From young love to growing old disgracefully ...
we’ve rounded up some fabulous reads for the Easter weekend
Heather Winterbottom has worked
alongside her husband in their rural
GP practise for 40 years. They’ve
just hung up their stethoscopes ...
but their retirement isn’t all they
thought it would be. She wants to
travel to a Greek island. He wants
to grow a veggie garden. Neither
will compromise ... so he stays with
his spinach, parsnips and pumpkin,
The Williamson sisters, Josephine and
Penny, are Britain's most treasured World
War II veterans. Now in their nineties, they’re
still in great form, and are in hot demand,
appearing at commemorative events all
over the country. The latest excitement is a
trip to Paris to receive the Légion d'honneur,
accompanied by their devoted greatnephew,
who believes the pair had minor
roles in the Women's Royal Navy and the
First Aid Nursing Yeomanry. But that's only
half the story. There's a reason sweet Auntie
Penny can dispatch a would-be mugger
with a brolly. This trip to Paris is not what it
seems either. Scandal and crime have trailed
the sisters since the war. Now armed with
new information about an old adversary,
these much decorated (but admittedly
ancient) veterans intend to settle scores,
avenge lost friends, and pull off one last
heist. All hidden official secrets and double
lives, CJ Wray’s The Excitements is a funny,
charming, thrilling adventure read. Orion
There are 18 plants and
how many degrees he
had*, he said it would be
thing that would improve
his quality of life would
be ‘good, workable knees’.
Little Kickers, the world’s largest
preschool football academy, continues
to make waves in Johannesburg
South under the guidance of Monique
Piderit, a registered dietitian turned
entrepreneur, and her husband Jarrod,
an executive at a multinational FMCG
company.
Jarrod’s recent completion of his MBA,
coupled with his experience running
business units of billions of rands, places
him in the perfect position to guide,
direct, and steer the direction of the
business for growth. Having learnt the
vital skill of self-promotion and marketing
in her own practice, Monique heads
up the marketing of Little Kickers.
Together, since January 2023, the Piderits
have spearheaded the growth of
the Little Kickers branch, witnessing a
remarkable increase from 190 to nearly
300 children last year alone.
We talked to registered dietitian
and owner Monique Piderit about
Little Kickers.
Fostering love for football and sport
The essence of Little Kickers lies in its
philosophy of ‘Play not Push’, focusing
on fostering a love for football and
sport in children aged 18 months to
eight years old.
With a network spanning 32 countries
and over 2 250 coaches, Little Kickers
emphasises a pressure-free environment
where children can develop
not only football skills, but also crucial
life skills.
Monique’s journey with Little Kickers
began as a parent, enrolling her own
children in the programme.
Witnessing the positive impact on their
confidence and recognising the value
of introducing a healthy lifestyle at a
young age, she was inspired to take on
a more active role.
‘When the opportunity arose to acquire
the business, we jumped at the chance,
drawn to the unique blend of sport
and early childhood development
offered by Little Kickers,’ says Monique.
Little Kickers’ classes in Johannesburg
South cater to different age groups,
offering tailored experiences that
promote maximum engagement and
interaction.
From Little Kicks for toddlers to Mega
Kickers for older children, each class
focuses on skills development while
maintaining an atmosphere of fun
and play.
Little Kickers:
Fostering football fun
With Monique and Jarrod Piderit at the helm, Little
Kickers in Johannesburg South continues to enrich the
lives of children, offering not just football fun but also
valuable lessons that extend far beyond the pitch
Monique and Jarrod’s involvement in Little Kickers reflects their commitment to
promoting holistic child development.
As a registered dietitian and mother of two, Monique understands the importance
of instilling healthy habits. As for Jarrod, an avid sportsman throughout his school
career, fostering a positive attitude towards physical activity from an early age is a
key principle that he drives in his young boys.
Benefits for little ones
‘We focus on ‘fun first’ and our international programmes, developed by experts
in childhood development like sports scientists, OTs, physios, and teachers deliver
high-quality football skills, combined with important preschool learning concepts
like colour and number recognition, sharing, following instructions and using
the imagination.’
For parents seeking engaging and developmental activities for their children, Little
Kickers stands out for several reasons.
‘It promotes physical health and fitness through activities that enhance cardiovascular
endurance, muscle strength, coordination and agility.’
Additionally, it fosters social development by providing opportunities for teamwork,
communication, and sportsmanship, while also contributing to children’s
psychological well-being by boosting confidence and resilience.
Quarterly badge certifications highlight the key skills children acquire, further motivating
and engaging them in the process.
