maintained by Ålems Cykelklubb.<br />

Stage 1 is a middle distance, where MTBO riders will be<br />

challenged in terms of both intensive navigation and cycling ability<br />

in Långehäll’s dense path network, which also has some hilly areas.<br />

Stage 2 is a long distance, where MTBO riders will face a<br />

relatively flatter area with faster paths and tracks, offering lots of<br />

route choice.<br />

STAGE 1 & 2 STAGE 3 STAGE 4 & 5<br />

Stage 3, Havslätt Arena Hjortberget<br />

Stage 3 at Hjortberget Arena is a lengthened sprint, in suburban<br />

terrain near the O-<strong>Ringen</strong> campsite at Döderhultsdalen. The<br />

terrain features both fast roads and paths near a residential area,<br />

as well as cycling in a recreational area with a dense path network,<br />

with some paths being more technically demanding. The finish is<br />

at Hjortberget, next to Döderhultsdalen.<br />

Stages 4–5, Scaniaslingan Arena<br />

Stage 4 is a middle distance and will take place in Kronoparken,<br />

an area near to town and next to the O-<strong>Ringen</strong> campsite. The area<br />

has some small hills and a good network of cycling and mountain<br />

bike tracks created by the local cycling club. The area is perfect for<br />

middle distance.<br />

Stage 5 is a long distance and will also take place near the<br />

O-<strong>Ringen</strong> campsite. The competition area overlaps with the area<br />

used for Stage 4, which is combined with fast gravel roads and a<br />

variety of paths of all sizes and technical difficulty. The area offers<br />

varied terrain, with both fast cycling and tricky sections.<br />

The start and finish are at the arena but, after finishing and<br />

showering, we recommend taking your bike down to the MTBO<br />

meting place at Döderhultsdalen Arena to meet fellow competitors,<br />

friends and family and discuss the day’s competition with them.<br />

The Trail-O at O-<strong>Ringen</strong> Smålandskusten 2024 will be held<br />

over five stages, at five different arenas. The three stages<br />

near Oskarshamn are within cycling distance and there are<br />

buses to Stage 1. For Stage 4 at Berga you will need to<br />

take your own car. All the arenas have car parking nearby. .<br />

Stage 1 will be held at Rosenfors Arena, where you can use the<br />

stage bus for the orienteering, after which Trail-O competitors will<br />

be transported with minibuses to the competition area, which is<br />

next to Målilla Orienteringsklubb’s club hut. Once you have competed,<br />

take the minibus back to the Arena to download and to join<br />

other Trail-O and orienteering competitors.<br />

Stage 2 will be held at Havslätt Arena in Oskarshamn, within cycling<br />

distance of O-<strong>Ringen</strong> City in Döderhultsdalen, in a wonderful<br />

This stage will also host “Come and try Trail-O” on the ctivity day on<br />

24th July.<br />

Stage 3 will be held at Stadsparken in Oskarshamn and for the first<br />

time at O-<strong>Ringen</strong>, this will be a TEMPO stage for the classes Pre-<br />

Elit and Pre-A. For Pre-B and Pre-C there will be normal Trail-O.<br />

This will be park terrain mixed with forest. This stage is also within<br />

cycling distance.<br />

Stage 4 will be at Berga sports ground, which has a football pitch<br />

and exercise tracks. This will be a competition area with good visibility<br />

and lovely paths and tracks. Competitors must take their own car<br />

to this stage, as it is around 30 km to Berga from O-<strong>Ringen</strong> City.<br />

