• Cashew processing (six to seven hours a day) from mid-2006 to mid-2008 in Binh<br />

Duc center: Que Phong was paid around VND200,000 ($9.50) a month. 186<br />

• Agricultural work, cashew processing, and making bamboo products (eight hours a<br />

day) from 2006 until 2008 in Center No. 3: Quynh Luu earned VND120,000 ($5.50)<br />

• Agricultural work and cashew processing (eight hours a day, sometimes more) from<br />

2006 until the end of 2009 at the Phuoc Binh center: Huong Son was paid between<br />

VND200,000 and 300,000 ($9.50 to$14.50) a month. 188<br />

All figures are for wages before center-imposed deductions. <strong>The</strong> US dollar equivalents are<br />

approximate, based on an exchange rate of US$1: VND 19,500.<br />

Center-Imposed Deductions from Wages<br />

On paper I earned [VND] 120,000 a month but they took it. <strong>The</strong> center staff<br />

said it paid for our food and clothes.<br />

—Quynh Luu, who spent over five years at Center No. 3, Binh Duong province189 Ly Nhan was detained for four years in Nhi Xuan center. He explained the types of<br />

deductions that the center levied:<br />

I earned a wage of VND300,000 ($14.50) a month [making bricks] but the<br />

net amount was VND100,000 to 120,000 ($5.50) after center staff deducted<br />

money for accommodation, water, electricity and a management fee. 190<br />

Truc Ninh told <strong>Human</strong> <strong>Rights</strong> <strong>Watch</strong> that during her year-and-a-half at the Nhi Xuan center:<br />

I made VND400,000 ($19) a month but they took money for food and<br />

housing so I really only got VND200,000 to 300,000 ($9.50 to $14.50). 191<br />
