What Is Energy? Scenic Journeys
Der größte aktive Tagebau Europas befindet sich in Welzow. Kohle, die hier gewonnen
wird, produziert Strom für halb Deutschland und verbraucht gleichzeitig Landschaft
in unvorstellbarer Dimension. Wer am Rand der Grube steht, begreift unmittelbar,
warum sich zum Beispiel eine eingeschaltete Wohnzimmerlampe in Berlin auf die
Stadt und die Menschen von Welzow auswirkt. An diesem eindrücklichen Ort liegt
es auf der Hand, die Frage der Energiegewinnung über die Verstromung von Kohle,
Erdöl, Uran oder Biomasse hinaus zu erweitern: Was ist Lebensenergie? Wie entsteht
sie? Szenische Reisen gehen diesen Fragen auf den Grund. Sie führen zu Menschen
am aktiven Tagebau, zu einem verlassenen Dorf und Waldrodungsgebiet, einer stillgelegten
Maschinenhalle sowie zum neuen alten Bahnhof in Welzow. The largest
operating opencast mine is situated in Welzow. The coal that is mined here is used to
produce electricity for half of Germany and at the same time consumes landscape of
unimaginable dimensions. Anybody standing at the rim of the pit can immediately
grasp why, for example, a living room bulb that has been switched on in Berlin affects
the town and people of Welzow. At this impressive site, the need becomes clear to expand
the problem of energy production beyond the conversion into electricity of coal,
oil, uranium or bio-mass: What is vital energy? How does it originate? Scenic journeys
explore these questions. They take visitors to people at the operating opencast mine,
to a deserted village and a wood clearing, an abandoned machine hall as well as to
the renewed old station in Welzow.