Stage 5 will be held at Kristineberg in Oskarshamn, again within<br />

cycling distance of the campsite. A pleasant arena next to the hilly<br />

terrain and its great exercise tracks.<br />

In the summer of 2021, the Swiss<br />

orienteering family the Grendelmeiers<br />

left their homeland and moved to<br />

Oskarshamn, on the coast of Småland.<br />

The family is made up of Ineke and<br />

Peter, who are both doctors in their<br />

50s, and their daughters Sanna, 14, and<br />

Marit, 13. The move meant that the SOK<br />

Viljan girls’ team got a real boost, as<br />

both Sanna and Marit are talented young<br />

runners who have been successful both<br />

in Switzerland and Sweden,<br />

While Ineke and Peter naturally became<br />

an important part of the club’s leadership.<br />

Now they will be officials at O-<strong>Ringen</strong><br />

Smålandskusten 2024, where Ineke and<br />

Peter will be helping with Competitor<br />

Services and maybe also with first aid in the<br />

forest (they’re professionals!). We put some<br />

questions to the family.<br />

When and why did you<br />

move to Oskarshamn?<br />

Ineke: We started our move here in summer<br />

2021 and by the time school started in August<br />

that year, the whole family were here.<br />

Peter: I have had a connection to Sweden<br />

for the last 30 years, ever since I orienteered<br />

here. As well as that, Ineke’s family also had<br />

a holiday cottage near Åseda, so we have<br />

spent our Christmas and summer holidays<br />

here. Six or seven years ago, on a summer<br />

holiday, we travelled to Gotland and saw on<br />

an advertisement that the island was looking<br />

for doctors. That was when we first had the<br />

idea of moving to Sweden. We were finding<br />

that the work culture in Switzerland wasn’t<br />

something we wanted to be caught up in<br />

for the next 20 years. We also liked Sweden<br />

and our holidays here. So we contacted the<br />

doctors’ organisation in Småland and Oskarshamn<br />

ended up being the most suitable<br />

place to live and work.<br />

When did you start orienteering?<br />

Peter: I started orienteering when I was ten<br />

but then had a long break until around five<br />

or six years ago.<br />

Ineke: The family has orienteered together<br />

for around five or six years.<br />

Is orienteering in Sweden<br />

similar or different to Switzerland?<br />

Peter/Ineke: Of course, many things are the<br />

same: the race procedure, the controls and<br />

the maps. Many of the forests in Switzerland<br />

have lots of big tracks and greener areas.<br />

There are also many steep areas. The forests<br />

in Småland are usually much less hilly but<br />

more detailed. In Sweden a lot of activities for<br />

juniors are organised at club level, whereas<br />

this is usually done regionally in Switzerland.<br />

Sanna: I’ve saved all my prizes. One of them<br />

is a piece of wood. It feels like orienteering<br />

is more popular in Sweden, where the other<br />

kids at school have at least some idea of<br />

what it is.<br />

What are your best<br />

orienteering memories?<br />

Everyone: O-<strong>Ringen</strong> in Kolmården, 2019.<br />

Sanna: And one sprint race in a park in<br />

Switzerland, which was really nice.<br />

Do you have any orienteering heroes?<br />

Sanna: Simona Aebersold<br />

What are your favourite<br />

places in Oskarshamn?<br />

How have you found the social aspects<br />

of moving to a new country?<br />

Ineke/Peter: The club are like a family and<br />

often meet up outside of orienteering. We<br />

work mostly in Kalmar and we have some<br />

friends there, through work. Some of them<br />

are orienteers, too.<br />

Marit and Sanna: The club has a good group<br />

of W14s who train together and even do<br />

extra training. We also have a lot of friends<br />

at school.<br />

People from Switzerland often pick up<br />

Swedish very quickly. What’s your secret?<br />

Ineke: Lots of Swiss runners go to orienteering<br />

schools in Sweden and compete for<br />

Nordic clubs.<br />

Sanna: To start with I just tried to listen and<br />

learn bit by bit until I could use the words<br />

myself. It also helped that we already spoke<br />

German and a lot of words are similar to<br />

Swedish.<br />

Peter: But the prepositions are still a<br />

problem after two years!<br />

Direction 2030<br />

– everyone has a right to take part<br />

Direction 2030 is the strategy of<br />

Swedish orienteering and describes<br />

our vision: Swedish orienteering – for<br />

everyone, throughout their life. The<br />

strategy covers both our general aims<br />

and areas for action, with our basic<br />

principles and core values as a guide.<br />

Direction 2030 aims to inspire and<br />

encourage us to dare to change and<br />

develop towards 2030.<br />

One of our basic principles is that “everyone<br />

has a right to take part”. This means,<br />

everyone who wants to join in and orienteer<br />

can do so, whatever their circumstances.<br />

Orienteering welcomes everyone, regardless<br />

of their background or ambition. We work<br />

for equality and inclusion and place a high<br />

value on working together. The idea that<br />

orienteering is a lifelong sport for all life’s<br />

stages can be seen in practical terms by our<br />

range of age classes and open classes. Orienteering<br />

should bring inspiration and joy<br />

to everyone, throughout their life. Here are<br />

four examples of how we are working actively<br />

with our vision “for everyone, throughout<br />

their life” and our principle “everyone has a<br />

right to take part”.<br />

Exemptions for large scale maps for people<br />

with eye injuries and visual impairments<br />

Do you have a documented eye<br />

injury or visual impairment that is<br />

not age related? If so, you can apply<br />

for an exemption from the Swedish<br />

Orienteering Federation for larger<br />

scale maps.<br />

A successful exemption allows competition<br />

organisers to work round competition rules<br />

when it comes to map scale. Organisers,<br />

however, are not obliged to contribute extra<br />

time and work to allow larger map scales<br />

for participants. Contacting the organiser<br />

in good time before a competition means<br />

there is a greater chance they will be able<br />

to order an adapted map. The larger the<br />

competition, the more notice is required,<br />

as arranging and ordering maps is a longer<br />

process. Remember to attach proof of your<br />

exemption when contacting the organiser.<br />

