clinic at ANI would serve a large population, which included
Newmarket, Epsom and the Mt Eden areas. ANI currently has a
two chair school dental clinic on site. The original plan detailed in
the agreed Business Case was to refurbish and extended this to
a three chair clinic. Subsequent assessment of the ANI site
showed that due to space restrictions, the clinic would have had
to remain as a two chair clinic. In order to meet the demand in
the area and also the number of chairs Auckland DHB committed
to in the Business Case; the DHB would have to purchase an
additional level one, one chair mobile treatment van. The
additional van was not included in the Oral Health Business Case
and would have been a compromise to having a three chair fixed
site clinic servicing this area.
The Project Manager for the Oral Health Business Case and the
Auckland Regional Dental Service (ARDS) Dental Manager held
an initial meeting with the ANI school principal to discuss the
options available for the extension and refurbishment of the
existing two chair clinic.
The school requested a set of conditions the DHB would need to
agree to prior to the school allowing the clinic to be refurbished
and extended. The DHB advised they were unable to meet the
conditions and requested a meeting with the school Board. The
Project Steering Group was denied the opportunity to meet with
the Board. The school stated that a sub-committee would be
established to consider the dental clinic. A further letter was
received by Auckland DHB with an even more extensive list of
conditions. The conditions outlined in the letter received from
ANI school principal include, but is not limited to:
o The establishment of a covered and secure bike/scooter
enclosure
o The driveway and pathway to be resealed
o Bike racks are to be relocated and new seal laid in this area
so it is suitable for additional car parking
o A new bin enclosure is developed
o The footpath and access way to Nicholson Park is widened to
accommodate all day traffic and is resealed.
The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health are aware of
the situation and are not concerned if the clinic is re-located due
to the population in this area being low risk. The Ministry of
Education has spoken with the school who advised that their
decision around the conditions for the clinic is firm – even if it
means the clinic is re-located.
