DON’T PANIC
John Sjovik
In moments of stress, people will revert to that which is familiar. They will seek refuge in certain behaviours,
attitudes or reactions which is part of their subconscious understanding of themselves, of what they are used
to, in order to protect themselves.
Such behaviour will often be connected to a certain situation, place or surrounding. People will have a go-to
behaviour in the workplace, another in the sports club and a different one at home. Regrettably, that can often
be a drink, a cigarette or a raised voice.
I think many of us remember a typical film scene with someone saying “I need a drink”. It is important to
actively work on replacing the drink, the cigarette and the raised voice with peace, keeping a distance,
breathing deeply or similar behaviour that is positive, benevolent and calming.
Some actors make use of this phenomenon. Through intense rehearsal, they construct a go-to behaviour
connected to the work on stage or film set. If they feel stressed in front of an audience or camera, they will
automatically seek comfort in the script, in the character they play or in the layout of the stage they stand on.