Orienteering map norms are<br />

the result of many years of<br />

development, and they have<br />

considered some forms of<br />

colour blindness.<br />

For instance, the red colour that<br />

many people have difficulty<br />

seeing is not used and symbols<br />

in different colours have different<br />

shapes so they don’t get mixed<br />

up. There has not, however, been<br />

any scientific analysis of how<br />

maps are read when colours are<br />

seen differently.<br />

Therefore, with economic<br />

support from Skogssportens<br />

Gynnare and Kartringen, the<br />

Swedish Orienteering Federation<br />

is starting a project whose results<br />

will also be shared with the International<br />

Orienteering Federation.<br />

The aim is to develop a norm for<br />

orienteering maps which works<br />

for as many people as possible,<br />

regardless of your colour vision.<br />

New project assessing<br />

orienteering maps and<br />

colour blindness<br />

Janne completed 3 stages with only 2% vision<br />

Jan “Janne” Thorin, 43, from Karlstad<br />

has found a new sport: orienteering.<br />

After having an eye problem when<br />

he was 14, Janne now has only 2%<br />

vision. “It’s like swimming in murky<br />

water,” he says.<br />

So how do you orienteer?<br />

– No problem, if like Janne you like a<br />

challenge, but one or two adaptations are<br />

needed.<br />

Using enlarged maps at scale 1:1,800,<br />

Janne took part in the final three stages<br />

of O-<strong>Ringen</strong> in Åre, accompanied by a<br />

guide. The guide’s job was to make it easier<br />

for Janne to get about on rough paths and<br />

through the forest.<br />

In Åre Janne did the Easy 3.5 km course<br />

on two stages and the Easy 5.0 km course on<br />

one stage. The courses were divided over 8–9<br />

A4 and A3 maps, one for each leg. His guide<br />

helped him change maps at each control.<br />

Proud and happy<br />

Janne was happy and proud after completing<br />

the three stages.<br />

– I never thought I would experience the<br />

feeling of freedom you get from being able<br />

to orienteer through the terrain. And then<br />

O-<strong>Ringen</strong> and the Swedish Orienteering<br />

Federation’s work with Direction 2030<br />

has resulted in a clear vision that<br />

everyone with a visual impairment,<br />

or intellectual or physical disability,<br />

should be able to compete in the world’s<br />

biggest orienteering competition.<br />

In an evaluation of this year’s Para-I class,<br />

competitors have shared many positive experiences<br />

from Åre. The experience has left<br />

the strongest impression, being one of the<br />

15,000 orienteers who took on the challenge<br />

through hailstorms and wet marshes, and<br />

sharing the memories with clubmates.<br />

When we ask Eva Dahlberg about her<br />

most vivid memory from the summer’s<br />

O-<strong>Ringen</strong>, say replies somewhat<br />

despondently, but with a glint in her eye:<br />

“The medals… Henrik had the medals out<br />

on the kitchen table at home for over a<br />

month and nobody was allowed to touch<br />

them.” Eva is talking about Henrik Berglund,<br />

with so many competitors, buses to the<br />

arenas and walking to the arenas together<br />

with thousands of other orienteers was really<br />

special, says Janne.<br />

More orienteering<br />

He’s still orienteering and, following<br />

O-<strong>Ringen</strong>, Janne has been orienteering in<br />

Para athletes welcome at O-<strong>Ringen</strong> Smålandskusten<br />

her partner and fellow competitor in the<br />

Para-I class, who won every stage. We hardly<br />

need to ask what Henrik remembers.<br />

– The prize givings, interviews and<br />

meeting other prize winners. And having to<br />

write autographs, says a smiling Henrik.<br />

It’s clear that he’s proud to compete in the<br />

Para-I class and has already started planning<br />

his travel and accommodation for O-<strong>Ringen</strong><br />

Smålandskusten. By then, Eva and Henrik<br />

are hoping that the Para-I class will have<br />

more competitors.<br />

Värmland in OK Tyr’s club colours. Now he<br />

is looking for sponsors to help him continue<br />

orienteering.<br />

– I’m entitled to a guide to can help me train<br />

and compete within the Karlstad area, but not<br />

to anything further away. Orienteering means<br />

a lot to me. It has really motivated me to train<br />

and to live a healthy life, both physically and<br />

mentally, finishes Janne.<br />

– We saw that there were some other para<br />

athletes at O-<strong>Ringen</strong> who chose to compete<br />

in other classes. They are welcome in the<br />

Ahead of this year’s O-<strong>Ringen</strong>, the<br />

Para-I class is part of the plan from the<br />

very beginning and all para athletes who<br />

are curious about an adapted orienteering<br />

adventure can read about the open Para-I<br />

class on the website. The courses have a<br />

“Very easy” difficulty level and the map is a<br />

simplified 1:5,000 orienteering map.<br />

Organising O-<strong>Ringen</strong> requires a whole range of skills.<br />

One area with which O-<strong>Ringen</strong> has chosen to have some<br />

external help since 2018 is the wifi. Ever since the<br />

O-<strong>Ringen</strong> Höga Kusten 2018, Bluecom have provided wifi<br />

for competitors and central network infrastructure both<br />

at O-<strong>Ringen</strong> City and at each arena.<br />

O-<strong>Ringen</strong> City and the arenas are all large areas and coverage for<br />

the whole of these areas is not possible. So the wifi network focuses<br />

on covering O-<strong>Ringen</strong> Square, including competitor services and<br />

the sports shops, as well as smaller areas around service stations at<br />

the campsite and kiosks, sports shops and competitor services at<br />

the arenas.<br />

Even in small areas, the equipment can support large numbers of<br />

users, i.e. a couple of hundred people via each access point, without<br />

any real congestion. Altogether, it can support several thousand<br />

users at the same time, something which would not be possible<br />

with home equipment.<br />

– O-<strong>Ringen</strong> is an exciting and challenging event for us. The multiple<br />

arenas, which can be difficult to access, require good planning<br />

and close collaboration with Magnus and his team, something that<br />

we find works very well, says Hans Areskoug of Bluecom.<br />

Bluecom also provides the firewalls required to connect O-<strong>Ringen</strong><br />

