visitor. The plants, as primary interpretive materials <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>garden</strong>, should be clearly identified with labels giving<br />

both their scientific and common names. For trees, the en-<br />

graved laminated plastic labels supplied <strong>by</strong> the Fairmount<br />

Park Commission are recommended. These labels are incon-<br />

spicuous, though easily read even when placed high on the<br />

trunks <strong>of</strong> trees out <strong>of</strong> the reach <strong>of</strong> potential vandals. For<br />

shrubs and very small trees, small metal embossed labels,<br />

available from the Morris Arboretum, are recommended. These<br />

are relatively inexpensive and can easily be replaced if<br />

lost 0<br />

Because <strong>of</strong> their high cost and vulnerability to<br />

vandals, story labels should be given low priority. Though<br />

these are an effective means <strong>of</strong> <strong>interpretation</strong>, resources<br />

can be better utilized <strong>by</strong> publishing a self-guided tour<br />

pamphlet which would be available to the visitor from the<br />

house guard at low cost. Plants and various points <strong>of</strong> inter-<br />

est throughout the <strong>garden</strong> could then be code-numbered with<br />

small plastic engraved labels which would correspond with<br />

numbers on the map and guide. In the guide each plant<br />

species or point <strong>of</strong> interest would be described in a con-<br />

cise, interesting, and informative manner. Priority should<br />

be given to the <strong>interpretation</strong> <strong>of</strong> those species which best<br />

fulfill the selection criteria previously listed, and the<br />

<strong>interpretation</strong> should stress those points which caused the<br />

species to be included in Bartram's Garden. In the future
