be restored to their original straight pattern so that their<br />
original utilitarian purpose would be apparent.<br />
To supplement the paved walkways, grassy trails are<br />
recommended in the northeast section <strong>of</strong> the <strong>garden</strong> and along<br />
the river (see circulation plan, page 25). These trails<br />
should be close-mowed at weekly intervals to clearly differ-<br />
entiate the trail and make it easy to traverse. In the<br />
boggy areas along the river the trail should be mulched<br />
heavily with wood chips,<br />
A loop route in conjunctian with a self-guided tour<br />
would aid the visitor to the <strong>garden</strong>. This loop route would<br />
pass near most <strong>of</strong> the interesting plants and features in the<br />
<strong>garden</strong> without causing visitors to retrace their steps. R<br />
suggested route is shown on page 25. Except for the segment<br />
along the river, the route is on paved walks. This river<br />
segment <strong>of</strong> the loop could be easily omitted in inclement<br />
weather or <strong>by</strong> those not able to descend the rough trail to<br />
the river. Each point <strong>of</strong> interest along the trail should be<br />
labeled with a number corresponding to items in the self-<br />
guided tour pamphlet (see page 11).<br />
Kitchen and Flower Gardens <strong>of</strong> the 1756 Drawing<br />
As seen in the 175g drawing, Rartram had areas in<br />
his <strong>garden</strong> which he called the new flower <strong>garden</strong>, the common<br />
flower <strong>garden</strong>, and the upper and lower kitchen <strong>garden</strong>s.
