in 2007. It is a highly handcrafted process:
the imperial eagle of the dollar quarter 1 is
removed from the metal circle by fretwork
and placed in several installations. The dollar
and the American eagle, symbols with heavy
semantic associations, are “dismantled” (they
are literally out of circulation as exchange
value) and submitted to procedures similar
to those of interesting cultural processes: as
in the symbolic charge of post-mortems or
taxonomy, but also problems related with
migration, displacement, flight; with interference
and invasion; with equalizing (homogenizing)
various social, political, cultural
universes.
In Havana, Esquivel once more activates,
with the same formal resource as a basis, a
series of historic, economic and political
relationships of interest which appropriately
connect with Yoan Capote’s concerns some
time ago in Dinero bilingue (Bilingual Currency) 2 .
Five CUC 3 cents are now inserted in the Cuban
peso and, in another of the pieces, the eagle in
the US quarter is too. There is a dialogue, now
in a picture, between a real and a forged three
1 The American dollar continues to be common
currency in El Salvador
2 In his 2002 piece, the Cuban artist also assembled
two coins: a 20 cent Cuban coin and a 25 cent
American coin. The nonsense of comparing their
exchange value contrasted with the way Marti’s and
Lincoln’s figures overlapped.
NOVEMBER/NOVIEMBRE 2009
cambio) y sometidos a procedimientos asociables a
interesantes procesos culturales: considérese aquí
la carga simbólica de la autopsia o la taxonomía;
Lincoln.
peso bill, in which Korda’s image of Che,
coarsely reproduced in the forged one, seems
to summarise its absurd use and abuse.
Esquivel also collects coins commemorating
revolutionary events which he turns into
small freestanding sculptures, because their
main motive (whether the Tocopan in the
Pan American games or the Granma yacht)
is almost entirely cut out and bent to set it in
a perpendicular position with the rest of the
coin, as in a standing picture-frame. With this
simple operation, the artist activates a series of
meanings associated with the historical process
and its priorities. Which were the outstanding
events, which the collective projects and
utopias which brought about the issuing of
these numismatic series?
Nuria Güell and Adrian Melis – whom the
artist invited to collaborate in this residency
– share Esquivel’s concerns on the nature of
productive forces and the relationship between
official and alternative economy in Cuba.
From different points of view, these creators
have also become interested in the ethic and
moral problems of some social phenomena
in the Cuban context and at times take rather
radical positions on them.
The piece they worked on in the residency
(Trabajo socialmente util – Socially Useful Work)
involved a group of people to which they made
a proposal having to do with their individual
economy. They got hold of permits for private
or freelance work, unavailable today because of
contexto cubano y asumen a veces posiciones bastante