Square and the arenas to the internet in a secure way. Traffic in the<br />

network is sorted to separate competitor wifi from priority traffic<br />

from the competition administration and kiosk payment terminals.<br />

– Our watchwords are flexibility and surpassing expectations.<br />

We’re good at supporting this kind of event, where an agile organising<br />

team is needed, with technically skilled project managers as<br />

well as technicians in the field who also have experience when it<br />

comes to this kind of event, adds Hans Areskoug.<br />

O-<strong>Ringen</strong>’s IT Manager Magnus Johansson explains:<br />

– Thanks to Bluecom’s equipment and skilled personnel, we can<br />

provide competitors with a stable and reliable wireless network.<br />

Competitors can make orders and entries, see results, pay using<br />

Swish, send pictures to their friends and family, or just surf. At<br />

the same time, our competition administration and other internal<br />

systems are guaranteed the capacity they need to provide results,<br />

audio broadcasts and more. Of course, we also need some volunteer<br />

officials to work with IT, but having Bluecom’s experienced<br />

personnel on location whenever we need them gives a sense of<br />

security, adds Magnus.<br />

Hackathon at O-<strong>Ringen</strong> this summer<br />

– What happens now?<br />

At this summer’s O-<strong>Ringen</strong>, we held a Hackathon that<br />

aimed to pose questions and spark discussion on<br />

sustainability and orienteering for young people. The<br />

Hackathon played an important part in the work of<br />

Swedish orienteering with regard to sustainability and<br />

was held with help from the Youth 2030 Movement.<br />

There were a total of 40 participants, of whom 32 were young<br />

people. The decision makers who attended were mostly<br />

representatives from the Swedish Orienteering Federation,<br />

O-<strong>Ringen</strong> and Bagheera.<br />

Participants worked in small groups of around five, with eight<br />

groups in total. They followed a process that started with understanding<br />

a challenge, then brainstorming solutions, developing<br />

ideas and lastly a visual presentation. There were five challenges:<br />

travel, material, school orienteering, the sport’s (lack of) visibility<br />

and inequality in circumstances.<br />

Are you curious about what we came up with?<br />

– We’re seeing that the ideas coming from the Hackathon and the<br />

summer’s idea workshops (which took place at the Rikslägret camp<br />

in Idre and at the confirmation camps in Sälen and Eksjö) are consistent<br />

with each other. Young people see clear synergies between<br />

transport and material issues and social and ecological sustainability,<br />

but otherwise we can say that the type of sustainability young<br />

people are most focused on is social sustainability. It’s clear that<br />

young people think the most important aspect for this is being able<br />

to orienteer wherever you are, and getting more people interested,<br />

says Anna Wennertorp from O-<strong>Ringen</strong>.<br />

– School orienteering is clearly an important subject for young<br />

orienteers. It was the area most groups wanted to work with – even<br />

in groups who were working on other areas, many people touched<br />

on this topic in their own discussions.<br />

Flexibility and the idea that schools should “understand” and<br />

implement the things that make orienteering fun are two key ways<br />

to improve young people’s experience of orienteering at school.<br />

It’s worth saying that digitalisation and digital solutions are not<br />

seen by young people to be so important. When talking to young<br />

people at O-<strong>Ringen</strong> before the hackathon – when we talked<br />

about, for example, launching a lift sharing app – many people<br />

underlined that solutions like this were already being used, or<br />

that people didn’t think they would work as people won’t use<br />

them, continues Anna.<br />

– In three upcoming episodes of the O-<strong>Ringen</strong> podcast will focus<br />

on young people and the following topics; travel, school orienteering<br />

and inequality in circumstances, finishes Anna.<br />

At Abyslätten, between Målilla and Mörlunda, you’ll find Kronogården.<br />

Mellingerum - Oskarshamn.<br />

Here on the farm, there are exciting new projects every day. Pick<br />

Slottsholmen - Västervik<br />

The food at Slottsholmen is inspired by the memories Björn Ulvaeus,<br />

who grew up in Västervik, and taste experiences from shows and performances<br />

