On the 5th of March 1986, 31 soldiers and officers marched<br />

into Vassdalen in Northern Norway. Only 15 came out alive.<br />

16 young soldiers died when the 2nd platoon of the Engineer<br />

Company was caught in an avalanche. In the years that followed,<br />

the survivors were haunted by this grueling experience.<br />

25 years later, they do the same march over again. The<br />

conundrum they all try to solve is this: Is it possible to get<br />

rid of the ghosts from the past once and for all?<br />

In one of Russia’s most polluted areas, the young environmentalist<br />

Vitaliy Servetnik travels from town to town to recruit<br />

teenage activists. He is an acknowledged spokesperson<br />

for the environmental cause, and leads the biggest environmental<br />

NGO in the region. The film depicts the director’s<br />

meeting with Vitaliy, as well as with a new Russia where the<br />

authorities use all their imagination to try to stop young,<br />

enthusiastic people from having their say.<br />

river portrays the Yukon River as evolving against the<br />

trends of our times, from the turn of the last century when<br />

the population along the banks peaked, to the present day<br />

when forests and wildlife have returned and the only travelers<br />

one sees are a few adventure seekers – it is a river that<br />

flows from the future into the past.