Through anecdotes and observations shared by parents and participants, the positive
impact of Little Kickers becomes evident.
‘Children benefit from improved physical development, enhanced social skills,
increased confidence, better emotional regulation, and cognitive stimulation.
This and that
As entrepreneurs, the Piderits embody the spirit of community and passion for
healthy living.
Monique was born and bred in the south of Johannesburg and her upbringing in a
Portuguese household laid the foundation for her career path.
Surrounded by the aromas and flavours of home-cooked meals, she developed a
deep appreciation for the value of good nutrition.
Armed with a PhD in Dietetics from the University of Pretoria, Monique is on a
mission to educate people about healthy eating habits.
Her commitment to nutritional advocacy extends beyond her professional
endeavours, as she seamlessly balances her roles as a dietitian, business owner,
and mother. She has been married to her husband, Jarrod since 2016 and cherishes
her family life, raising two young boys, Joshua and Daniel, while pursuing her
career ambitions.
Despite the demands of full-time practice and running Little Kickers, she finds
solace in her hobbies.
From watching action-packed movies to diving into non-fiction books, her diverse
interests reflect her multifaceted personality and unwavering dedication to personal
and professional growth.
Be centred with
Yoga-Nastics
Step into the vibrant world of Keeta Partridge, a 34-year-old former foundation phase
teacher, Yoga-Nastics teacher, Pilates instructor, and aspiring cognitive behavioural life
coach from Brackenhurst. Keeta’s journey is one of passion, discipline, and a relentless
pursuit of personal growth.
In a world where children face numerous
challenges, Keeta Partridge has
taken it upon herself to equip them
with the tools needed to overcome
life’s obstacles. Through her innovative
movement-based programme,
Yoga-Nastics, Keeta is empowering
children to harness the power of
their breath while strengthening
their minds and bodies. With a deep
passion for inspiring self-confidence
and resilience, Keeta has been running
Yoga-Nastics for about two years,
making a meaningful impact on children’s
lives.
A passion like no other
Yoga-Nastics not only focuses on
physical development but also nurtures
children’s mental well-being. By
engaging in this unique programme,
children experience a range of benefits,
including improved concentration,
enhanced memory, increased strength
and flexibility, heightened self-awareness,
improved self-control, and a
boost in self-esteem.
Through a combination of movement,
songs, breathing techniques, storytelling,
sensory play, crafts, emotional
regulation, and mindfulness, Keeta
creates a holistic and child-friendly
environment.
One of the most rewarding aspects of
Keeta’s work is witnessing the growth
of children’s self-confidence. Seeing
can pose challenges. Educating people
about the concept and gaining
their openness and understanding
has been her most significant hurdle.
Despite this, Keeta remains dedicated
to her mission, striving to spread the
transformative power of Yoga-Nastics
far and wide.
Witnessing a
child’s face light up
when they accomplish
a challenging
pose reaffirms the
significance of
my work
Breathing techniques, such as the
bumble bee breath, teach children
how to regulate their breath and find
inner calmness. Emotional regulation
is consistently emphasised throughout
the classes, helping children identify
their emotions, understand their bodily
sensations, and learn strategies for
managing strong emotions. Sensory
play and crafts promote mindfulness
and help children focus their attention
on the present moment.
Working with children between the
ages of 4 and 12, Keeta finds this age
group to be the most receptive to
new experiences and the ones who
benefit the most from the concepts
presented. While Yoga-Nastics can
benefit children of all ages, she particularly
enjoys working with this age
group.
Drawing from her educational background,
which includes a B.Ed. in the
Foundation Phase and an Honours
in School Guidance and Counselling,
Keeta highlights that Yoga-Nastics
complements traditional schooling by
addressing crucial aspects of children’s
mental health.
One of the most significant transformations
she witnesses in her students
is their willingness to persist and
improve, even in areas where they
initially struggle. This invaluable life lesson, not giving up on oneself, instills resilience
and humility in children who may otherwise feel pressured to be perfect.
‘By creating an environment where rules are understood, and children feel loved
and accepted, I set high expectations for my students, encouraging them to
always try their best regardless of the situation.’
More than just Yoga-Nastics
For Keeta, success is not defined by a single story or moment. Instead, it is the
collective growth and increased self-confidence she observes in her students
that fuel her passion. Hearing children express their love for attending Yoga-Nastics
or receiving feedback from parents about their child’s ability to utilise the
techniques during overwhelming moments brings her immense joy.
‘Witnessing a child’s face light up when they accomplish a challenging pose
reaffirms the significance of my work,’ she says.
