Introduction 1<br />

OpenStorage (<strong>OST</strong>) is a feature of <strong>Symantec</strong>’s Veritas NetBackup backup and recovery product.<br />

<strong>OST</strong> integrates NetBackup with disk backup devices, such as <strong>Data</strong> <strong>Domain</strong> systems. <strong>OST</strong> enables<br />

NetBackup media servers to communicate with disk devices without having to emulate tape used<br />

by virtual tape libraries (VTL).<br />

The NetBackup system sets policies that control when backups occur while the storage devices<br />

control data deduplication, replication, and compression. Administrators manage backup,<br />

replication, and restores from a single NetBackup console and can use all of <strong>Data</strong> <strong>Domain</strong>’s<br />

intelligent features, including WAN-efficient replicator software. NetBackup manage all images<br />

(collections of data) in the NetBackup catalog, even if the <strong>Data</strong> <strong>Domain</strong> system creates the images.<br />

In the typical <strong>Data</strong> <strong>Domain</strong> <strong>OST</strong> configuration shown below, each media server is running a<br />

different (supported) operating system.<br />
