(Table 2). The training program inc1u<strong>de</strong>d standardized Studio <strong>Pi<strong>la</strong>tes</strong> exercises as <strong>de</strong>scribed<br />

<strong>el</strong>sewhere (1) and showed in supplem<strong>en</strong>tary digital cont<strong>en</strong>t 1 to 4. The exercises were executed<br />

on a mat and also using a <strong>Pi<strong>la</strong>tes</strong> machine called reformer (Ba<strong>la</strong>nced Body Reformer Equipm<strong>en</strong>t,<br />

Ba<strong>la</strong>nced Body®). Footwork exercises using the Reformer were performed with two red and one<br />

gre<strong>en</strong> springs. The other Reformer exercises were performed with two red springs.<br />

Physical activity apart from <strong>Pi<strong>la</strong>tes</strong> was as ses sed using the Minnesota Leisure Time<br />

Physical Activity Questionnaire (MLTPAQ) (12). The total, mo<strong>de</strong>rate and vigorous <strong>en</strong>ergy<br />

exp<strong>en</strong>diture was not significantly changed during the interv<strong>en</strong>tion (68.6±48.3 and 57.5±35.7<br />

METs/h per week, P=O.38), before and after pi<strong>la</strong>tes training, respectiv<strong>el</strong>y.<br />

Paragraph N umber 6 Magnetic resonance imaging was used to <strong>de</strong>termine the musc1e cross­<br />

sectional areas (CSA) and musc1e volumes ofthe left and right RA, OT before and after training.<br />

All participants were right-han<strong>de</strong>d. In this artic1e the dominant si<strong>de</strong> of the OT and RA<br />

corresponds to the same si<strong>de</strong> of the dominant arm, and vice versa.<br />

Paragraph N umber 7 Body com position analysis. Total perc<strong>en</strong>tage of body fat was measured<br />

using dual-<strong>en</strong>ergy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) (QDR-1500, Hologic Corp., Software version<br />

7.10, Waltham, MA). DXA equipm<strong>en</strong>t was calibrated using a lumbar spine phantom and<br />

following the Hologic gui<strong>de</strong>lines. Subjects were scanned in supine position and the scans were<br />

performed in high resolution as previously reported (34). The coeffici<strong>en</strong>t ofvariation for the<br />

assessm<strong>en</strong>t of whole body fat mass with repositioning was b<strong>el</strong>ow 3.1 % (4).<br />