Keeta’s vision extends beyond individual classes; she aspires to introduce the
programme to as many schools as possible, ensuring that every child can benefit
from its life-enriching principles. Additionally, Keeta plans to conduct workshops
for parents and teachers, sharing valuable insights and practical ideas for incorporating
Yoga-Nastics into classrooms and homes.
The benefits of Yoga-Nastics are vast and encompass improved focus, concentration,
and self-awareness, as well as support for children with ADHD, autism, and
weak fine and gross motor skills. Furthermore, the programme strengthens core
muscles, vital for proper sitting in class, enhances children’s ability to self-soothe,
and boosts self-confidence.
Keeta and her Yoga-Nastics programme stand as a beacon of hope, empowering
children to become their own superheroes. By imparting essential life skills and
fostering resilience, she is shaping the future generation to be confident, wellequipped
individuals capable of overcoming any challenge that comes their way.
To enroll your children in Yoga-Nastics, parents can contact Keeta via WhatsApp
at 082 356 7572 or email her at yoganasticsza@gmail.com.
She offers a free trial class, providing an opportunity for everyone to experience
the transformative power of Yoga-Nastics.
This and that
She was born and raised in Johannesburg South and has called Brackenhurst
her home for most of her life. Growing up alongside her older brother, who is
now a motor mechanic, she developed a strong bond and cherished their close
relationship.
Reminiscing about her childhood, Keeta’s fondest memory is her time spent at
gymnastics. It was a place where she felt a sense of belonging and joy, shaping
her love for movement and physical activity.
Today, Keeta resides in the same house she has called home for the past 25 years,
living with her mother and brother. Her educational journey led her through Kenton
Primary and Bracken High School, setting the stage for her future endeavors.
After matriculating, she embarked on a path to become a teacher through Unisa.
Working as a student teacher, she gained practical experience while pursuing her
four-year degree. Keeta’s passion for teaching soon extended beyond traditional
academics, leading her to explore the world of Pilates and Yoga-Nastics.
Currently single, her daily life is a dynamic mix of teaching Pilates and Yoga-Nastics
classes, delving into studies to become a cognitive behavioural life coach,
and maintaining an active social media presence.
Embracing variety, she finds joy in knitting, practicing yoga, working out, and
taking care of her 12 beloved pets, showering them with love and affection.
Beyond her active pursuits, Keeta is an avid MotoGP and F1 enthusiast, indulging
in the exhilaration of high-speed racing. Her passions extend to reading, gardening,
and nurturing her collection of house plants, constantly striving to keep
them thriving.
‘I draw inspiration from observing others who are passionate about their craft, be
it artists, musicians, or creative individuals. Their dedication fuels my own desires
to infuse creativity into every aspect of my life.’
If she could change anything about the world, Keeta dreams of a society where
individuals find contentment in who they are while continuously pursuing their
fullest potential.
Story time for babes and toddlers
How much does Mum love her little Rae? More than
seal pups and penguins love their icy home. More than
dolphins love the boundless sea or lions love to race and
roar. Even more than all the stars, the moon and the sun
Get your tot talking
At what age do kids start talking? The short answer ... when
they’re ready. So says Childhood & Special Education expert
Nicole Mackiewicz. Their communication skills, she says, will
begin with smiles, giggles, claps and babbles before any words
make it out. But while you wait for your tot to say full words,
sentences and more, use these tips to help promote their
language development right now.
Once your child starts learning a few words, the talking
train can really pick up steam. They’ll go from babbling to
pointing at and naming things. Between 18 and 24 months
they may encounter a word spurt, increasing their vocabulary
dramatically. By age two, kids can typically string two words
together ... “mama car”.
Tips on how to get tots talking ...
Start story time early They might not understand everything
right away, but reading introduces your baby to the flow of
language. Point to and identify the pictures in the book - If
there are animals, make each animal’s noise. The illustration and
exciting sounds will keep your kid engaged and having fun.
Sing, rhyme & even dance Music is a great way to introduce
your baby to words. Babies love simple rhymes and sing-along
songs while repetition reinforces key words or phrases. Music
also introduces them to fun physical movement ... let the music
lead to a family dance party.
Play with toys that bring their world down to size Toys that
resemble familiar objects and places - like animal & people
figures and playsets - help children identify real-world concepts
up close and encourage pretend play. The First Words Puppy
and First Worlds Sis are ideal here as they also provide learning
across three stages of development for your child.
