MATHEMATICS AND
SPIRITUALITY
John Sjovik
There is a lot written about mathematics, and the
spiritual, mystical and magical side to it. There are
books, articles and plenty of information and analysis
on the internet. What I write in this article is a selection
of my own thoughts and feelings; what I have
channelled through interaction with Spirit. I have made
no attempt at being neither complete nor conclusive in
my treatment of the vast subject of mathematics and
spirituality.
So is there something to it? Is there magic in numbers?
Is there numbers in magic?
When I was a kid, arithmetic was my first journey into
the world of mathematics. My childhood was riddled
with insecurity and anxiety. When I learned that
addition, subtraction, multiplication and division always
followed the same rules, I was fascinated. 2 + 3 = 5
today. The addition would render the same result
tomorrow as it did yesterday. Also next year, 2 + 3
would result in 5. Even with a new teacher in school or
a new government in parliament, 2 +3 would still be 5.
I realized that I could trust arithmetic. Addition and the
other basic ways of calculation became my friends. I
could rely on them. They would never fail me. Finally,
there was something in my life that never changed.
Arithmetic was not whimsical, capricious or based on
serendipity. It was magically consistent and never
changing.
Numbers are symbols. It is important to keep that in
mind. When I was a boy, I found myself particularly
fascinated with the number 7. I had no idea why. I had
never come across a 7, never seen one in the woods
near where I lived. The farmers, my family visited to
buy potatoes, apples and honey, had fruit trees, bees
and cows. They did not have any 7s.
