Bird Droppings 

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

Everyone who goes to the hawk watch 

platform in November will swear 

“they just go for the show,” or, maybe 

“the parade of vultures.” They lie. 

Everyone goes hoping to see a Golden 

Eagle. The “king of birds.” The bird that rode 

on the staff of Rome’s conquering legions. 

Found across the globe, in North America, 

they are a western and arctic breeders. The 

Arctic is where our migrating birds herald 

from. Flying down the Atlantic coast, a few of 

these dark-bodied, golden-hooded birds may 

winter in the marshes of the Mullica River, 

but most head inland to the mountains of 

Kentucky and Tennessee where they may take 

prey to the size of small deer. 

This feat that should surprise nobody, in 

Alaska, Golden Eagles prey upon Dall Sheep, 

knocking them off ledges and feasting on the 

remains. In Mongolia, the birds are trained 

by falconers to hunt in pairs to immobilize 

wolves. That’s a tough line of work but one 

the birds have excelled at since the reign of 

Genghis Kahn. 

Here, on the Atlantic coast, the birds 

mostly prey upon waterfowl, but I once saw 

a Golden Eagle strike a Great Blue Heron and 

in the west I’ve watched them hunt Sandhill 

Cranes. 

For we Cape May residents, the November 

migration is our only opportunity to gain a 

glimpse of these magnificent birds. 

Strong, northwest winds in November are 

the right formula for eagles in Cape May come 

mid-December the migratory window closes. 

Most of the Golden Eagles we see here are 

juveniles sporting bright white wing patches 

and gleaming white tails that brandish broad 

banded tips. The golden hackles may gleam so 

brightly in the sun that, head on, the birds can 

be mistaken for adult Bald Eagles. 

More typically, Golden Eagles are mistaken 

for Turkey Vultures which like Golden 

Eagle fly with uplifted wings, a “dihedral.” 

Indeed the eagles sometimes join the local 

vultures in their swirling kettles where the 

eagles rock steady flight will distinguish it. 

Vultures are tipsy in flight. 

But with so many experienced hawk 

watchers on hand, you need not worry about 

missing a bird. The appearance of a Golden 

Eagle brings everyone to their feet. Most 

migrants do not linger, Delaware Bay is no 

obstacle for such a strong flier. 

November is the most exciting month 

for hawk watching in Cape May, over a dozen 

species are possible and there are lots of other 

late season migrants, too.

Not to sound ungrateful, but did this 

Thanksgiving creep up on us? It 

pounced like Aunt Mildred’s “surprise 

savory pie.” Now, the entertainment 

industry wants our attention 

as we have a little time to spend watching 

together on big and little screens. Let’s see 

what’s out there! 

This year, there’s a parade of titles based 

on familiar books! There’s one reimagining 

pulled from a legendary classic. There are 

animated creations for all ages, and concerts 

to catch if you weren’t able to buy tickets. And 

yep, best believe there’s a superhero or two 

thrown in for good measure. Oh and there’s 

enough Oscar buzzworthiness to go around. 

Since my favorite book (published in

Well, dip me in chocolate! Wonka looks like 

a winner! The movie comes out in December 

and tells the origin story of the legendary 

candy maker. People may be tired of Wilder’s 

Wonka or critical of Depp’s reimagining — but 

I say they’re all good! Bring on a third helping! 

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and The 

Marvels are our superhero entries. Wish is 

a new animated feature from Disney, and 

Migration is a duck road-trip movie from 

Illumination studios. 

As for Oscar Buzz— any one of these could 

get a nom! And it’s not even in December!

Embrace your inner child this holiday 

season and visit the carousel at 

Congress Hall’s Winter Wonderland. 

The word carousel comes from 

12th century military training exercises 

called “carosellos,” in which knights 

rode in a circle, tossing a ball to one another, 

to improve teamwork and coordination. 

Children imitated the knights, and eventually, 

costumed “carrousels” were reenacted 

for entertainment. By the 18th century, fairs 

across Europe featured carousels with toy 

horses, suspended by chains, turning in a 

circle. A platform was introduced in the 19th 

century, followed by gears to allow up and 

down movement of the horses. Early carousels 

were powered by a human turning 

a crank, but in 1861, steam power replaced 

the crank, and was replaced by electricity. 

