SHIPPING AND SHIP MANAGEMENT “Both the Estonians and the Lithuanians sometimes tend to think that the marine industry does not need to be helped – it is well off already. We are trying to explain that yes, a seaman earns more than most people, but if you look around in the world, it becomes evident that it is necessary. Europeans do not want to go to sea, and the same goes for Lithuanians. So we can only attract people with very good pay and conditions. <strong>No</strong> one wants to work on an old ship. Everyone wants a new one with new technology, automated systems and so on. This require us to make investments. The acts applied for are required for exactly this purpose – to make money to modernise the fleet. We have to attract our students to work here. In cooperation with various maritime companies Limarko is preparing scholarships for 3rd and 4th year students from the Lithuanian Maritime College so that they come to work in the company later. These will be almost twice the national scholarship, which is only available to students who have excellent results.” In Estonia Tallink is such a large cor poration that it overshadows the existence and needs of all other shipowners for decisionmakers, what else does the maritime industry need? “We do have a slightly different situation – there are three large shipping companies in Lithuania, and one of them is state-owned. These are important companies and no one thinks that laws are made simply for one company or executive. In that sense we have it slightly easier. The Government and the Parliament realise that a strong fleet means a strong state.” Is this not a matter of political culture? “Both political and maritime culture. The understanding of what a fleet is and what a sea-going nation is. The understanding of how important the development of the fleet is for the development of the state.
