Tree seedling programs help to restore wildlife habitat, prevent erosion <strong>and</strong> add beauty to private <strong>and</strong> public l<strong>and</strong>s.<br />

Windbreak construction protects crops, livestock <strong>and</strong> structures while adding species diversity to l<strong>and</strong>scapes with<br />

few or no trees.<br />

Seedlings are available to l<strong>and</strong>owners who own at least one acre of l<strong>and</strong> in <strong>New</strong> <strong>Mexico</strong> <strong>and</strong> who agree to use the<br />

trees for conservation purposes. Approximately 45 species of tree <strong>and</strong> shrubs are available, including Colorado<br />

blue spruce, Douglas-fir, Scotch pine, piñon, Afghanistan pine, Arizona ash, chokecherry, serviceberry, native plum,<br />

winterfat, skunkbush sumac <strong>and</strong> many others. Many species sold are native to <strong>New</strong> <strong>Mexico</strong>.<br />

Seedling Specifics: Seedlings are sold in several sizes, from bare root stock to two-year-growth seedlings. Purchase<br />

requirements are as follows (subject to change without notice): bare root: minimum 50 plants; one season growth:<br />

minimum 49 plants; two season growth: minimum 20 plants.<br />

Distribution: Spring ordering starts the first Monday in December <strong>and</strong> continues through mid-April; distribution is<br />

March through mid-April. Fall ordering begins the first week of July; distribution is mid-September through mid-<br />

October.<br />

Bernalillo District covers 6.6 million<br />

acres comprising 160,000 acres of<br />

commercial forest, 1.54 million acres of<br />

piñon-juniper <strong>and</strong> Bosque woodl<strong>and</strong>,<br />

<strong>and</strong> 4.9 million acres of non-forested<br />

watershed.<br />

In 2010, the Bernalillo District assisted<br />

l<strong>and</strong>owners <strong>and</strong> fire departments by<br />

providing field visits, written forest<br />

management plans, design- <strong>and</strong> costsharing<br />

of forest conservation practices<br />

such as thinning <strong>and</strong> tree planting