Narrate & label anything, everywhere Talk and identify
items through your everyday tasks ... “Time to get into
Mommy’s car”, and “Time to get dressed, let’s get your blue
pants on.” If they can touch it, see it and hear it, especially
repeatedly, they are making that connection between words,
concepts and objects.
Praise your little talker Positive reinforcement is key. Let your
little one know they are on the right track by keeping the
praise and encouragement coming when they identify objects
and use words correctly.
Keep some banter going Show them how to carry a
conversation by asking them questions, waiting for them
to answer and responding to their babbles or one-word
statements. Continue chatting about whatever they seem
interested in. For example, if they point at someone, say,
“There’s a person, wave hello!”.
Why isn’t my baby talking yet? So your mini-me is taking their
sweet time getting out those first words. I know, it can seem
concerning, but remember that each child is unique and will
develop their communication skills on a timeline that’s right
for them. Even if they’re not speaking, they’re still listening
and soaking up speech patterns from what they hear spoken
around them. They’re also likely learning nonverbal forms of
communication like staring at, reaching for, and pointing at
desired objects. And, they’ll start to understand you before
they’re able to answer you with their words.
Easy, healthy lunch boxes get 10 out of 10!
Let’s be honest. Packing a nutritious, appealing lunch box isn’t
easy. Time constraints, cost concerns ... all hurdles that busy
parents must grapple with. What goes into the lunch box, and
what gets eaten during the school day are really important.
Lunch, snacks and hydration make a significant impact on our
kids’ energy levels and their abilities to concentrate and perform,
both cognitively and physically throughout the school day.
Juicy Delicious and Rediscover Dairy have teamed up to provide
inspiration and dietitian advice to make mastering school lunch
boxes much easier.
An important feature of school lunch boxes is the inclusion
of vegetables and fruits every day. Luckily it is still stone fruit
season ... firm, juicy yellow cling peaches, succulent plums and
deliciously sweet nectarines are all excellent lunch box fruits
because they travel well as whole fruits. They are refreshing
on a hot school day, packed with fibre and immune-boosting
vitamins C and A, and loved by children as much as any
sweet treat.
Maretha Vermaak, the registered dietitian at Rediscover Dairy tell
us when it comes to nutritional balance, parents need to ensure
that school lunch box foods are contributing to their child’s
needs for protein, energy, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals.
And this is where dairy shines. Luckily, kids love dairy, so it is an
ideal solution for picky eaters. Milk, cheese, maas and yoghurt
offer a unique nutritional spectrum as well as being a vital
source of vitamins such as A, B2, and B12, as well as potassium
and zinc.
And if you combine the two ... stone fruit with dairy - think a
fresh peach milkshake or nectarine yoghurt smoothie - you have
the ideal, nutrient-dense drink on-the-go.
Here are half a dozen tips to master lunch box prep:
Plan ahead Include lunch box prep in your weekly meal
planning and shopping. Create a weekly list to focus on buying
a variety of healthy, fresh lunch box foods. If you limit biscuits,
sweets and crisps stored in your grocery cupboards then there’s
less chance they will end up in the lunch box.
Involve your kids Consider your child’s food preferences and
include them in the lunch box preparation process. Make it a
fun and interactive experience.
Daily dairy You need to aim to include at least two to three
servings of dairy in your child’s daily diet. Luckily there are many
ways to include milk, cheese, yoghurt and maas in the school
lunch box. You can freeze a small yoghurt or fruit juice to keep
the lunch box cold.
Always include fruits and vegetables Each day prioritise
fresh fruits and vegetables, based on what is seasonally
available, which helps to meet daily energy, fibre, vitamin and
mineral needs.
Avoid unhealthy foods Steer clear of fried, sugary, and high-salt
foods to promote overall health and cultivate healthy eating
choices from an early age.
Choose healthy beverages - Include low-calorie, healthy,
nutrient-rich beverages like milk or water instead of fizzy drinks
and sugary cordials.
Egg on toast
Toast. Bread. Baguette. Eggs come to the party every which way
... from a padkos sandwich to a fancy brekkie bruschette.
Egg open sandwiches
If you’re looking for a quick, tasty and impressive open sandwich,
eggs make the perfect topping. Make the basic recipe, and then go
wild with additional fillings and garnishes. This makes enough for
three people (or six if you have one slice each).
You’ll need: 6 eggs ... 2 hard boiled, shelled and sliced thinly, 2 hard
boiled and mashed with a little mayo, and 2 hard boiled and
mashed with a little mayo and curry paste; 6 slices bread of your
choice (white/whole-wheat/seeded/rye); 3 to 4 Tbsp butter, room
temperature; soft lettuce leaves, such as butter lettuce, washed and
patted dry.
