2 Events and news in January<br />

2.1 Events<br />

� ADHB has been selected to run a national pilot on a new care pathway for<br />

people living with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. ADHB has<br />

partnered Laura Fergusson Trust to pilot two new pulmonary rehabilitation<br />

programmes in Mt Albert and Glen Innes, with both launched in mid-January.<br />

2.2 People<br />

� Emergency Department senior registrar Dr Aashish Raj became the first<br />

recipient of the Mitchell Medal, awarded to the most promising senior trainee<br />

in emergency medicine in the <strong>Auckland</strong> region. The medal is named in honour<br />

of Robin Mitchell, who died in mid-2010 and was Director of Emergency<br />

Medicine Training.<br />

� Three current and former ADHB staff were recognised in the <strong>2012</strong> New Year’s<br />

Honours:<br />

2.3 Media<br />

Jeremy Cooper<br />

Specialist Anaesthetist Jeremy Cooper became a Member of the NZ order of<br />

Merit (MNZM). Dr Cooper became a consultant at the former Greenlane<br />

Hospital in 1998 in the Department of Anaesthesia and then went on to<br />

become Clinical Director of the same department from 2003-2007 inclusive.<br />

Chris Orchard<br />

Christine Orchard, Clinical Charge Nurse in Ward 23B, was awarded a<br />

Queen’s Service Medal for her services to children’s heart services. Christine<br />

has demonstrated a long commitment to the Children’s Cardiac Service,<br />

including the inpatient, volunteer and Heart Registry services.<br />

Bruce Hadden<br />

Former ADHB Ophthalmologist Bruce Hadden received a Companion to the<br />

NZ Order of Merit for services to ophthalmology. Dr Hadden spent 27 years at<br />

ADHB before he left in 2002.<br />

In addition, one of our recently retired GPs, Dr Jock Carnachan, MNZN was<br />

recognised.<br />

� A shortage of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit beds across the <strong>Auckland</strong> region<br />

has seen some patients transferred to other parts of the country. One mother<br />

whose baby was transferred to Tauranga complained to TV 3, resulting in a<br />

news story.
