73 år gamle Ma og bestevennen Cao var en gang kistemakere. Etter at den
kinesiske regjeringen tillot kremasjon, har behovet for kister blitt betydelig
mindre. Nå tilbringer Ma tida med sine barnebarn. Da Ma kommer hjem
etter å ha feiret høstfestivalen hos datteren og hennes familie, får han vite at
Cao er død og at kisten hans ligger et hemmelig sted i en maisåker ved siden
av en innsjø. Etter hvert påstår Ma å ha sett en hvit trane ved denne innsjøen

73-year-old Ma and his good friend Cao were once coffin makers. Since the
Chinese government implemented the practice of cremation, the demand
for coffins dried up. Ma now spends his days with his grandchildren. When
Ma returns from spending the mid-Autumn festival with his daughter and
her family, he is told that Cao has passed away and that his coffin is secretly
buried in a cornfield next to a lake. Later, Ma claims to have seen a white
crane by the lake, and waits by the lake everyday for it. When Ma becomes a
laughingstock of the neighborhood, his grandchildren innocently propose to
take the matter into their own hands.
fly with the crane is a subtle and moving portrait, with static shots
and long takes that create a realistic feel. It deals with the process of coming
to terms with death and old age, and with the limitations of dignity.
