Share <strong>the</strong> road<br />

Scan <strong>the</strong> road for cyclists when turning or entering <strong>the</strong> roadway and<br />

when negotiating roundabouts. Give cyclists plenty of room when<br />

overtaking and note that cyclists are allowed to ride two abreast.<br />

Motor vehicle drivers also need to know <strong>the</strong> rules and<br />

responsibilities of cyclists<br />

Bicycle lanes<br />

Bicycle riders must, if practicable, use a bicycle lane during <strong>the</strong> times<br />

of operation if one is available, but may move out of <strong>the</strong> bicycle lane<br />

to avoid debris, potholes, an obstacle, or to overtake ano<strong>the</strong>r bicycle.<br />

Turning and overtaking<br />

Bicycle riders are required to give a hand signal when turning or<br />

diverging to <strong>the</strong> right, except when doing a hook turn.<br />

It is also advisable for cyclists to indicate <strong>the</strong>ir intentions to o<strong>the</strong>r road<br />

users when turning left or stopping.<br />

Bicycle riders are permitted to make a right turn by doing a hook turn<br />

– crossing an intersection on <strong>the</strong> left side and waiting on <strong>the</strong> opposite<br />

corner for a break in traffic before proceeding along <strong>the</strong> road into<br />

which <strong>the</strong> turn is to be made.<br />

Bicycle riders can overtake ano<strong>the</strong>r vehicle on <strong>the</strong> left, but not if it is<br />

indicating and turning left.<br />

Equipment<br />

Helmets – Riders must wear an approved bicycle helmet (one that<br />

meets ASNZS2063).<br />

Warning device – Every bicycle must have an effective warning device<br />

such as a bell or a horn in working order.<br />

Lighting – When riding at night or times of reduced visibility you must<br />

have, ei<strong>the</strong>r on <strong>the</strong>mselves or <strong>the</strong>ir bicycle:<br />

• a front flashing or steady white light that is clearly visible at least<br />

200 metres from <strong>the</strong> front of <strong>the</strong> bicycle<br />

• a rear flashing or steady red light that is clearly visible at least 200<br />

metres from <strong>the</strong> rear of <strong>the</strong> bicycle<br />

• a rear reflector that is clearly visible from at least 50 metres from <strong>the</strong><br />

rear of <strong>the</strong> bicycle when light is projected on to it by low beam.<br />

Alcohol<br />

No person can drink alcohol without affecting <strong>the</strong>ir ability to drive a<br />

vehicle or ride a motorcycle or bicycle. It is also an offence to ride a<br />

bicycle ‘under <strong>the</strong> influence’ (DUI).<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Bicycle riders must not ride within two metres of <strong>the</strong> rear of a moving<br />

motor vehicle continuously for more than 200 metres. They also must<br />

not hold on to <strong>the</strong> rear of a moving vehicle.<br />

You or your passenger must not lead an animal while driving a motor<br />

vehicle or riding a bicycle.<br />

Cyclists are allowed to ride two abreast however when a bicycle lane<br />

is in operation, cyclists must remain within <strong>the</strong> bicycle lane when<br />

riding two abreast, o<strong>the</strong>rwise ride in single file.<br />

The rider of a bicycle must not carry more people on <strong>the</strong> bicycle than<br />

it is designed to carry.<br />

The passenger on a bicycle must sit in <strong>the</strong> seat that is designed for<br />

<strong>the</strong> passenger.<br />

The rider of a bicycle must not carry a passenger who is not<br />

seated in a seat that is designed for <strong>the</strong> passenger.<br />
