species. In fact, Manasseh Cutler observed that in Bartram's<br />

Garden "There is no situation in which plants or trees are<br />

found but that they may be propagated here in one that is<br />

similar." 1<br />

A testing <strong>of</strong> the soil <strong>of</strong> Bartram's Garden has.shown<br />

it to be relatively uniform throughout, having a silt-loam<br />

texture and a pH ranging from 4.7 to 5.3 [see Appendix I].<br />

Consequently, the major remaining factors in determining<br />

placement <strong>of</strong> species are soil moisture and wind and sun<br />

exposure .<br />

Visitor Circulation<br />

The present grid walkway system, not being authentic,<br />

was probably added between l@3, the year the City <strong>of</strong> Phila-<br />

delphia acquired the property and 1907, when it was shown on<br />

a diagram <strong>of</strong> Bartram's Garden.*<br />

If the present walkways were removed so as to authen-<br />

tically restore the <strong>garden</strong>, no efficient means <strong>of</strong> visitor<br />

circulation would remain. Thus, it is recommended that these<br />

walks be left intact. Any revision <strong>of</strong> the walks to make<br />

them seem more appropriate would only tend to give a false<br />

sense <strong>of</strong> authenticity. An exception to this general rule<br />

involves the walks on the upper terrace which require re-<br />
