Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe 

even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining 

establishments. Well we’re shifting into the holiday shopping 

season and it’s only fitting that this column follows suit. 

We’ll give you the skinny on the clothes we try on, the candles 

we smell, the snacks we sample, who we bumped into and, you know, 

the general lay of the land PLUS where to find the best gifts this season. 

The place: Just for Laughs on the Washington Street Mall next to 

their sister store Kaleidoscope. It’s located across the way from the 

Original Fudge Kitchen. 

The story: While their first store Kaleidoscope opened its doors in 

2001, Just for Laughs came later in 2010 when Susan, Barry and Aaron’s 

humor was a hit through a small selection of Anne Taintor gifts. They 

decided to dedicate an entire store to sarcastic, caustic and childish 

gifts and Just for Laughs was born. They’re very clear — if you’re easily 

offended, this may not be the store for and that’s OK! Check out Kaleidoscope 

next door. 

The products: The shared giggles and gasps you’ll have while 

browsing the store will be frequent. Their variety of Blue Q Crew socks 

are colorful both in fabric and words from messages including “Hi, I 

don’t care, thanks,” and “I have to pee... again.” You’ll really have a laugh 

when you check out their Fiddler’s Elbow kitchen towels with the most 

honest feelings of those using them like the animal lovers and people 

haters. There are also t-shirts reading less-than-classy messages, vulgar 

coffee mugs and books, plus gag gifts that will have even the most 

proper grandparents crack a smile. The stocking stuffers you’ll find 

are endless and a great way to add some humor into your home. Card 

games, candles, magnets, finger puppets, soaps... the list goes on! 

The takeaway: Just for Laughs is carefully stocked with everything 

to make you do just that, laugh! Some items are inappropriate, politically 

incorrect and even gross, and may not be for the faint of heart. If 

you’re looking to ruffle some feathers all in good fun at the next family 

gathering, lighten the mood at the office, or pull a prank or two on your 

partner, stop in the next time your shopping on the Washington Street 

Mall.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

This holiday season, forget about the 

sweater and electronics. This year, 

give someone a hobby they will enjoy 

for the rest of their lives. I’m talking 

about bird watching, a hobby enjoyed 

by 50 million North American residents. 

It’s a treasure hunt and the playing field 

is everywhere. From your own back yard to 

Papua New Guinea. 

There are 10,000 bird species on the 

planet. Collect them all and you win a lifetime 

of travel. But if you never get farther than Cape 

May, your days will be filled with treasure. 

Over 400 species have been recorded in the 

county, making Cape May one of the most 

bird-rich places on earth. 

All you need are binoculars and a field 

guide to the birds. Both can be had for less 

than $70. That’s less than a round of golf or 

dinner for two in Cape May. Most local birding 

locations are free. Every national wildlife 

refuge in North America can be accessed with 

the purchase of a single Federal duck stamp. 

Your unofficial lifetime goal should you 

choose to bird only in North America is 700 

species. So what’s it going to be? A lifelong 

treasure hunt or a life spent watching reruns 

of Gilligan’s Island or inane game shows? 

Let’s say you chose a life of adventure. 

Step one: Head down to Cape May Bird 

Observatory and get fitted with birder worthy 

binoculars — not all binoculars work in 

the bird watching arena. If you tried birding 

before but were frustrated, it was because the 

binoculars you were using were inadequate. 

Birding-worthy binoculars start at $49 and 

they focus fast, focus close and offer a bright, 

sharp image. 

Step two: Buy a well-conceived, userfriendly 

field guide to birds. I recommend the 

Kaufman guide, but the Sibley excels, too. If 

you own an Audubon Field Guide with the 

green plastic cover, throw it away. Buy a guide 

that works. 

Step three, pick up a free Cape May bird 

checklist. 

Step four: go outside, start scooping 

up treasure, each new species you identify 

counts as one. 

Try Bunker Pond, Lake Lily or South Cape 

May, ducks abound at these locations in winter 

and ducks play fair, swimming in the 

open where they are easily viewed. Different 

habitats host a different array of species. 