For the toppings: Pickled red onions, pickled gherkins, radish slices,
beetroot, grated or slices, crispy fried onion, rocket leaves, washed
and dried.
Other optional toppings: carrot ribbons, smoked paprika, thinly sliced
tomatoes, cucumber slices, Japanese mayo, Mustard butter
To make: Butter each slice of bread and place a leaf of lettuce on top.
Top first with a hearty egg filling (use the different egg fillings for
each), and then garnish with your selection of garnishes.
Tip: Open sandwiches are a good way to use up leftovers. Chop
leftover cold meat with a little mayo, and top with sliced egg and
other toppings.
Garnishes can be prepared in advance and stored until you are ready
to assemble the sandwiches. Use the above suggestions in any kind
of combinations and, if you have leftover garnishes, they can go into
a salad to serve alongside the sandwich.
The ultimate egg salad sandwich
What’s a road trip without an egg sandwich.
A sad road trip indeed. This egg salad makes
a delicious filling for rolls, baguettes or health
bread and is perfect for lunch boxes and road
trips, as it keeps well in a sealed container in the
fridge for two to three days. Serves six.
You’ll need: 6 hard-boiled eggs, peeled; 1/3 cup
mayonnaise; 2 tsp whole grain mustard; 1 tsp
fresh lemon juice; 1/2 stalk celery, very finely
chopped; 2 Tbsp finely chopped chives; salt
and pepper to taste; paprika to sprinkle; sliced
health bread or baguette, to serve; fresh chives
to garnish
To make: Roughly chop all (or only four if you
want some whole eggs for presentation) hardboiled
eggs and transfer to a medium bowl. Mash
slightly with a fork to break up yolks.
Add mayonnaise, mustard, lemon juice, celery
and chives and mix until evenly combined.
Season with salt and pepper.
If using a baguette, slice in half lengthwise.
Spread the egg salad on the bottom half of your
bagette or health bread, sprinkle with paprika
and a few chopped chives and top with the other
half of the baguette or slice of bread.
Croque Madame
The ooh la la version of a toastie with
fried egg! Serves two.
You’ll need: For the cheese sauce 1 Tbsp
butter; 1 Tbsp flour; 2/3 cup milk;
pinch salt and freshly ground black
pepper; pinch of ground nutmeg;
about ¼ cup grated mature cheddar
or Gruyère cheese.
For the Croque-Madame 4 slices thick
sour dough or country loaf; 2 Tbsp
softened butter; 2 Tbsp whole grain
Dijon mustard; 1/2 cup cheese sauce
(as above); 6 thin slices ham; about
1 cup) grated mature cheddar or
Gruyère cheese, divided.
For the eggs 1 Tbsp butter; 2 large
eggs; salt, for sprinkling; freshly
ground black pepper.
To make: Preheat oven to 180°C.
Start by making a cheese sauce. In a
small saucepan over medium heat,
melt butter. Add flour and stir for
about one minute. Gradually whisk
in milk and add salt, pepper and
nutmeg. Bring to a simmer, whisking
constantly and cook until sauce
thickens, about two minutes. Remove
from heat and stir in the cheese.
Allow to cool for 10 minutes.
To assemble the Croque-Madame’s:
lightly toast the bread. Spread with
softened butter on each slice, then
flip over two slices and spread each
with 1 tsp mustard and 1 Tbsp
cheese sauce. Top each slice with 3
slices ham, ¼ cup cheese and the
remaining bread slices. Spread the
tops of each sandwich with 2 Tbsp
sauce and sprinkle with the grated
cheese.
Place sandwiches on a baking tray
and bake until cheese is melted
and golden brown on top, about
15 to 18 minutes.
For the eggs, melt the butter in
a frying pan over medium-high
heat. Crack in the eggs and fry until
whites are set, about 3 minutes.
Season with salt and pepper and
top each sandwich with an egg.
Serve immediately.
Bruschetta
Egg on toast. But the fancy version. Serves four.
You’ll need: 2 Tbsp olive oil; 400-500g rump steak; 2 whole garlic cloves, crushed;
5 thyme sprigs, stripped; 1 Tbsp butter; 500ml boiling water; 8 eggs; 1 Tbsp
white vinegar; 8 slices thick French or Ciabatta bread; 2 medium avocados;
10g wild rocket
For the dressing ½ cup plain yogurt; ¼ cup olive oil; ¼ cup smooth Dijon mustard;
3 – 4 Tbsp honey, to taste; 2 Tbsp lemon juice; 2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar or
lemon juice; 1 tsp crushed garlic; salt and freshly ground black pepper
To make: In a large saucepan on medium to high heat, add cooking oil and
coat the pan well. Place the rump steak in the pan, crushed garlic cloves, thyme
and butter. Cook evenly for two to three minutes on each side, keep it a little
bit longer on the fatty side to get a nice crisp and set aside to let it rest. Do not
slice yet.
