uses of the object. That is why industrial
design and its functional nature are key to the
piece, given the concern for its finish and the
materials used. An intimate environment, the
result of turning the pencil into a small table
with two chairs, attracts spectators, almost
inciting them to interrupt, to participate in
an imagined conversation among two or more
absent persons: the artist and the other residents.
The relationship between them and with
the subject-spectator suggested by the use of
the object, all points towards a concern always
present in the work of this artist: the existence
of a communication crisis and the arbitrariness
of the use of language to define the (in)
capacity of human beings to explain reality or,
at least, what they consider real.
Lastly, Douglas Argüelles has developed
the piece Oclusion (Occlusion) which introduces
a different means of interpreting communication.
It is the space and sound which are the
essence of the piece. Sound demarcates space
as interference, intermittently distributing
information here and there. Occlusion is also
a noise in the system that we must approach
to hear and therefore depends on how ready
we are to experience it. This tendency towards
communication seems to be questioned in
the title itself, because the artist opposes
the concepts “stagnation, closure, obstruction”
to that of “free flow of information,”
somehow similar to sound over-crowding
minutes before total interruption: lack of
communication.
This new Batiscafo series of resdencies
stands as a platform for future relationships,
a first connection to transmit ideas and
projects, the space from which communication
and recognition networks may be built.
re-conocimiento.
