DeSimone and his co-workers have <strong>in</strong>tensively studied polymerization reactions<br />

<strong>in</strong> an environmentally friendly solvent, CO 2 . In the presence of CO 2 -philic<br />

silicone-based macromonomer, 45, relatively monodisperse micron-sized polymer<br />

particles were obta<strong>in</strong>ed by the polymerization of MMA and styrene <strong>in</strong> supercritical<br />

CO 2 [123].<br />

Sosnowski et al. [124, 125] have reported that uniform biodegradable polymeric<br />

particles with diameters of less than 5 µm can be prepared by r<strong>in</strong>gopen<strong>in</strong>g<br />

dispersion polymerization of L,L-lactide <strong>in</strong> heptane-dioxane mixed<br />

solvent <strong>in</strong> the presence of poly(dodecyl acrylate)-g-poly(e-caprolactone),<br />

which were synthesized by copolymerization of dodecyl acrylate with poly(ecaprolactone)<br />

macromonomers, 46. It is noted that the polymer particles consist<br />

of well-def<strong>in</strong>ed poly(L,L-lactide) polymers with M n »1´10 4 and<br />

M w /M n »1.06.<br />
