Without necessarily having to “understand” it, contemporary art may be savored because of it being extraordinary, because of a “bohemian” complicity that makes other parties leave behind their daily routines. Even the most critical positions are now not a threat for social and political institutions, which every day offer more signs of understanding: “it actually was a ‘representation’ not a ‘presentation’; there’s no danger.” Ideally, whenever artistic discourse operates within a given symbolic universe, its existence is convenient since it functions as an exhaust valve, while the image of the institution shapes up as crystal-clear and open to dialogue. Institutionalizing critical art (absorbing its critical function) is, as a last resort, guaranteeing the possibility of making it instrumental. Is it that art cannot be effective enough to change reality? (And is this actually necessary?!) Could a balance, a negotiation exist at least between the poetic, metaphoric, fictional nature of art and its effectiveness and militancy? Is this negotiation entirely reliable today, when the culture of entertainment, or the various economic and ideological strategies, generates an increasing banality in political discourses? The works by Mauricio Esquivel, Nuria Guell and Josuhe Hernandez offer interesting reflection models in this sense. For this new Batiscafo presentation, guest artists intervene in critical areas of the present Cuban context (although not exclusive to it), from various strategies and positions, that make us think of the relationship between art and reality. First, a Salvadoran creator, continues Línea de desplazamiento (Displacement Line), a series of interventions using coins he started El arte contemporáneo goza de relativa impunidad por estos días.
