As autumn winds down, birders gird 

themselves for the privations of 

winter, fewer birds and less daylight. 

Happily, in Cape May, privations 

are mitigated by the wealth of 

wintering species. Cape May’s Christmas Bird 

Count leads all northeaster counts. 

Waterfowl abound on unfrozen lakes and 

just offshore, to get a taste of our seabird 

wealth, take a transect across Delaware Bay on 

the ferry. Not only will you see lots of scooters 

and Lesser Scaup, but you’ll also be treated 

to Northern Gannet, Red-throated Loon and 

on the Lewes breakwater, Great Cormorant. 

Some years Razorbills, a penguin-like alcid, 

may be seen on morning trips. I suspect they 

forage over the shoals in the bay. 

If you want to save the cost of a walk-on 

ferry crossing, many of these birds can also 

be seen around the Second Avenue Jetty in 

Cape May. The hardy Purple Sandpipers 

scrambling over the jetty are just a bonus. 

While most Arctic breeding shorebirds elect 

to winter farther south, the doughty Purple 

Bird Droppings 

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

Sandpiper winters on rocky coasts and jetties 

all the way to Greenland. As the planet’s 

northernmost wintering sandpiper, Some 

North American breeders even winter in 

Spitzbergen and Iceland. 

On sandy beaches strollers are treated 

to waves of Sanderling whose feeding antics 

make it seem the birds are playing tag with the 

waves. Wintering gulls, in assorted plumages 

line the beach but you will search in vain for 

Laughing Gull, our “summer gull.” These have 

moved farther south. 

This winter, cardinals, Blue Jays, and Redbellied 

Woodpeckers add splashes of color to 

the winter landscape at your feeders. But if all 

your feeders attract are Carolina Chickadees, 

you will be well served. Across winter woodlands 

chickadees form the core of mixed feeding 

flocks. Being attuned to the lively banter of 

chickadees may lead you to a blizzard of birds. 

The key to attracting a variety of species 

to your feeders is to offer a diversity of food 

types. Mixed seed, Black-oil Sunflower seed, 

suet, raisons, and shelled peanuts are all relished. 

Don’t forget the water. In winter, birds 

still need to drink and bathe. A shallow tray 

of water will attract birds even when feeders 

do not. Robins are compulsive bathers, and 

they winter here by the thousands, feasting on 

holly berries. The raspberry headed birds at 

your thistle feeder are probably House Finch. 

Goldfinch, too relish thistle but don’t expect 

brightly plumaged birds, in winter the state 

bird is in drabber plumage.

If laughter is the best medicine, Netflix is 

the biggest drug dealer! Stand-up comedy 

shows seem to be the streaming 

giant’s staple. Over the years, they have 

released dozens of hour-long shows. 

Some of the names are household names like 

Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle, some I’ve 

never heard of. But the world must need a 

good laugh, because these shows are getting 

a lot of views. 

There are two standup specials in the top 

10 most popular on Netflix this week. One is 

from a guy I don’t know: Mike Birbiglia. He 

has this whole bit about how his dad had a 

heart attack at 56 and so did his grandfather. 

He says, “I’ve always thought I should set 

aside that whole year…” funny. One of the 

comedians I do know, Matt Rife, I’ve always 

liked. Now, he’s become a cancel target. 

Don’t know Rife? That’s not too surprising. 

He’s a TikTok superstar. Oh, wait… don’t 

think I’m hip because I know trendy TikTok 

influencers. If it wasn’t for my wife scrolling 

through her phone, I’d be lost. Rife self-produced 

his own specials on YouTube to get 

tens of millions of views. Impressive. And 

as a YouTuber myself with tens of… well… 

ten views, you’d think that impresses me the 

most. But it’s not. 

Ever see a comedian striking back at a 

heckler? Pretty hilarious. Best comeback: 

Steve Martin on his comedy album A Wild 

and Crazy Guy (1978). Yeah, growing up all 

I bought was comedy albums (sort of my 

Netflix). On this album, someone tries to 

heckle Martin, and he says, “Yeah, I remember 

when I had my first beer.” The crowd ate it up. 

Fast forward to the 2020s. On his TikTok 

videos, Rife has an uncanny ability to find 

people in the audience and heckle them! He 

really rips into people when they answer 

his questions. It’s brilliant. He rips in pretty 

hard… but never too far. 

Critics think he’s gone too far on Netflix. 

