Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 25
Is it the absence of “something”? Is “nothing” an entity
that can be measured? Can one set of nothingness be
less than another set of nothingness?
And is “zero” and “nothing” really the same thing? Both
are expressions and there is always a risk that we get
lost in language. The human language, its words,
grammar and syntax, is really a blunt tool for describing
life, existence and the world around us. However, with
due consideration of the way we humans express
ourselves, “zero” is a number in mathematics,
represented by the numeral 0, whereas “nothing” has a
more philosophical quality to it.
Zero is not a prime number. Neither is it a composite
number. There are not any unique factorials that
multiplied with each other would give you zero (unless
one of them is zero).
A line of thought that is common for most of us, is that
each concept or subject has an opposite. We talk about
light and darkness, good and evil, God and the Devil,
sound and silence, safety and danger etc. The division in
opposites is something human beings do, in order to
better understand the world around us.
We find it hard to talk about “something” without
acknowledging the opposite of “something”, which we
could call “nothing”.
There is a line which I have heard in several movies: “it
is what it is”. Those words actually agree with the Greek
philosopher Parmenides (5th century BC) who claimed
that emptiness actually is something. With reference to
the quoted movie line, Parmenides would only talk
about “it is”, not “it is not”. He maintained that you can
only talk about that which is, not that which is not.
Also, remember the famous quote from Archimedes,
who said that “nature abhors a vacuum”. Any space will
immediately be filled with something.
Another aspect that should be kept in mind is that many
features of what we call reality are simply a
consequence of certain conditions on planet Earth. Our
understanding of reality also reflects the biochemistry
and physiology of us as human beings, with our five
natural senses and the limitations we inhabit as an
expression of our species.