40-odd physical signs take you on a route from the venue Klubben.<br />

There is also an accompanying app “Hultsfred – The Walk”, which<br />

Kalmar’s oldest attraction looks much the same as it did in 1592,<br />

but there’s still a lot to discover. Here you’ll find both permanent<br />

Greta Garbo Museum, Högsby – Högsby<br />

Greta Garbo is in the top five most famous Swedes of all time. At<br />

the museum in Högsby, you can follow her career with the help of<br />

Archipelago tours in Västervik - Västervik<br />

More Kastell – Högsby<br />

Here you’ll find Småland’s own Grand Canyon, with its dramatic<br />

scree, cliffs and running water, and a fine flora of mosses and<br />

lichens. An 8 km long ravine, widened and deepened by the huge<br />

volume of water created when inland ice melted 12,000 years ago.<br />

Jungnerholmarna – Mönsterås<br />

A beautiful area for walking in Fliseryd. This area is in a unique<br />

environment with exciting industrial history and valuable nature,<br />

by the river Emån.<br />

Gösjön i Berga – Högsby<br />

At Gjösjön you’ll find a big diving platform, playground, kiosk,<br />

crazy golf, accessible toilet with a ramp and another ramp to help<br />

access the water. You’ll also find Gösjöbadet campsite.<br />

Böda Sand – Öland<br />

On Öland’s most beautiful beach, with its 20 km of white sand,<br />

families, pensioners, couples and friends meet. Combine play,<br />

relaxation, sun and sand with group exercise, crazy golf, spa treatments<br />

and children’s activities.<br />

Vattenpalatset – Mönsterås<br />

Challenge a friend or colleague on a water slide that times you.<br />

Swim against the current in the jet stream channel, or in the lagoon.<br />

You can also take your time in the relaxation area.<br />

Blå Jungfrun and its many legends<br />

The island of countless legends, Blå Jungfrun (“The Blue<br />

Maiden”), also known as Blåkulla, is a granite dome<br />

towering 86 metres above sea level right out in the<br />

middle of Kalmarsund. It has sparked people’s curiosity<br />

and imagination since ancient times. Don’t miss the<br />

opportunity to visit this national park.<br />

Magical nature<br />

In the summer you can visit Blå Jungfrun on a day trip from<br />

Oskarshamn and Byxelkrok, or on your own boat. Its isolation and<br />

inaccessibility make Blå Jungfrun an exciting destination. You are<br />

met with multilevel terrain. Walkways guide you round the island<br />

and lead you to a lush arbour of ancient, tall and gnarled trees,<br />

fascinating caves where small entrances open up into huge caverns,<br />

and geological formations. On one of Blå Jungfrun’s clifftops there<br />

is a labyrinth that you can walk round to wish for fertility, good<br />

luck with fishing or perhaps a calm sea for the journey back? If you<br />

climb to the highest point on Blå Jungfrun you are met with panoramic<br />

views of coast of the mainland, Kalmar Strait and Öland,<br />

well worth the journey.<br />

Don’t tempt fate<br />

If you go to Blå Jungfrun, remember not to put any of the small<br />

stones in your pocket as a souvenir. The stories say that anyone<br />

who takes a stone from Blå Jungfrun will be plagued by bad luck<br />

until the stone is returned. In fact, every year Oskarshamn municipality<br />

receives stones from regretful tourists who have decided<br />

against tempting fate. And every year, they make sure to take these<br />

stones back to the island in Kalmar Strait. It’s just safest that way.<br />

Book your visit<br />

During the summer, you can take a boat tour to Blå Jungfrun on<br />

M/S Solkust or M/S Solfrun. These tours leave from Oskarshamn<br />

and Byxelkrok. Look around the amazing rock formations and<br />

caves, explore the enchanting labyrinth and visit the beautiful<br />

Many myths<br />

Perhaps the island’s lonely location has been the reason why so<br />

many legends have been told about its history. The rugged beauty<br />

of the rock formations, formed by inland ice, has given rise to<br />

much speculation about what might go on there, out at sea in<br />

one of Sweden’s most famous national parks. And of course your<br />

imagination can run wild thinking of all that has happened here,<br />

on an island that was already inhabited in the Stone Age. In times<br />

gone past, people thought a godlike being lived on the island.<br />

Seafarers, who have been hit by storms here more than anywhere<br />

else, thought of Blåkulla as especially dangerous. They have steered<br />

clear of this place for a long time and there are countless stories<br />

about it. The most well-known and enduring myth is probably<br />

the one that witches fly to Blåkulla every Maundy Thursday for a<br />

witches’ sabbath.<br />

Along the southern shores of Vättern stretches<br />

Småland’s biggest city. This is where town meets country<br />

in perfect harmony. Whether you’re born and raised here<br />

or this is your very first visit, there’s a lot to experience<br />

here. This region is a paradise for nature lovers, with one<br />

of Sweden’s largest oak forests, nature reserves, walking<br />

routes, refreshing dips in the crystal clear waters of<br />

Vättern, wide open views and charming country lanes to<br />

cycle along. Wherever you find yourself in the city, the<br />

countryside is always close. Welcome to Jönköping!<br />

Jönköping invites you to a first class O-<strong>Ringen</strong> City. Located at<br />

Rosenlund next to Elmia exhibition centre and with stunning<br />

views across Vättern, we are please to offer a compact and central<br />

concept, with O-<strong>Ringen</strong> Square and the campsite side by side.<br />

There are bathing areas within walking distance: an indoor adventure<br />

pool and Vättern outdoors. An obstacle course, bowling,<br />

skatepark and padel are just a few of the other activities available<br />

within a kilometre of O-<strong>Ringen</strong> City.<br />

A city full of life<br />

Jönköping has an international college and 140,000 inhabitants,<br />

and is buzzing with life all year round. The city centre has<br />

picturesque avenues and canals which open out onto three lakes:<br />

Vättern, Munksjön and Rocksjön. If you want to wander round<br />

the old town, explore local shops or enjoy good food and drink,<br />

the Matchstick area (Tändsticksområdet) is the place for you. The<br />

whole area is classed as a listed building and has a long history,<br />

which you can experience especially at the Match Museum.<br />

Proximity to nature is another major advantage of our destination.<br />

With its soft paths, beautiful views, John Bauer forests, wide<br />

marshlands, lakes and hillsides, the southern Vättern area is the<br />

perfect place to explore.<br />

The shores of Vättern<br />

Right in the middle of Jönköping you’ll find Vätterstranden, a<br />

beach and bathing area with a seaside feel and fantastic views.<br />

From O-<strong>Ringen</strong> City you can follow the cycleway for a few<br />

kilometres along Vättern, into the centre of Jönköping, where<br />

shopping, culture and a wide variety of restaurants await. With its<br />

whole kilometre of shoreline, Vätternstranden has room for everyone,<br />

as well as clean and clear water and a sandy beach. If it’s too<br />

cold for a dip in the lake, there are lawns, activities and restaurants<br />

nearby. Why not play volleyball on one of the beach volleyball<br />

pitches, have a play at the playground or ride along the beautiful<br />

path by the lake, enjoying the views by bike. If you cycle a couple of<br />

kilometres in the opposite direction you’ll get to Huskvarna, where<br />

among other things you can visit Husqvarna Factory Museum,<br />

have coffee and cake at Brunstorps Gård and go on to Äppledalen,<br />

known as “Småland’s answer to Tuscany”, with its local food entrepreneurs<br />

and attractions.<br />

Cycling in Jönköping<br />

All around Jönköping you can find everything from beautiful<br />

country lanes to challenging hills and endless gravel rides.<br />

Whether you’re looking to really dig in up a hill or enjoy a gentle<br />

outing on gravel, we have something for you. There’s a wealth of<br />

places to discover. At Huskvarnaberget nature reserve, with its<br />

beautiful views over Huskvarna and Jönköping, you can find the<br />

popular mountain bike arena at IKHP, which offers flowing tracks,<br />

drops and some challenging climbs up the slalom hill. There’s the<br />

EuroMTB 2016 track and many others to test. Hallbystugan, just<br />

to the west of Jönköping, is well-known among mountain bikers.<br />

Here you will find tracks for all ages and abilities. Don’t miss their<br />

pump track! At Gränna you can cycle on looping trails as well as<br />

Three unique experiences<br />

in and around Jönköping<br />

Here are some attractions you’ll definitely want to visit<br />

during your stay in Jönköping and the surrounding area. Of<br />

course there are many more destinations and experiences<br />

but here are three you really won’t want to miss.<br />

Tabergsgruvan<br />

Iron ore was mined here from the 15th century, right up until the<br />

1950s The seam itself, however, was formed some 1,200 million<br />

years ago. During the summer you can take a guided tour here.<br />

You will also find the only bat museum in Sweden at the mine.<br />

Rosenlund Rosarium<br />

Right next to O-<strong>Ringen</strong> City you will find Rosenlund Hall and<br />

