ever, at the present time on St. Paul Island,
hookworm infections and numbers of infected
fur seals are so low that these parasites appear
to be at a minimal or subminimal level for continued
existence. If older fur seals had infections
of adult hookworms contributing eggs to the environment,
continued success of the hookworms
presumably would be more likely. Possibly the
highly evolved, exclusive manner of transmammary
transmission of U. lucasi has become a
detriment for the species under the present conditions
on St. Paul Island.
