“Este moái tallado en madera está relacionado con los kava kava, figuras de los ancestros
de la isla. Tiene esta forma para representar a alguien que está pensando. Me demoro dos
meses en tallarla, uso herramientas como el kauteke (hacha de mano) y el formón. Tiene
también otros materiales además de la madera, como el ojo, que está hecho de vértebra
de tiburón, que para mí es muy fácil de conseguir en la isla porque soy también pescador.
La parte negra del ojo es de piedra obsidiana. Aprendí este arte por mi familia, que de
generaciones trabaja en esto. El Sello de Excelencia me ha ayudado para ser reconocido.
Ahora estoy construyendo una galería en Isla de Pascua para exhibir mi arte”.
This carved moai is based on the Kava Kava the island’s ancestral figures. It represents a man lost in
thought. I work on these figures for two months and I use tools like the Kauteke (hand ax) and chisel. It
has other materials apart from wood: the eyes are made of shark vertebra which I can get easily on the
island because I am also a fisherman. The black part of the eye is obsidian. I learnt this craft from my
family who have been doing this for generations. The Seal of Excellence has helped me become known. I
am currently building a gallery on the island to show my work.
