Provisional driver’s licence (P1 and P2) rules and conditions.<br />

You are only allowed to drive <strong>the</strong> class of vehicle stated on your<br />

provisional licence under <strong>the</strong> following conditions:<br />

• you must not drive a motor vehicle when <strong>the</strong>re is any<br />

concentration of alcohol in your blood or <strong>the</strong> presence of THC<br />

(Cannabis), Methylamphetamine (Speed) or MDMA (Ecstasy) in<br />

your blood or oral fluid (saliva)<br />

• if you commit a speeding offence, you will also commit a breach<br />

of your provisional licence conditions if you exceed <strong>the</strong> speed<br />

limit by 10 km/h or more.<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r rules:<br />

• you must display <strong>the</strong> prescribed ‘P’ plates so that <strong>the</strong>y are clearly<br />

visible from <strong>the</strong> front and rear of <strong>the</strong> vehicle. (P2 drivers do not<br />

need to display ‘P’ plates)<br />

• you must carry your provisional licence at all times whilst driving<br />

• you must not exceed <strong>the</strong> 100 km/h speed limit at any time<br />

• you must not accumulate four or more demerit points during <strong>the</strong><br />

provisional licence period<br />

• Drivers who gain a P1 provisional licence on or after<br />

4 September 2010 and are under <strong>the</strong> age of 25 must not<br />

drive a high-powered vehicle until <strong>the</strong>y gain a full driver’s<br />

licence.<br />

High-powered vehicles are:<br />

• vehicles with engines of eight or more cylinders<br />

• vehicles with turbocharged or supercharged engines (excluding<br />

diesel powered vehicles)<br />

• vehicles that have been modified to increase engine performance<br />

• nominated high performance vehicles.<br />

Note: Exemptions may be approved in special circumstances, for<br />

example if a high-powered vehicle is required for employment. For<br />

fur<strong>the</strong>r information please visit www.mylicence.sa.gov.au.<br />

• Provisional drivers returning from a disqualification, for committing<br />

a serious disqualification offence, must drive with a qualified<br />

supervising driver during <strong>the</strong>ir curfew times of midnight to 5 am.<br />

No o<strong>the</strong>r passengers may be carried.<br />

If you do not comply with <strong>the</strong>se rules and conditions you may be fined,<br />

incur demerit points, be disqualified from driving, have your licence<br />

cancelled, have to return to an earlier licensing step and have your<br />

provisional licence period extended when you regain your licence.<br />

Obtaining a P2 Provisional Licence<br />

To progress to a P2 provisional licence you must hold a P1 provisional<br />

licence for a minimum of 12 months (if you have not incurred any demerit<br />

points) and pass a Hazard Perception Test. If a P1 driver has no more<br />

than 3 demerit points in <strong>the</strong> preceding 12 months <strong>the</strong>y may also get a<br />

P2 licence after taking a Driver Awareness Course (DAC). Although P2<br />

drivers do not need to display ‘P’ plates, <strong>the</strong>y do need to obey all o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

provisional licence conditions.