Rosenlund Rosarium, which among other things has 550 varieties<br />

of rose. In 2022, Rosenlund Rosarium won the distinction Award<br />

of Garden Excellence and became the first rose garden in Sweden<br />

to be listed as one of the best rose gardens in the world to visit.<br />

Bake some Polkagris rock<br />

In the middle of the 19th century, Amalia Erikson created a variety<br />

of rock confectionery that went on to become Gränna’s most<br />

famous export and one of Sweden’s most popular souvenirs. Today,<br />

there are around a dozen kitchens in Gränna where you can see the<br />

process. Here the sugar is boiled, stretched, kneaded and twisted<br />

just like in Amalia’s time and at some of the kitchens you can even<br />

have a go at baking your own Polkagris stick of rock.<br />

Terrain that’s waiting for you<br />

Another side of Småland awaits<br />

In our effort to bring you interesting competition areas,<br />

we have of course sought after traditional inland Småland<br />

terrain, alongside finding areas that are suitable for<br />

everyone. Younger and older. Recreational and elite<br />

runners. There will be some steeper hills, denser areas<br />

and wooded marshes, but overall runnability will be good<br />

and we will throw in some twists here and there, such as<br />

negative contour detail or vague, flatter areas. Remember<br />

that you make your own route choices!<br />

More to come<br />

As O-<strong>Ringen</strong> Jönköping 2025 comes closer, we will release more<br />

information about the terrain. Maybe it will be presented in a new<br />

way…?<br />

We will also help you by giving tips on how to tackle the navigational<br />

challenges.<br />

You have to stay on the ball. You can move very quickly in places but the<br />

terrain has areas of more complex contours, where you’ll need to slow<br />

down and take more care.<br />

After the Smålandskusten, we’re going… back to Småland.<br />

The tagline “Another Småland” has already been taken by<br />

Nässjö but it works well here, too. From the coast to the<br />

land. From sea to lake. From the small town to the big city.<br />

Are the same clubs organising?<br />

– No. Småland is a large area with many active clubs. None of the<br />

clubs are helping at both. We will, however, learn a lot from the<br />

Smålandskusten and their experiences, says Måns Lennermo, the<br />

Project Manager for O-<strong>Ringen</strong> Jönköping 2025.<br />

What about the terrain?<br />

– This will also be very different. The coastal terrain will be<br />

swapped for inland terrain. Mature, magical Småland forest. A<br />

moraine landscape with larger hill shapes, to give some examples<br />

of the differences,” says Måns.<br />

But some things must be similar?<br />

– Of course there are some similarities. We can also offer great<br />

attractions near the competitions and five stages across all disciplines.<br />

Then there’s having the traditional campsite and O-<strong>Ringen</strong><br />

City in the same place, says Måns.<br />

And will the competitors enjoy all this?<br />

– Of course! That was clear from our stand in Åre. People really<br />

appreciate that we are able to provide a compact and central<br />

concept, focusing on the campsite. The fact that there are bathing<br />

areas within walking distance, the whole of Vätterstranden and<br />

everything that a city like Jönköping can offer within a few kilometres<br />

is something we are very proud of and are looking forward<br />

to sharing, says Måns.<br />

And how are preparations going generally?<br />

– We are finalising agreements with landowners. The organising<br />

team is taking shape well. In theory, most of the tasks are already<br />

assigned. Excitement is starting to bubble among our officials.<br />

Everyone wants to know more, to get stuck into their roles, to<br />

welcome you. But for now it’s time to be patient and keep working<br />

away steadily, finishes Måns.<br />

Poppels City Brewery<br />

Poppels City Brewery is a unique food and<br />

beer experience in one of Gothenburg’s most<br />

exciting neighbourhoods. At the newly built<br />

Platinan at Hisingsbron you’ll find the world’s<br />

largest oak barrel pilsner brewery and a restaurant<br />

with room for over 170 guests. The restaurant<br />

is working towards circular solutions, with<br />

a menu built around sustainability, plant-based<br />

food and bread.<br />

It’s almost 20 years since Gothenburg last hosted O-<strong>Ringen</strong><br />

and in 2026 it’s time for it to return!<br />

No fewer than 17 Gothenburg clubs are joining forces to organise<br />

O-<strong>Ringen</strong> 2026. From the big clubs like Göteborg-Majorna OK,<br />

IFK Göteborg and Sävedalens AIK, to smaller ones such as IK<br />

Stern, IK Marin Väst and many others.<br />

In recent years, Gothenburg has built up a wealth of experience<br />

in organising big orienteering events, including the Junior World<br />

Championships, World Masters Championships, Swedish Championships,<br />

10-MILA and most recently the Swedish Sprint Championships<br />

in 2022. We are taking all this valuable experience into our<br />

O-<strong>Ringen</strong> preparations.<br />

Our own local experience combined with the collective experience<br />

of the O-<strong>Ringen</strong> team is a winning formula for a successful<br />

