Hamra Abbas developed <strong>the</strong> concept “Every Color<br />

is a Shade of Black” over several years, start<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

‘Kaaba Picture as a Mispr<strong>in</strong>t’ (2014). Us<strong>in</strong>g cyan, magenta,<br />

and yellow (CMYK) to symbolize <strong>the</strong> Kaaba’s<br />

identity, she concluded that every color is a shade of<br />

black. This framework connects her work, explor<strong>in</strong>g<br />

color about faith, ideology, race, identity, desire, beauty,<br />

gender, and personal relationships. Abbas, tra<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

<strong>in</strong> sculpture and m<strong>in</strong>iature pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g, resides between<br />

Boston and Islamabad. Her work has been exhibited<br />

globally, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> Victoria and Albert Museum<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Asia Society Triennial.<br />

“Sheher, Prakriti, Devi” is a groundbreak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

exhibition curated by artist and<br />

photographer Gauri Gill. Expand<strong>in</strong>g on her<br />

“Rememory” series, <strong>the</strong> show explores <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>terconnectedness of dynamic cities, nature,<br />

and spirituality. Featur<strong>in</strong>g twelve artists<br />

and collectives, <strong>the</strong> exhibition transcends diverse<br />

contexts, reveal<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> porous nature<br />

of urban and rural spaces. Gill <strong>in</strong>vites viewers<br />

to perceive ecology as a convergence<br />

of cultural, natural, and spiritual realms. The<br />

curated works, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g pieces by Chamba<br />

Rumal, Chiara Camoni, and o<strong>the</strong>rs,<br />

showcase <strong>the</strong> beauty and truths found <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> mundane to <strong>the</strong> transcendental. Gill acknowledges<br />

artists who persist outside traditional<br />

art networks, foster<strong>in</strong>g a dialogue on<br />

dualistic worlds—depleted and regenerative,<br />

colonial and Indigenous, mundane and<br />

magical. The exhibition, supported by ZEISS<br />

and J. Safra Saras<strong>in</strong> (Middle East) Ltd., is a<br />

unique celebration of diverse voices <strong>in</strong> art.<br />