The National Zoo in Washington, D.C. has a 

solar-powered carousel. 

Carousels crossed the ocean in 1799, 

when the first American “wooden horse circus 

ride” appeared in Salem, Massachusetts. 

American designers created larger carousels, 

with elaborate carvings and artwork on the 

outside-facing sides of the horses and the 

addition of mirrors, lights and organ music. 

The largest indoor carousel in the world is 

located in Wisconsin and features 269 animals, 

182 chandeliers and 20,000 lights. 

Binghamton, New York earned the nickname 

of the “Carousel Capital of the World” 80 years 

ago, after a man named George F. Johnson 

donated six to the city with the provision 

that no one could ever be charged for a ride, 

because carousels contribute “to a happy life” 

and “help youngsters grow into strong and 

useful citizens.” 19th century doctors agreed, 

recommending carousels to improve circulation. 

Legend has it that Charles Lindbergh 

rode a Coney Island carousel to relax before 

his transatlantic flight, and Winston Churchill 

did to boost morale during World War II. 

The carousel will return to Congress 

Hall’s Winter Wonderland, along with the 

popular train ride, from November 24 through 

January 1, Fridays 4 to 9pm, Saturdays 11am to 

9pm and Sundays 11am to 8pm. There’s also 

an “enchanted” shopping village with “candy 

cane-striped tents” featuring unusual holiday 

items, Cape May-themed gifts and “curiosities.” 

Cape Resorts also offers “Breakfast 

with Santa” every Saturday and Sunday from 

November 25 through December 24, 2023 

— reservations are essential. Other activities 

include cookie decorating and “Santa’s

I have three children. For the first time,

one of them will take over the tradition, they 

have each decided to have their own dinner. 

They all have partners/spouses and children, 

and I understand, but they also all expect me 

to either be at three places at once or choose 

one of them. I can’t stand it. It’s a lose-lose and 

I don’t know what to do except start cooking.

A good friend of mine has invited us to 

their house for a holiday party. We love them, 

but not their two dogs. They refuse to put 

them in another part of the house and they’re 

not well-behaved. Jump on people, often 

resulting in a spilt cocktail and/or jump on the 

sofa the minute we sit down. These are Golden 

Retrievers — not lap dogs. Is there nothing we 

can say? It would mean a rift in our friendship 

to not attend, but my husband and I are 

groaning at the close encounters of the furry

dog aversion, but that said, she has the perfect 

solution. Naturally, you will bring a hostess 

gift. Stop at Splash for a gift of sea glass.

Market. Talk to Shaine at the butcher’s section 

and ask him for two soup bones for the dogs 

and let them have it. Chances are you won’t see 

a hair of their furry heads the entire night.

BLAZE is a handsome boy who came to the 

shelter when his owner died and is a bit anxious 

over the turn his life has taken. He does 

require some basic training for leash walking 

and certain cue but is very treat motivated. A 

home that understands his anxiety and is willing 

to work with him will allow him to grow 

into a fine companion. 

PIPPY is a lively, sweet-tempered girl who 

came to the shelter when her family could 

no longer care for her. She is a one-year-old 

boxer who does need a refresher on basic cues. 

She does enjoy learning new things and her 

leash skills are good. Pippy loves car rides and 

her previous owner said she is good with children 

and other dogs. 

BLUE is a sweet six-year-old boy who came 

to the shelter when his owner could no longer 

care for him. He is mild mannered and loves to 

be with humans. Blue has terrific leash manners 

and enjoys going for walks. According 

to his last owner, he’s good with children and 

likes car rides. Blue would make a wonderful 

family companion.

BIJOU AND FRENCHIE are a brother and sister 

who were trapped in a trailer park community 

and found flea infested and starved. This 

pair is very scared but not aggressive at all. 

They have no domesticated well, so a barn or 

warehouse situation would fit them perfectly. 

They’re great with other cats and up to date on 

all vaccinations and neutered/spayed.