For the poached eggs, pour the 500ml boiling water and vinegar into a small
saucepan and bring to a simmer. Once the water starts boiling, reduce the
heat to low. Crack open the eggs one at a time into separate ramekins or egg
poaching cups. Drop the poaching cups into the water. For a firm white and
runny yolk, you’ll want to poach for three to four minutes. Remove with a slotted
spoon once done to your liking and set aside.
For the dressing, place all the dressing ingredients into a 500ml glass jar
and whisk or shake well until well blended. Add more honey if you prefer a
sweeter dressing.
To assemble, toast the bread slices, top with avocado slices, wild rocket, steak
slithers, poached egg and finish off with creamy dressing.
Perk up the patio, harvest herbs and
Indoor plant of the month
It’s time to take tuberous begonias indoors for
some long lasting indoor winter flowers. The
large blooms with their frilled petals come in
such a huge range of colours that it is almost
impossible not to find a colour that will either stand
out or tone in with your home’s colour scheme.
Being compact, they just need to be popped into a
decorative pot as a table top or coffee table feature.
Make sure they receive good light in a bright room,
but not direct sunlight. Water directly onto the soil, keeping
the leaves dry. Keep the soil lightly moist, but not soggy otherwise the
roots will rot. Details: www.lvgplant.co.za
We’re planting …Geranium Marcada
Magenta to perk up the patio for
winter. It’s a hardy geranium that flowers
effortlessly and will cascade over the
edge of hanging baskets and pots. It
loves autumn’s cooler temperatures and
is an easy plant for hanging baskets and
containers because it likes to be kept drier
than most other geraniums. The best is
to water it once the soil has dried out
slightly. A drench of liquid fertiliser once
a month will keep it looking good and
flowering well. Don’t hang your basket
too high, rather have it at shoulder level
for easy care and to appreciate all its
flowers. A position that receives morning
sun and afternoon shade is ideal.
Look what we found for the little gardeners ... MyEcoSprout Mixed Loose Leaf
Lettuce. Inside, you will find an A6 coloring-in card, 20 mixed loose-leaf lettuce
seeds and the collectable seed chart for R38. Details: myecosprout.com
Veggie of the month
Want to grow your own lettuce? This
is the month to start sowing this
cool season salad veggie. Loose-leaf
lettuce is the easiest to grow and the
quickest to harvest. Why not plant a
mix of red and green-leaved lettuce
like Red Sails (RAW seed) which has
bright red tips, shading into light
maroon and deepening into green
toward the base. The leaves are soft
and have a buttery flavour. It can be
picked at baby- leaf stage, as larger
individual leaves or as a full-size
lettuce.
Sow into seedling trays because the
seed is very fine and easy to waste
if sown in situ. Once the seedlings
are big enough to handle (about
10cm high) they can be transplanted,
spaced 30cm apart.
All lettuce needs is full sun, fertile soil,
and watering at least once or twice a
week because it has shallow roots that
dry out quickly. Protect plants from
the cold (even mild frost) with frost
cloth. Details: www.rawliving.co.za
Garden tasks for March
• Plant autumn flowering perennials
like rudbeckia, gaillardia, asters,
argyranthemum, and osteospermum.
• Towards the end of March
sow colourful winter flowering
Namaqualand daisies, calendula,
Iceland poppies and Shirley poppies.
For fragrance there are sweet peas,
Virginian stocks, alyssum and nemesia.
• Divide perennials like agapanthus,
arum lilies, summer flowering red hot
pokers and day lilies that have become
too crowded. Prepare the soil well, with
lots of compost, before replanting.
• To keep your lawn green during
winter (in frost free areas), fertilise this
month with 5:1:5 and water regularly.
• Start harvesting and preserving
your herbs for winter. Aromatic herbs
like oregano, marjoram, thyme, sage,
bay, and rosemary dry well and keep
their flavour.
• Water once a week and give the
garden a last application of 5:1:5
fertilizer to keep the garden going
through winter. Water well after
applying the fertilizer.
Visit ... Paternoster
A trip down to the Cape
West Coast is a real treat
... even more so when
it includes a few days‘
stop-over in Paternoster.