He jokes about domestic violence and other 

taboo issues. But are there any taboo issues 

in comedy? Many in the cancel culture are 

calling for his head. Somehow, I’ve always 

thought that makes a comedian even more 

in demand. Check out his videos on YouTube 

first. On Netflix, I was disappointed he never 

interacted with the audience (clearly his 

strong suit), so I wasn’t overly impressed. But 

is it cancellation time? You be the judge.

Since they began almost 50 years 

ago, the house tours offered by Cape 

May MAC have joined the ranks of 

beloved Christmas traditions, along 

with things like seeing the Nutcracker 

and visiting Santa. Couples who first joined 

the tours decades ago now return with their 

children, or grandchildren, to soak up the 

Victorian holiday atmosphere. 

Like many beloved traditions, the house 

tours require a little more effort than many 

of us remember. Expect lines — on your tour, 

at the restaurant later on, in the stores, and in 

the parking lots. There may be some confusion. 

Bring your patience — remember that 

it’s crowded because it’s a great place to be! 

To make the most of your visit, start with the 

Cape May MAC website (capemaymac.org), 

click on “Learn More” under the “Christmas 

Candlelight House Tours,” and watch their 

“Tips for a successful tour” video. It offers 

useful information, like “bring a flashlight,” 

and reminds us that this is a HUGE event, 

drawing tourists aplenty. Knowing where to 

attach your wristband, planning your route 

and accepting that it’s nearly impossible to 

see all of the houses makes things more fun 

for everyone. Even the etiquette reminders 

like “don’t bring food or drink” and “don’t take 

pictures without permission” are useful, as is 

the reminder to reservations in advance. 

Many of the tours are similar, so double 

check your dates and times. Each will 

give you a delightful dose of Christmas spirit. 

The Physick Family Christmas House Tour 

($20 adult, $15 child) is a one-location tour, 

presenting the 1879 estate “through the 

eyes of a family member in the 1900s.” The 

Christmas Candlelight House Tour ($45 per 

adult, $30 per child) is primarily a walking 

tour, so wear comfortable shoes and dress 

in layers — and do bring that flashlight to 

make walking on these charming sidewalks 

easier. The Holiday Inn Tour ($25/$15) is like 

a smaller, daytime version of the Candlelight 

Tour. The Lamplighter Tour ($35/$25) runs 

through December 28 and includes the Old- 

Fashioned Christmas Exhibit at the Carroll 

Gallery, where you can drop a letter to Santa. 

You can also choose one of MAC’s trolley 

tours, which can feature Mrs. Claus, a friendly 

ghost or two, or the hottest Cape May gossip 

from a century ago. You may encounter a singalong 

of Christmas carols, and if you dislike 

singalongs, just let it go and remember that 

festive vibes take many forms. If you can’t get 

to Cape May this December, check out the 

videos on the website.

I’m dreading our annual family Christmas 

gathering. Every year my grandfather waits 

until we are halfway through dinner and 

having a great time to drop some inappropriate 

bombshell. It is always about some political 

situation or topic which is either racist or 

chauvinistic. I don’t even think he believes 

that crap. My mother gets upset and I feel like 

a hypocrite staying silent. We let him rant and 

then clear the table for dessert, but it puts a real 

damper on our great time. Is there anything I 

can do to stand up for my beliefs without it 

turning into a war? — Had Enough

Naturally, you and your family look at 

him as grandpa. Instead, think of him as a 

narcissist who can’t stand it if the light isn’t 

shining on him. He loves to hold court, so let 

him, but control it and snatch the limelight 

away from him. When he says something 

out of order, ask why he feels that way. Ask 

him what led him to think that. Then bring 

other family members into the conversation 

by focusing not on his opinion but the 

circumstances that led to it. Make it a history 

lesson which involves every generation. Then 

hand him a jar of honey from Cape May Honey 

Farm to sweeten the conversation.

BLAZE is a handsome boy who came to the 

shelter when his owner died and is a bit anxious 

over the turn his life has taken. He does 

require some basic training for leash walking 

and certain cue but is very treat motivated. A 

home that understands his anxiety and is willing 

to work with him will allow him to grow 

into a fine companion. 

ROCKY AND CHUBBS came to the shelter 

recently after their owner suddenly passed 

away. These two depend on each other and 

must be adopted together. Rocky is an eightyear-old 

purebred Jack Russel and Chubbs is a 

13-year-old mix Jack Russel. They are in great 

health and were very well cared for so a new 

loving home will suit them well. 

COCO came to the shelter as a stray and 

needs a home that will provide a healthy diet 

and plenty of exercise. She is a large German 

Shepherd who loves to run around the yard 

and playing with both humans and other dogs. 

Coco will be a wonderful family companion in 

a home that will continue her training and give 

her continuity.
