What has the role <strong>of</strong> technology been <strong>in</strong> the<br />

constant cost reduction <strong>in</strong> <strong>ethanol</strong> production<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce 1975?<br />

The reduction <strong>of</strong> <strong>ethanol</strong> production costs <strong>in</strong> <strong>Brazil</strong> s<strong>in</strong>ce the implementation<br />

<strong>of</strong> the program have occurred on the back <strong>of</strong> technological breakthroughs,<br />

improved management <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestments <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>frastructure. These reductions have<br />

been achieved <strong>in</strong> an environment marked by far-rang<strong>in</strong>g discussions <strong>of</strong> political<br />

<strong>and</strong> economic conditions (governmental support at the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g, followed by<br />

deregulation; liquid <strong>fuel</strong> policies; construction <strong>of</strong> an important legislation/regulation<br />

framework for environmental <strong>and</strong> social topics). Advances <strong>in</strong> competitiveness have<br />

been supported by <strong>in</strong>vestments (production, logistics) <strong>and</strong> a significant development<br />

<strong>and</strong> implementation <strong>of</strong> technologies.<br />

What are the ma<strong>in</strong> topics <strong>in</strong> the technological<br />

development <strong>of</strong> <strong>Brazil</strong>’s <strong>ethanol</strong> production?<br />

More flexible operations <strong>in</strong>tegrated with two products (sugar <strong>and</strong> <strong>ethanol</strong>) have also<br />

relied on advances <strong>in</strong> several processes:<br />

1980/1990: Introduction <strong>of</strong> new sugar-cane varieties developed <strong>in</strong> <strong>Brazil</strong>;<br />

new gr<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g systems; fermentation with much greater capacities; <strong>use</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> v<strong>in</strong>asse as a fertilizer; biological control <strong>of</strong> the sugar-cane beetle;<br />

optimization <strong>of</strong> agricultural operations; autonomy <strong>in</strong> energy.<br />

1990/2000: Start <strong>of</strong> energy surplus sales; improved technical, agricultural<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustrial management; new sugar-cane harvest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> transportation<br />

systems; advanced <strong>in</strong>dustrial automation.<br />