One of the oldest fishing
villages on the West Coast,
it’s all white-washed
fisherman’s cottages and
massive boulders, lobsters
and mussels, jagged cliffs
and gorgeous beaches.
Stay ...
Paternoster is awash with self-catering and guest house accommodation ... our
preference goes hands down to the Gonana Collection. There’s a guesthouse, two
fully-furnished, self-catering houses and an exclusive three-roomed Villa, all part of
the Cape Country Routes collection. And they’ve recently added three self-catering
studios ... the Scallop, Oyster and Mussel studios.
As with the original guesthouse, Paternoster’s first sustainable and environmentally
conscious guesthouse and brainchild of Swedish entrepreneur and interior designer
Jonas Sandström, the trio of studios are rich in detail, exquisite in taste, and above all
else, considerate to the environment. So you’ll be living off-the-grid, with solar panels
providing sustainable energy.
With an Afro-Scandi vibe, the studios have been beautifully thought out, and are
wonderfully comfortable. With one queen bed and sleeper couch, each comfortably
sleeps three - and a pet, since four-legged friends are welcome! The beds are extra
length, with high-quality, 100 per cent organic bedding and pillows, and there’s a
neat compact bathroom with shower.
For those who want to eat in, there’s a fully fitted kitchenette with a gas hob and
all the utensils you could possibly need, and a small dining room table. The studios
have a welcome fruit basket (so appreciated ... we always arrive starving!) and are fully
serviced (no time for making beds on holiday).
There are also two private terraces ... one fully enclosed out back, another at the
front with a braai, both with dining tables and chairs. The studios, set just one road
back and about 50 metres from the beach, overlook the small, secluded indigenous
garden. For lazy afternoons, there are recliners for relaxed sunbathing and there are
private, outdoor showers. If you visit in Winter, make sure you try the Kolkol – a South
African made, four-seater spa bath-type tub heated by wood fire, hidden in the
garden between the fynbos.
The only thing you won’t find is a television ... thank heaven, since this is a spot to
relax, unwind, snooze, read, chat, explore. Just lovely!
Play ...
Loads of activities in and around the village ... hikes and
cycling tracks through the Columbine Reserve, horse
riding on the beach, and scenic kayaking trips ... spot
the dolphins, seals, penguins and, in winter, whales. The
greatest fun of all is the WoweBikes tour. It’s brilliant for
the whole family, and you don’t have to be particularly
fit, either ... we had one seasoned, ultra-fit mountain bike
rider in our party, and then the complete opposite ... unfit,
hadn’t been on a bike for 50 years, and no balance or
co-ords at all. A three minute (wobbly) test around the car
park, then off to the beach for an hour-and-a-half coast
line ride. Massively enjoyable, and easy peasy ... particularly
once the not-a-bike-rider discovered the accelerator
button, and raced along, passing all! There’s the beach
option and a Cape Columbine tour, which meanders
through the nature reserve, past Tieties Bay (depending
on who you chat to, named after a well-known fisherman
Jacob Titus, who drowned there, or from the massive
smooth round boulders on the beach and in the sea) and
up to the lighthouse (built in 1936, it’s perched on Castle
Rock, and is open for visitors to climb ... views from the top
take in the whole of the village).
Eat ...
Paternoster is home to some sensational restaurants
- including Wolfgat (a tiny spot that boasts being
awarded Restaurant of the Year at the World Restaurant
Awards in Paris in 2019), Voorstrandt (sitting right on the
beach in an historic red and green house), De See Kat
(on the water’s edge ... build your own seafood platter
... brilliant) and the incredible, can’t-miss-it Leeto at The
Strandlooper (amazing chilled views over the beach
and ocean, first class service and fine, fine dining ... the
Spring Risotto’s worth travelling for). For a hippy vibe,
hit the Noisy Oyster, where there’s a fun, flirty menu in
a bright arty garden setting; for those travelling with
children, The Waffle Wharf is tremendous ... breakfast
waffles, savoury versions and dozens and dozens of
sweet, sweet options too.
For guests at the studio who don’t want to make
breakfast, you can select to have breakfast at the
guesthouse, a short walk away.
Info ...
Rates for Oyster studio from R1950 per couple
per night, R300 for children 1 to 18. Breakfasts at
Outdoor child!
Looking for a way to disconnect, ditch
the screens and spend time with the
family? Fortunately we are spoiled for
options, and camping in and around
our beautiful country should be top
of your wanderlust list, especially
with the family. However, the most
important thing is to be organised
and prepared, and of course have the
right gear to make things efficient,
easy and stress-free.
