Engagement with a wide range of stakeholders has occurred including, iwi, the
Auckland Office of Kohanga Reo Trust and kura kaupapa in the ADHB region. A
steering group has been established and met in mid December 2011 to support the
pilot development and implementation. GIS maps prepared for the project by the
Auckland Regional Public health Unit detailed the following; where kohanga, puna
reo, marae are currently located, schools with significant Maori rolls, schools with
Maori medium education, the resident Maori population of the area, GP location and
school dental hubs. A more recent update also provided information on Housing
New Zealand locations. Over the next few months the steering group will focus on
identifying and confirming the proposed pilot sites and developing a business case
for funding of the pilots in 2012/13.
Breast feeding rates for Māori women, while still lower then desired, have increased
over the last two years. The Community Breastfeeding Service (CBS), established in
2009, employs a Maori breastfeeding support worker to visit whanau in their homes
to provide advice and support. Ngati Whatua o Orakei Health Services and Plunket
are undertaking the process to achieve Baby Friendly Community Initiative (BFCI)
accreditation. These breastfeeding initiatives are supported with HEHA breastfeeding
funding. The CFA for this funding expires on 30 June 2012, at this stage it is
uncertain if the CFA will be renewed.