A trip to Second Avenue jetty will garner 

Purple Sandpipers, Red-throated Loon and 

Bonaparte’s Gull. And those sandpipers on 

the beach are Sanderlings. So much to see.

Who else has been waiting for a 

movie adaptation of the book 

“All the Light We Cannot See?” 

This has been a favorite since 

I read it five years ago. Netflix 

released a four-part miniseries this month. 

The adaptation is a captivating story, both 

weaving between 1944 German-occupied 

France and a few years before. 

The miniseries celebrates the essence, 

setting, and characters of the book. Marie 

(Aria Mia Loberti) is blind and a renegade 

radio host, and Werner (Louis Hofman) is an 

orphan and radio engineer wizard. The two 

have a bond through radio. Her broadcasts are 

punishable by death, and he’s forced by nazis 

to track transmissions and kill broadcasters. 

Change radio to cyberspace, and sadly 

this story can easily be told in our times. How 

stupid of me to think wars, bombing of innocent 

civilians, and crazy evil men wanting to 

control entire populations were in the past. 

Marie and her father, Daniel (Mark 

Ruffalo), flee Paris after the nazis invade to 

The Movie Column

join his uncle, Etienne (played by House star 

Hugh Laurie), in the major French port city of 

Saint-Malo. Although the narrative is fiction, 

the German siege of Saint-Malo was tragically 

real. Daniel and Marie escape with a rare 

jewel said to have mythological powers. One 

disturbingly villainous nazi officer (played by 

Lars Eidinger) wants that stone badly! 

Marie asks her father how they will reach 

Saint-Malo? There are no trains, and nobody 

will take them because, as she observes, 

“kindness is dead and all the people of the 

world have become evil at the same time.” 

Daniel simply answers, “not all the people.” 

Werner and Marie’s bond was through 

a radio show when they were younger that 

helped children cope with the horrors of war. 

He said, “The tyrant is a child of pride who 

drinks from his sickening cup of recklessness 

and vanity until, from his high crest, he plummets 

headlong to the dust of hope.” 

When I read the book years ago, few could 

have predicted the state of war we would 

be witnessing today. On this count, author 

Anthony Doerr has proven to be somewhat 

prophetic. But as Werner’s sister (played by 

Luna Wedler) pleads with her brother as he 

was taken by the nazis, “Keep the inside of 

your soul the same. Keep the frequency the 

same,” so good people must resist evil tyrants 

and their atrocities. Please… soldier on!

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, plan your holiday shopping list! 

Some people are gold-medal shoppers. 

They know how to use the expertise 

of store staff; they keep their receipts 

organized for returns; and they can 

carry almost as much as Santa. For the 

rest of us, I’ve collected some tips. 

First, have a plan. Dress for success with 

comfortable shoes and clothes that make it 

easy to try things on. Organize your coupons 

and customer loyalty cards, whether paper 

or digital. Think about the layout of your 

shopping destination. If you’re headed to the 

Washington Street Mall, for example, note the 

locations of the restrooms and the benches at 

Rotary Park — a good place to take a break and 

evaluate your haul mid-shop. Consider where 

to park — this is one time not to take your bike. 

Treat yourself to a small coffee from Coffee 

Tyme before you start and finish it before you 

enter any stores. Schedule a food break, but 

time things to avoid the crowds. Have a late 

breakfast and skip lunch so you don’t spend 

time waiting for a table. Bring home a charcuterie 

board from The Cheese Shop and a 

loaf of bread from A Ca Mia and call it dinner 

if you’re too tired to cook. You don’t have to 

reinvent the wheel; you just want to give people 

a little something to let them know you’re 

thinking of them. Themed gifts make shopping 

easier — buy them all beach toys for next 

summer, or get everyone a rune necklace from 

Swede Things or a Christmas tree ornament 

from Winterwood. Cape Mayniac hats for all 

the nieces and nephews were a hit for me one 

year. For the person who has everything, get 

something they’ll use up, like fancy soap from 

A Place On Earth or Bath Time, or something 

from the Beef Jerky Experience. Or a gift for 

their dog from Collar and Bone. 