O-<strong>Ringen</strong> 2026.<br />

O-<strong>Ringen</strong> City will be at Stora Holm, Hisingen, a rural idyll only a short<br />

distance away from each competition stage and the buzz of the city.<br />

Stora Holm is normally a training facility for drivers and includes a<br />

skidpan, but for one week it will be transformed into O-<strong>Ringen</strong> City,<br />

with room for 2000 camping pitches. It will be a compact O-<strong>Ringen</strong><br />

City, close to restaurants, O-<strong>Ringen</strong> Square and other facilities.<br />

There is also a good electricity supply, which means we will be<br />

able to supply many camping pitches with electricity.<br />

O-<strong>Ringen</strong> 2026 will offer exciting competition areas, with a<br />

very Gothenburg feel, for both Orienteering, MTBO and Trail-O<br />

classes. Work is underway this autumn to find the areas that can<br />

provide the perfect challenge for everyone. We are hoping to be<br />

able to offer a stage featuring classic coastal terrain.<br />

There will be around 1200 of us Gothenburgers in orange T-shirts,<br />

doing all we can to make sure you have a fantastic overall experience.<br />

World Women’s Handball Championship<br />

1st – 11th December<br />

For the first time ever, the women’s handball world championships<br />

will be played on Swedish soil. Gothenburg is hosting Sweden’s<br />

group and the final rounds with matches at Scandinavium from<br />

1st–11th December. Cheer on your team from the stands and<br />

experience the championship magic with thousands of fans in a<br />

buzzing arena.<br />

Junior World Ice Hockey Championship<br />

26th December – 5th January<br />

In the Christmas holidays 2023/24, the IHF World Junior Championship<br />

will be played in Gothenburg. You can be sure of a big<br />

hockey festival in the city when the stars of the future meet to<br />

compete for the gold. Along with teams from nine other countries,<br />

Sweden will play matches at Scandinavium and Frölundaborg from<br />

26th December 2023 to 5th January 2024.<br />

Gothia Floorball Cup 4th – 7th January<br />

Gothia Innebandy Cup is one of the world’s biggest and most international<br />

floorball tours for young players. Every year, it is attended<br />

by over 470 from six to eight nations and over 1300 matches are<br />

played at 28 venues across Gothenburg.<br />

Gothenburg Horse Show 21st – 25th February<br />

You can be sure of horse mania and dramatic competitions when<br />

the world’s top horse riders and audience fill Scandinavium. Gothenburg<br />

Horse Show has also been voted the world’s best indoor<br />

Project is an inviting and cosy restaurant. What<br />

began as a cafe without a full kitchen has gone<br />

on to become one of the city’s Michelin starred<br />

restaurants. Eat something tasty from the seasonal<br />

Pop into the Saluhallen (market hall) and top up your energy levels<br />

The world’s biggest pizzeria, with its enormous roof terrace, in<br />

Stigbergs Square in cosy Majorna. Moreno’s grand premises feature<br />

long tables, pizza and tankards of beer. You never need to book a<br />

table here, no matter how big your group is. The worst case is that<br />

you would have to wait a little while in our bar. Or on our roof<br />

terrace, with wonderful views over Majorna and the Göta river.<br />

O-<strong>Ringen</strong>s biggest and most classic competition is<br />

to compete over five days.<br />

The winner for many of the classes is determined<br />

by an exciting chasing start on the final day of<br />

competition, available for Foot-O and Trail-O.<br />

MAIN CLASSES<br />

Our five-day main classes are most popular. You have an allocated,<br />

timed start. Our youngest competitors get an introduction to<br />

orienteering with the Inskolning class, where you can start when you<br />

want and everyone gets a prize, and the results only show who has<br />

taken part, with no times or positions. The competition is decided on<br />

the final day with a chasing start for everyone except Inskolning and<br />

DH10–DH12.<br />

New for O-<strong>Ringen</strong> 2024, DH75 and older have a free minute start,<br />

PARA-I<br />

5-DAYS<br />

Para-I is for anyone with an intellectual disability. The difficulty<br />

level of the class is green (very easy).<br />

The Para-I class is available on all five days, and as a chasing<br />

start. It is open to anyone with an IQ of under 75, the equivalent<br />

to attending a special school or having LSS support in Sweden.<br />

You do not need a Parapsports licence to compete. The Para-I<br />

course is very easy and is around 2 km. All five stages are foot<br />

Compete on easier courses in classes according to age and sex. Start<br />

when you want every day and no chasing start on the final day.<br />

The Para-I class is open for all ages. There is a free start for all<br />

stages and timing using SportIdent. Competitors can be joined<br />

by a coach/adult/friend on the course.<br />

There are twelve open orienteering classes, with different lengths<br />

and technical difficulty levels, that you can run every day. Start<br />

TRAIL-O CLASSES<br />

In the Trail-O competition map knowledge is<br />

in focus. Each control has up to five alternate<br />

control markers. You must remotely determine<br />

which control marker is correctly placed<br />

according to the control ring on the map and<br />

the control description. You compete in a class<br />

determined by its difficulty level, rather than<br />

age and gender. The competition takes place in<br />

easily passable terrain.<br />

There are five MTBO stages at O-<strong>Ringen</strong> 2024. Start times are<br />

pre-allocated and the competition finishes with a chasing start on<br />

the final day. MTBO is high-speed and is all about making quick<br />

route choice decisions. The maps are like those used in Foot-O. The<br />

biggest difference is how paths and tracks are marked. They show<br />

how easy they are to ride on. Put simply, the longer the dashes on<br />

the lines, the easier they are to ride.<br />

The course is in terrain with clear and connected features such as roads, larger paths, buildings and open land. The controls on a<br />

green course must always be placed on handrails and must provide reassurance that the competitor is following the correct route.<br />

