1. Introduction
Reports from local rating agencies have just been released indicating that Brazil
ascended to the 9th world’s largest economy position in the end of 2023 after a
period of fast GDP increase and internal market heating, confirming the
International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecast in such regard and the country’s
leading economic position within the LATAM region.
At times like this, the country tends to experience international investments’
enhancement, which is usually followed by local economic activities’ increase
conducted by global conglomerates, mainly from Europe, China and the US
interested in good investment opportunities.
Companies doing business in Brazil, however, are subject to complex labour,
employment, union, and immigration legal provisions, sometimes dealing with
excessive bureaucracy and authorities who may enlarge law interpretation against
them, affecting the contractual imbalance between employers and employees.
In this case, there might be challenges to expat workforce from branches headquartered
in Brazil and abroad.
On the other hand, the federal government has remodelled visa requirements (first
stablished in the 80’s) enabling companies to conduct expat and global mobility
programs more easily.
This article, therefore, aims at highlighting most common challenges companies
are subject to when (i) expating Brazilian employees to work abroad and (ii)
assigning workforce to Brazil.
In addition, a sum-up table of visa requirements is also reproduced in the end of
the text for easy consultation.
