How are <strong>ethanol</strong>-gasol<strong>in</strong>e blends prepared?<br />

Ethanol <strong>and</strong> gasol<strong>in</strong>e have good miscibility <strong>and</strong> it is relatively easy to prepare blends<br />

with them. The simplest method, which is extensively <strong>use</strong>d <strong>in</strong> <strong>Brazil</strong>, is to blend<br />

them at the distributor’s base when load<strong>in</strong>g the tanker truck that will carry the<br />

product to the po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> sale. The mix<strong>in</strong>g process can be either manual, preferably by<br />

first fill<strong>in</strong>g the desired volume <strong>of</strong> <strong>ethanol</strong> <strong>and</strong> then the gasol<strong>in</strong>e, or automatic <strong>in</strong>-l<strong>in</strong>e<br />

blend<strong>in</strong>g, at the very <strong>fuel</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e that fills up the tanker truck.<br />

The mix<strong>in</strong>g process requires the same caution <strong>and</strong> safety measures as <strong>use</strong>d<br />

for h<strong>and</strong>l<strong>in</strong>g any other <strong>fuel</strong>s. It is important to prevent the mixture from be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

contam<strong>in</strong>ated with water <strong>in</strong> order to avoid eng<strong>in</strong>e problems.<br />

Can <strong>ethanol</strong> be <strong>use</strong>d alone as <strong>fuel</strong>?<br />

<strong>Brazil</strong> has been the world’s major laboratory for the <strong>use</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>ethanol</strong> as a <strong>fuel</strong>, <strong>and</strong><br />

more than 5 million vehicles designed to run exclusively on <strong>ethanol</strong> have been<br />

manufactured <strong>in</strong> the country. Although <strong>ethanol</strong> has a lower energy content than<br />

straight gasol<strong>in</strong>e (approximately 65 percent), it has several technical characteristics<br />

that make it perfectly suited for <strong>use</strong> as a <strong>fuel</strong> <strong>and</strong> partially make up for that lower<br />

energy content, such as the <strong>fuel</strong>’s high octane rat<strong>in</strong>g. In practice, vehicles that run<br />

exclusively on <strong>ethanol</strong> display a better performance (greater power <strong>and</strong> torque)<br />

<strong>and</strong> a longer service life than the gasol<strong>in</strong>e-<strong>fuel</strong>ed equivalents. On the other<br />

h<strong>and</strong>, consumption <strong>in</strong>creases by 20 to 30 percent <strong>in</strong> volume, depend<strong>in</strong>g on the<br />

characteristics <strong>of</strong> the vehicle.<br />

Compared to fossil <strong>fuel</strong>s, <strong>ethanol</strong> provides more environmental benefits beca<strong>use</strong><br />

the <strong>fuel</strong> vapors <strong>and</strong> gas emissions from the exhaust are less toxic, <strong>and</strong> also beca<strong>use</strong><br />

the emission <strong>of</strong> carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) result<strong>in</strong>g from production <strong>and</strong> <strong>use</strong> <strong>of</strong> the<br />

product, which accounts for most <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> the greenho<strong>use</strong> effect, can be<br />

absorbed by sugar-cane through the photosynthesis process.<br />

Based on the experienced ga<strong>in</strong>ed from the <strong>use</strong> <strong>of</strong> exclusively <strong>ethanol</strong>-<strong>fuel</strong>ed vehicles,<br />

the <strong>fuel</strong> started to be <strong>use</strong>d <strong>in</strong> aviation, as <strong>in</strong> the case <strong>of</strong> the IPANEMA, which has<br />

been commercially produced by Embraer s<strong>in</strong>ce 2004 (www.aeroneiva.com.br).<br />

Straight <strong>ethanol</strong> can also be <strong>use</strong>d <strong>in</strong> Flex-Fuel eng<strong>in</strong>es, as well as <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustrial facilities<br />

for generat<strong>in</strong>g thermal energy <strong>and</strong> electricity <strong>and</strong> as a feedstock for hydrogen<br />

production, to be <strong>use</strong>d <strong>in</strong> <strong>fuel</strong> cell systems.<br />