We chatted to Jamie Owen, marketing
manager for Thule SA, outdoor
enthusiast and dad to three-yearold
Bryn and six-month-old Liam,
who understands the challenges of
bringing the little ones along for a
weekend outdoor adventure.
Here are Jamie’s top tips and
suggestions to keep in mind when
you’re planning your next camping
adventure with the family:
How do you transport your gear?
Any family trip requires taking a
lot of gear with you but a rooftop
cargo carrier opens up a world of
possibilities on your travels. Rooftop
cargo carriers are also a much safer
option both in terms of overall driving
as well as the way in which your
belongings are secured, all while
having a minimal effect on your
vehicles fuel consumption.
The extra space in a rooftop
cargo carrier means you can pack
everything, and the kitchen sink,
when going on holiday, including
strollers, fishing rods and all your
camping equipment. Packing items
into softer luggage such as duffel
bags is also a great way of utilising
every available litre that these rooftop
cargo carriers offer.
Where should you camp?
Find a flat and somewhat soft, level
ground to set up the tent. Preferably a
location close to water, then you can
go paddling, canoeing and swimming
(always remember to take life jackets
along for those little ones who aren’t
able to swim yet).
Camping and exploring the outdoors with children is
great fun. All you need to ensure is that you’re properly
prepared. And that there are enough snacks!
What type of tent is best for a family?
It depends on the type of adventure. If you are going to carry it with you on a
hike, weight and wind resistance are important considerations for the tent. The
tent needs to be big enough to fit the whole family. Rooftop tents are also a
great solution and are quick and easy to setup. They can also be packed away
within minutes and you don’t have to connect a bunch of poles and secure
them in the ground like a ground tent. All you have to do is unfold the tent and
you’re done. This means more time exploring and less time setting up camp!
What to do when camping
with kids?
We love to paddle on our SUP boards.
The feeling of being just above the
surface of the water is amazing! It’s
easy, peaceful and safe but still full of
adventure for the kids. It’s possible
to paddle wherever there is water,
whether on a river, a small lake or in
the ocean. Make sure the kids are well
hydrated and well fed with proper
meals and snacks. Let them take part
and have something to do rather
than just tagging along. The kids can
paddle themselves and be a part of
the activity!
If you prefer hiking invest in a child
carrier backpack. We don’t go
anywhere without our Thule Sapling
that gives our little one a great view
and a comfortable, secure ride.
Much like Thule’s hiking backpacks,
these carrier backpacks are all about
comfort and smart features. The plush,
height adjustable, ergonomic seat
distributes the child’s weight, while
the back panel and hip belt are quick
and easy to adjust and effortlessly
transitions between parents – a
lifesaver on longer hikes!
Mountain biking is great fun for the
whole family with trails, speed and
nature! You can go longer distances
than hiking and it is also easy to bring
smaller kids in a bike trailer or bike
seat. Bike riding together as a family
is a great way to bond outdoors and
makes exercise fun for all.
Jamie’s top tips
Be patient, remember that everything takes much more time with
children. Leave time for the small things, like watching a frog, picking
blueberries or playing in muddy puddles! Speed and distance don’t count,
what matters is that the kids are having fun!
Find small things for the kids to take responsibility for, this makes them feel
important and involved. It can be helping to put up the tent, arranging the
sleeping bags inside the tent, handing out the snacks or packing their own
bag for the camping trip.
Always remember to…
• Take along enough snacks!
• Add extra activities to do during the camping trip (like paddle boarding,
canoeing, hiking or biking)
• Choose a camping spot where the kids can safely play and have a
good time
• Don’t forget a dummy or a favourite stuffed animal for bedtime
• Invite friends to join the camping trip, or let your older kids bring a friend
• Make sure you have enough drinking water and the family stays hydrated
Camping with kids checklist
This month sees a
new home for Thule SA ... based
on the incredible Stockholm flagship
store, the new spot in The Neighbourhood
Square in Linksfield will be all clean lines, a
minimalist look and top-class Swedish design.
Pop in and explore the destination-oriented
vehicle accessories - think roof racks, and carriers for
bicycles, kayaks and canoes. There are also hard and
soft shell rooftop tents made for rugged adventures
off the beaten path ... rooftop tents are great for local
explorations or weekend getaways with family and
friends and easily transform your vehicle into a home
away from home. There’s also a collection of bags
and luggage, and an Active with Kids range, which
includes sport and city strollers, child bike seats and
carrier backpacks and more ... everything mum
and dad need to take the kids along when