The Cape May lovers in the crowd might 

like beach decor — Art Block has unusual 

items from local artists — or tee shirts from 

Beachlove. For the person who puts everyone 

else first, consider jewelry inspired by Cape 

May’s victorian vibe. Gift cards will make it 

easier for giftees to visit their favorite eateries. 

If you’re giving cash — the perpetual favorite 

of teenagers as well as young adults with student 

loans — consider wrapping it creatively 

— around a treat from Louisa’s Chocolate Bar 

or The Original Fudge Kitchen, or include a 

clever card from Whale’s Tale. 

Rekindle your holiday spirit with some 

actual celebrating — pick your spot for 

the West Cape May Christmas Parade on 

December 2. Pause to enjoy the music from

My grandmother is in her 60s and in 

pretty good shape, but she’s insists on wearing 

a bikini. My parents are hosting a Christmas 

weekend gathering at the Grand Hotel and 

we are all encouraged to use the indoor pool 

Saturday afternoon. It’s embarrassing and 

I don’t want to be anywhere near her. My 

parents are clueless. My cousins roll their eyes. 

I’m 13 and I don’t wear a bikini. I don’t even 

wear a two-piece. And I’m on the swim team. 

I want to stay home or at least hide in my room, 

but I know my parents will make me go. My 

mother said I could invite my friend to join us. 

It is one thing to endure this with just family, 

but now strangers will be subjected to it. What

Oh dear. I hate to tell you this, but you are 

going to have to suck it up. As your parents 

wisely realize, none of you have any control 

over grandma and her outfit choices. Just warn 

your friend ahead of time and concentrate on 

having a good time. You might want to take 

note of these facts and remember them so that 

when you are in your 60s, you can decide to go 

with a one-piece or two. 

Dear Answer Lady 

I am invited to a Christmas party the 

weekend of the West Cape May Christmas 

Parade. I’m not sure my best friend is invited, 

who is also friends with the couple. She 

asked me what I was doing for the parade, 

and I skirted the question. I don’t like being 

duplicitous, but I don’t want to hurt her 

feelings. I also know that if she is not invited, 

she will try to get me to score an invitation for 

her. What would you do? — Nervous Nellie 

Dear Nervous 

It seems to me this is much ado about 

nothing. Just tell her. You didn’t issue the 

invitations. The party is not at your house. 

It’s out of your control. Plus, you don’t know 

that she hasn’t been invited and is trying to 

sound you out. As to her trying to pressure 

you to “score” her an invitation, that is out of 

the question and will probably ensure you 

never get another invitation. Be sure to stop 

by Sunset Liquor and bring a hostess gift, 

otherwise YOU might end up on the cutting 

room floor next year.

BLAZE is a handsome boy who came to the 

shelter when his owner died and is a bit anxious 

over the turn his life has taken. He does 

require some basic training for leash walking 

and certain cue but is very treat motivated. A 

home that understands his anxiety and is willing 

to work with him will allow him to grow 

into a fine companion. 

PIPPY is a lively, sweet-tempered girl who 

came to the shelter when her family could 

no longer care for her. She is a one-year-old 

boxer who does need a refresher on basic cues. 

She does enjoy learning new things and her 

leash skills are good. Pippy loves car rides and 

her previous owner said she is good with children 

and other dogs. 

BLUE is a sweet six-year-old boy who came 

to the shelter when his owner could no longer 

care for him. He is mild mannered and loves to 

be with humans. Blue has terrific leash manners 

and enjoys going for walks. According 

to his last owner, he’s good with children and 

likes car rides. Blue would make a wonderful 

family companion.

BIJOU AND FRENCHIE are a brother and sister 

who were trapped in a trailer park community 

and found flea infested and starved. This 

pair is very scared but not aggressive at all. 

They have no domesticated well, so a barn or 

warehouse situation would fit them perfectly. 

They’re great with other cats and up to date on 

all vaccinations and neutered/spayed.
