METHODS<br />

Paragraph Number 4 Subjects and study <strong>de</strong>signo It was estimated that to show a significant<br />

increase of at least 6% in RA muscle volume a sample size of at least 10 wom<strong>en</strong> would be<br />

required (a=O.05; Power=O.80) (26, 38, 39). Tw<strong>el</strong>ve healthy prem<strong>en</strong>opausal wom<strong>en</strong> agreed<br />

to participate in the study. To be inclu<strong>de</strong>d, participants were required to be se<strong>de</strong>ntary, i.e.<br />

not have practiced any kind of regu<strong>la</strong>r exercise during the prece<strong>de</strong>nt 5 years with no<br />

previous experi<strong>en</strong>ce with <strong>Pi<strong>la</strong>tes</strong>. Additional requisites were not to be pregnant, and not to<br />

be affected by chronic diseases, muscle-sk<strong>el</strong>etal conditions, low back pain, or bone<br />

fractures. None ofthe participants have had cesarean sections. Three wom<strong>en</strong> were<br />

nulliparous, two had one child, three two childr<strong>en</strong>, and one three childr<strong>en</strong>. Three wom<strong>en</strong><br />

have had abdominal surgery before 10 years old (one app<strong>en</strong><strong>de</strong>ctomy and two had surgery<br />

to correct umbical hernias). The abdominal structure ofthese three wom<strong>en</strong> was simi<strong>la</strong>r to<br />

that observed in the rest ofthe group. AH subjects were informed about the pot<strong>en</strong>tial<br />

b<strong>en</strong>efits and risks of the study and gave a writt<strong>en</strong> cons<strong>en</strong>t to participate. Participants were<br />

also informed about the possibility to be exclu<strong>de</strong>d from the study if they missed more than<br />

one training session every 4 weeks. Betwe<strong>en</strong> the 12th and 16th weeks, 3 subjects were<br />

exclu<strong>de</strong>d from the study for this reason. Table 1 shows the main characteristics ofthe<br />

participants completing the study (n= 9). This investigation was approved by the ethical<br />

committee ofthe University ofLas Palmas <strong>de</strong> Gran Canaria.<br />

Paragraph Number 5 Participants took part on a 36-week standardized Mo<strong>de</strong>rn Studio <strong>Pi<strong>la</strong>tes</strong><br />

training program, twice weekly, for 55 min each training session. All sessions were conducted in<br />

groups of four or less participants who always trained together, at the same time of the day with<br />

the same <strong>Pi<strong>la</strong>tes</strong> instructor. Two differ<strong>en</strong>t <strong>Pi<strong>la</strong>tes</strong> instructors (certified by <strong>Pi<strong>la</strong>tes</strong> Method<br />
