values to explain why IAS are bad. It may help us to become aware of the fact that we can
develop new story lines and new chapters to the narratives we share with one another about the
During the formative phases of this article a number of conversations with Dr. David M.
Richardson of the Institute for Plant Conservation, Botany Department, University of Cape
Town, as well as comments from the participants at the Cape Town Workshop of the Global
Invasive Species Programme (GISP) contributed towards the crystallization of many of the
points made here. I acknowledge these inputs with appreciation, without holding my partners in
dialogue responsible for the point of view assumed in this article. For this I alone have to take
the responsibility. I also acknowledge pre-publication access to an anonymous article about
invasive alien species that was submitted to me for blind refereeing by the journal
Environmental Values, published by the White Horse Press, Cambridge, UK. Although no
explicit use of material in that article was made in this paper, traces of influences from it could
be evident in minor instances here and there. At the time of going to press (January 2001), no
details were available about the publication of this article in Environmental Values.
