Historical Season
Delaware's Men's Basketball
Team had a historical
season which began with the
first meeting between the
Hens and the Delaware State
Hornets and ended with a
birth to the NCAA Tournament.
The Hens also had their
first game televised on ESPN,
their first 20 game win streak
(which is a new school record),
and their first season
with 27 wins, also a school
record.
The Hens began their season
with four wins and then
suffered a disappointing 99-
95 loss to Delaware State.
They continued their excellent
playing with only two
other losses during the regular
season, this qualified the
Hens to play in the NAC
Championship. First they met
Hartford and won 92-56. Next
136 Men's Basketball
was Vermont with another
win of 74-62. Finally it was the
big game, the NAC Championship
which placed Delaware
against Drexel for their
third meeting of the year. The
Hens won with a score of 92-
68 and became the NAC
Champions.
Because of the NAC Title,
the Hens qualified for the
NCAA Tournament. Going
into the tournament, the Hens
had the longest winning
streak in the nation with 20
wins. On March 20, 1992 the
Hens played the Cincinnati
Bearcats in the first round of
the NCAA Tournament.
Thousands of students, back
on campus, watched as the
Hens attempted to beat the
Bearcats, but sadly enough
they lost 47-85.
The Hens also earned many
honors this season. Coach
Steve Steinwedel was chosen
NAC Coach of the Year and
Kodak/NABC District 3
Coach of the Year. Alex Coles
was chosen the NAC Tournament
Most Valuable Player
and 1st Team All-NAC.
Mark Murray was selected to
the NAC All-Tournament
Team and 1st Team All-NAC.
Freshman Brian Pearl was selected
as the NAC Rookie of
the Year and NAC All-Tournament
Team.
The Hens will lose 5 seniors,
but Coach Steinwedel
thinks the prospects for next
year look very good.