Control features may be path bends, path junctions, telegraph posts, buildings or other clear features or objects.<br />

The terrain is the same as for green courses, i.e. clear and connected features, e.g. roads, larger paths, open land and buildings. The<br />

controls on a white course must mark only the end of one leg and the start of the next. The control features must therefore be easily<br />

identified and distinct. As well as green course features, controls on white courses may also be on e.g. boulders, crags, fences and<br />

similar features.<br />

Yellow courses can be in more difficult terrain but runnability and visibility must still be good. The terrain must have a connected<br />

network of roads, paths, fences, waterways, open areas etc. Control points may be on more difficult features, for example on the top<br />

of a very distinct hill, but must always have a clear attack point. There must be a clear catching feature behind controls.<br />

Orange and red courses must use runnable terrain, with gentler hills and forest, preferably with areas of cultivated land. Terrain<br />

details must be clear. Compared to green, white and yellow courses, more difficult control features may be used, for example larger<br />

re-entrants, distinct ridges, hills and crags. There must be a clear feature a maximum of 200 m before the control and a clear catching<br />

feature behind it.<br />

Same as for orange courses but you can encounter all types of terrain.<br />

All types of terrain may be used. Very physically tough terrain should be avoided. All types of control feature may be used. Compared<br />

to orange and red courses, purple courses place higher demands on, planning skills, choosing quick routes ahead of safe routes and<br />

finding controls without clear catching features behind them.<br />

On blue and black courses, the difficulty should always suit skilled orienteers, even if anyone can compete. The increased difficulty<br />

level compared to other courses is because more of the orienteering uses contour features, detailed terrain and smaller features.<br />

Same as for blue courses but you can encounter all types of terrain.

With the Stage Start option, you can choose the course<br />

you want to run at each stage of O-<strong>Ringen</strong>. The Stage<br />

Start option is available for each orienteering discipline<br />

that is offered at O-<strong>Ringen</strong>; Foot-O, MTBO and Trail-O.<br />

For our younger orienteers we offer Introduction and U-classes.<br />

Theese classes can also be booked for 5 days main- and short classes.<br />

Free start times apply to everyone so you can start when it suits<br />

you. If you are an adult and a beginner, there are Try-it out classes<br />

to start with. Then you can gradually choose a more difficult and /<br />

or longer course.<br />

For MTBO, both orienteering technical difficulty and cycling<br />

technical difficulty are indicated. Class/Course indicates the<br />

orienteering technical difficulty. Bicycle level indicates the bicycle<br />

technical difficulty.<br />

If you are new to the sport of orienteering, you can get help with<br />

the basic skills and with finding the right course for you through<br />

our orienteering school, located at each of the arenas used for foot<br />

CHILD CARE<br />

During O-<strong>Ringen</strong> we offer child care for kids aged 3-8 years at<br />

Arena Rosenfors, Arena Gunnarsö och Arena Döderhultsdalen.<br />

Pre book your child care at oringen.se. You can leave your child<br />

with us for up to 3 hours at a time (while you race).<br />

MINIKNAT<br />

For the youngest orienteers there are daily Miniknat, or String<br />

courses, at Arena Rosenfors, Arena Gunnarsö och Arena<br />

Döderhultsdalen.<br />

In Miniknat, kids follow a streamered course between check<br />

points, which feature different activities, challenges, and fun surprises.<br />

They do, of course, get a map to follow and a SI card.<br />

There is no timing or results list, but all children get a prize<br />

when they finish.<br />

You can pre book Miniknat at oringen.se or book it directly at<br />

the arena.<br />

BAGHEERA ORIENTEERING SCHOOL<br />

Have you never tried orienteering but want to try? Or re you a former<br />

orienteer and want to refresh your skills? At the Orienteering School,<br />

we will cover all the necessary skills that you need in order to set out<br />

by yourself on an easy-level O-<strong>Ringen</strong> course. We will then come with<br />

you to the start and help you get going.<br />

Folksam motionsloppsförsäkring is for participants in<br />

exercise and competition events and gives you back the<br />

entire registration fee if you become acutely ill or injured<br />

and can not participate. The insurance also includes an<br />

olycksfallsförsäkring (accident insurance) when you are<br />

training. Only valid for Swedish residents.<br />

BAGHEERA YOUTH RELAY<br />

The traditional youth relay is organized in conjunction<br />

with the opening ceremony July 22. The relay is between<br />

club teams but you can also create a combination team<br />

between clubs. Teams consists of four runners, one from<br />

each classes D14, H14, D16 and H16.<br />

DH21 Motion, DH35-DH40 (short and recreational classes<br />

included) have map scale 1:10 000 for all stages.<br />

DH45 and older classes (short and recreational classes included)<br />

OPEN CLASSES<br />

Lätt 10.0, Svår 5.0, Svår 7.5 have 1:10 000 for all stages. All other open<br />

classes have 1:7500 for all stages. The same map scales apply to the<br />

open classes regardless of you enter for 5-days, 3-days or stage start.<br />

For Training courses with timing, the classes Svår 5,0 and Svår<br />

7,5 use map scale 1:10 000 and all other classes have map scale<br />

1:7500.<br />

Warm up for O-<strong>Ringen</strong> with one of our Smålandskust timed training<br />

courses, from 18 th –21 st July at Djupeträsk, around 3.5 km from<br />

O-<strong>Ringen</strong> camping (depending on exactly where you're pitched).<br />

Register using our booking portal or at Competitor Services at<br />

O-<strong>Ringen</strong> Square. No registration at Djupeträsk. You can collect<br />

your map at Competitor Services at O-<strong>Ringen</strong> Square, where you<br />

can also download your SI card after you run.<br />
