IAS are highly detrimental to attempts to preserve native biodiversity for the long term.<br />

Conclusions and recommendations<br />

Sri Lanka urgently needs an effective mechanism to deal with all activities related to IAS.<br />

Ministry of Forestry and Environment of Sri Lanka, the national focal point for the CBD, would<br />

be the ideal coordinator of such initiatives. Education and awareness are the key elements to<br />

remedy the threats of the invasive species to natural agricultural ecosystems of Sri Lanka.<br />

There is an urgent need to improve current and future management programmes of IAS by<br />

using historical and existing measures more strategically and effectively, and integrating the<br />

efforts of all stakeholders, including governments at all levels, non-governmental<br />

organizations, industry, community groups and the general public. Thus, a national invasive<br />

species action plan is required, prepared and implemented through a coordinating body which<br />

oversees all aspects of issues of IAS, including the human dimensions.<br />
